Hey

When should a first time mum start to feel and
notice a proper pattern with baby kicks?

I feel my baby move daily but I feel some times her kicks are light they're deffo fast and tickle at times. sometimes she kicks harder. Im 23 weeks pregnant. From all the scans I've went to from 5/6weeks onwards have been told my baby is very healthy.

This is my first baby

I am very anxious though.

@Mumtobexo I think midwives say there is usually not a pattern until after 24 weeks so I wouldn't worry 😊

ToxicTracey · 15/10/2020 13:35

I'm pregnant with my second so thought I'd have been able to feel them earlier but I never noticed any sort of pattern until about 28 weeks.

lockdownpregnancy · 15/10/2020 13:54

I was feeling my DS kick from around 18 weeks but no pattern until 24 weeks (ish) if I remember rightly.
With it being our first you may not get a pattern from your baby for a while.
If you're concerned speak with your MW

wigglerose · 15/10/2020 14:28

Speak to your MW first and foremost. If anything she can set your mind at ease.
I'm 28 weeks. At 23 weeks if I had a busy day or my mind was occupied I didn't notice the kicks much.

I'm 28 weeks now and to be honest its still the case although slightly less so.

There's a free app you can download to record kicks and get an idea of the pattern called Kicks Count. I recommend it (although it doesn't let you retrospectively add kicks, so if you feel them at 5:30am when you're half awake but don't get your phone out you can't add them later).

Shawla92 · 15/10/2020 14:47

Depending on where your placenta is you can start to feel kicks from as early as 18 weeks, but they are usually light and not in a pattern. I have been told by my midwife that more of a pattern will occur from 28 weeks however if you do feel a regular pattern before 28 weeks and you have a day where it is different and you are worried you should contact the number in your white book :)

LavaCake · 15/10/2020 16:06

It’s not until 28 weeks that you should feel a pattern, but after 24 weeks you should feel them move every day. Before then it’s ok if the movement you feel is inconsistent.

My placenta is actually low lying so whenever I feel little movement I tend to feel it down there in that area or so it comes across but I'm hoping it will move soon and also thank you for your message 💕

I feel movement everyday I thought that they should've been harder or more of a pattern but because it's my first I shouldn't so much expect that. Some days some kicks are harder than others. But I'm only 23 weeks yet! But thank you for your message 💕

Put my mind at ease! I will definitely download this app. Thank you for your message. I'm naturally an anxious person and take notice to everything so perhaps I'm being paranoid and overthinking but will contact my midwife. Thank you for your message 💕

Okay I'm worrying much less now because I thought that with your second you'd feel them sooner than you did with your first and with your first you wouldn't feel much but when you start to notice and then go a day without noticing much makes you paranoid! But thank you for your message 💕

I had this a couple of weeks ago at 22/23 weeks. I'd mainly felt her move on an evening but didn't feel anything for a couple of days. When I phoned up, one of the midwifes made me feel like I was over reacting. Later on though, I was still fretting and phoned again. The midwife was different and she was so lovely! I went in to get checked over and heard the heartbeat etc.

She did say that babies don't usually have a regular pattern until 28 weeks :)

BeMorePacific · 15/10/2020 18:30

I’m 37 weeks and still don’t know any pattern.
I was the same with my 1st pregnancy.
If I haven’t noticed movement, due to being busy etc, I will have a cold drink, Give my bump a good poke and prod until I feel reassured.
If you’re ever worried about lack of movement once you’re past 24 weeks, call triage x

Letmegetthisrightasawoman · 15/10/2020 19:06

FWIW, my first never had a pattern. At just turned 2 he still doesn't have a strict routine. I'm 23 weeks too, and this one is super regular, but it's still all very faint. Feels more like bubbles in my lower abdomen than kicks. As a PP said, easy to miss when I'm having a busy day!

I'm sorry about your experience. It's disgusting how midwives these days don't seem to care as they used too before. They seem to want to hurry the process and hush you up. My baby also loves more in the evening. She used too at early hours of the morning but little one is loving as I type this

I'll definitely be doing that. If I do that now I know for a fact I'd get blown off and told it's normal or something along them lines. Sad really because pregnancy can be such a scary thing but not taken seriously enough especially with new mums were often made too feel were overreacting

Yes ofc! Hopefully as the pregnancy progress they'll get stronger. The faintness is what makes mothers anxious as well I think
