Pelvic floor 'Educator'

I'm 27 weeks and want to work on my pelvic floor. The problem is, I'm never quite sure if I'm doing it right. My muscles down there seem to be randomly relaxed or tensed at different times and I'm not sure what's 'on' or 'off'. I tried stopping a wee mid flow, as I saw somewhere that that's a good way of locating your pelvic floor, but it felt more like I was relaxing the muscles to stop the wee than activating them, which seems counter intuitive.

I went to see my physio (who specialises in pre and post natal stuff) about something unrelated and mentioned this to her. She suggested a device called the Educator. You insert it like a tampon and is has a little stick attached which moves to show whether you are using the right muscles.

I ordered one but looking at the instructions it says in big capital letters 'Not to be used in pregnancy'. I can't see what would be dangerous about it - it's just a lump of plastic. I'll check with my physio and midwife, but has anyone come across this before?

The description in that "This is going to hurt" book is the best one I've read of how to do them: “There are leaflets that describe these exercises in confusing detail, but I always just used to tell patients, ‘Imagine you’re sitting in a bath full of eels and you don’t want any of them getting in.’"
