Rhesus Negative

Hi everyone - wow, the more I read atm, the more anxious I get and potential problems I find. I'm rhesus negative and had antiD injection in my first pregnancy 13-14 years ago. Now so read that having had these injections will cause the immediate production of antibodies if the foetal blood comes into contact with mine and that injections can't prevent rhesus disease in the baby if their blood type is positive. Really scared now...

No, you misunderstand. The injections prevent that happening.

Hi, I can't help with medical info but im rh- too and my husband and first baby are positive. Did you have an injection after the birth of your first child?

Congratulations on your pregnancy and sorry you are feeling anxious. Where did you read this? Is it is a reputable site because I have not heard it before? The purpose of anti D injection is to stop the production of antibodies being formed not cause them.

As a side note you may not need anti d this time. I had a blood test to discover babies blood type so didnt need the injection. This was offered on the NHS where I am.

You're right, I had misunderstood! It is if you were sensitised to rhesus positive blood during your last pregnancy because the baby was rhesus positive that there can be a problem in a second pregnancy. I'm fairly sure my DS is rhesus negative like me. Thanks for the replies!

They will test for the antibodies in your blood (I know someone who had them). Theoretically, the injection prevented it last time, but they will test to make sure at the start of your second pregnancy.
