Help!! I decided that we'd like one of these, would be good for the baby to sit in and look out of when I'm cooking etc and could be used for weaning later on.

Found a cheap, no frills one at Argos for £9 and thought it would be fine without toys as you could add them to the straps. It can be used from birth until 6 months or 8.5kgs.

The one I really like is the Fisher Price Rainforest Bouncer which is @£50. It looks so much fun and I just like it . Anyone got this one? it lights up and plays songs and vibrates but again, only carries a baby up to 9kgs.

Then you have the newborn to toddler ones like the Fisher Price Portable Rocker - again £40 - £50 depending on the style. Looks fun and can be used up to 18kg, plays a tune and vibrates and has toys.

Obviously, the longer I can use it the better.

And then there are all the swing type ones and now I am totally overwhelmed!

Any ideas anyone?! thanks!

This thread is old so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’re looking for bouncers, we’ve recently updated our best baby bouncer page with lots of great options tried and tested by MNHQ and real parents. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I'd go for a very plain one. This would ensure you are the one providing the running commentary to what you're doing/other form of entertainment - it will always be different and far more interesting for your baby.

LIZS · 13/10/2007 12:59

Didn't have one for ds but had a Chicco one for dd and it was great . Still no frills but comfy , padded and lay almost flat so she napped in it a lot (she had reflux so would n't lay flat in her bed). Could put a baby gym over it or attach toys to the waist strap. Go for basic comfort not gimmicks.

My MIL bought me a bouncer that has the music and vibrating motion inbuilt. TBH I am not to keen on the music as it sounds so fake (if that makes sense) I also have been told over and over that if you your baby is constatnly stimulated by all these things it will begin to expect it. and can cause real problems getting your baby to settle along.

I do like the rainforest one though it has also had some good reviews

LIZS · 13/10/2007 13:01

Ours was more basic version of this

NorthernLurker · 13/10/2007 13:05

I have basic one from Boots - around £20 and been very good - to be honest - it lasts for such a short time - go basic and spend the cash on something else.

spugs · 13/10/2007 14:31

i have 2 from mothercare one was £25 its a yellow jungle one and is shite, far to upright and unusable in my opinion. the other one is the cheapest they do and is brilliant. my friend has one of the black baby bjorn ones (about £60) and thats also very good

MrsMcSpooky · 13/10/2007 16:12

Thanks ladies ? from what you?ve said it does sound like the really basic one is probably too basic as it has no padding for comfort on anything, it?s this one www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3753794/Trail/searchtext%3EBOUNCERS.htm

This is the rainforest one I liked www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/0982850/Trail/searchtext%3EBOUNCERS.htm

But maybe one of these would last longer and be more practical?

Won?t be from Argos necessarily!

i invested in the baby bjorn sitter and my LO loves it! he is only 5 weeks old and went into it last week - he can keep himself entertained for ages. It may appear a bit steep but unlike the rockers that your bub will grow out of, this changes into a chair that they can sit on up to the age of 2.

Another note on the rocker chairs, my nephew had one and as soon as he could stop it from rocking he did - by grabbing hold of one of the bars, hilarious to watch, but meant it wasnt much good after that!

goingfor3 · 13/10/2007 16:55

I would go for the one LIZ recommended, I was just about to look for it but deicded to click on her link first. We had a similar one for the girls and it was fab. Really comfy even for having little naps in during the day and great for weaning too. We only have to replace it as I washed myine to many times and dd2 used it for over 12 months so her bum was touching the floor by the end. Vibrating and musicals ones seem pointless to me, if you baby needs stimulation use a baby gym and have the seat for quiet time.

LIZS · 13/10/2007 17:10

I'm sceptical about the ones which promise to go through to toddler age. In practice it just does n't happen !

MrsBadger · 13/10/2007 17:19

basic ones are the best ime
esp if you find they hate it and twas all a waste of money, though dd loves hers
more upright ones are better as she can see around better
doesn't need to be padded as the fabric sling moulds to their body, like a deckchair does

3madboys · 13/10/2007 17:36

i have been looking at bouncy chairs as baby no 4 is due next year, i had one that i used for ds1 and ds2, then lent it to a friend who never gave it back, grrrrrrr so for ds3 i didnt have one, we just used his first stage car seat for him to sit in in the house. but i really dont think that was as good so will be buying a bouncy chair for this baby.

jojomamambebe have a lovely stripey one for £20, very simple but nice, with a detachable toy bar.

and john lewis have a nice spotty/polka dot pattern one for £15 but it doesnt have a toy bar. depending on how big your baby is its not worth paying loads for one as they can outgrow them fairly quickly, but they are very useful to have and as they are so light they are easy to move around the house etc

PTA · 13/10/2007 17:45

I know this probably flies in the face of what has already been said but we got the Fisher Price "Kick and Learn" one for about £40.
It has a bar over it with toys and also sound and lights. You can set it to play or you can leave it so that when the child kicks with their heels on the seat, a tune will play and the lights will flash. The advantage being that they might learn cause and effect. Ds2 has Down's and we thought it might help, he has just turned 1 and loves it.

It also has the vibrating switch.

CristinaTheAstonishing does have a point about you entertaing the baby but the musical arch lifts off so that they can watch what you do and you can feed them in it more easily.

Hope this helps rather than hinders!

covenhope · 13/10/2007 18:02

We have this one here

It's fairly basic but has done DD a good 7 months.

MrsBadger · 13/10/2007 18:33

oh and as far as toy bars go, we have this which goes pver the chair very well as well as being good to lie under

MrsMcSpooky · 15/10/2007 13:53

Thanks ladies think I still have lots of thinking to do

Hippityhoppity · 15/10/2007 13:56

We had £12 one from mothercare and it was great. Totally basic, like a deckchair for babies. He's now 6months and can go in his highchair when he needs to be 'contained' while playing My mum got an all singing all dancing one for him and tbh I think it looks like a waste of money, he certainly looks no happier in it than in his old one

MrsMcSpooky · 16/10/2007 10:01

My sister has just put this into perspective for me, would a child of 18kg (about the size of my 4 year old nephew!) want to go in a bouncer? My nephew of under 2 weighs about 13kg and he probably wouldn?t want to go in one, especially not strapped in so I?ve decided 9kg is probably fine ?????.still have my eye on the rain forest one!!

wheelybug · 16/10/2007 10:10

Hi MrsMc - I bought an all singing all dancing one (well vibrating, bird noises etc) for dd and it was rubbish. The bounce and vibrate didn't do anything for her so I'd still ahve to bounce it with my foot.

I've given it away because I would buy a different once if DC2 ever comes along - A friend had a similar one to the one LIz linked to (except a bit more basic - from mothercare) and it worked much better. Can adjust seat position as baby gets older. Will see if I can find a similar one.

wheelybug · 16/10/2007 10:15

ok maybe not so cheap but this sort www.mothercare.com/gp/product/B000M5DDA2/sr=1-8/qid=1192525960/ref=sr_1_8/202-5659601-3798242?ie=UTF 8&m=A2LBKNDJ2KZUGQ&n=42775041&mcb=core

What I do wish I'd bought with dd (and go my parents to buy for my brother when they had DC2 so it could be passed on to me) was a swing chair. This sort of thing (not one of the huge ones) www.toysrus.co.uk/Product.aspx/BruHome/BruActiveBaby/BruActiveBabySwings/723371?ref=Search

seeker · 16/10/2007 10:21

Don't know if this has been said - but try to borrow one first. My ds hated anything like this with a passion. He liked lying flat on his back in his basket - he hated being rocked, jiggled, vibrated.......shame it took me 6 weeks to realize!
