Snowsuits

Hi! My baby is due in December and I was just wondering if it's worth getting a padded snowsuit? I have baby grows, cardigans and a padded soft pram suit with hat etc already and was wondering if that would be enough for daily walks in the pram? Obvs I can layer up with blankets too and the zipped bit that goes over the carrycot is thick. Just wondering how useful a really big padded snowsuit would be or whether baby might get a bit too hot lying with one on? I live in the North of the UK so it can get freezing but I'm trying to avoid buying stuff I might not need! Thanks

I'd say a pram suit and snow suit are the same thing in my mind. Is the pram suit and all in one thing? If so I think that would be fine as you say you layer with blankets anyway plus the pram cover

I lobed our Tuppence and Crumble star wrap. Layers are your friend. Trying to squash a newborn into a pram suit is a pain in the arse. Trying to get them out again, if they’ve fallen asleep outside and you come home, is even worse! Where as the star wrap can simply be opened up when you come indoors to stop baby overheating. They’re great in a sling too, I even managed to extract the wrap from a sling without waking the sleeping baby! You can always Chuck an extra blanket or two over the top in the pram if it’s really cold, again easily removed if you come indoors. I found appropriate clothing when switching between inside and outside a constant challenge with a newborn, easy to remove is always a bonus.

I wouldn't buy a snowsuit just now. If you already have a cozy all-in-one suit that will probably be fine layered with blankets in the pram. Once your baby arrives you might get one as a gift or decide to buy one when you feel you need it.

It's a long time since I had DC but I'm sure there's now advice about not using snowsuits in car seats. As a PP said - wrestling babies in and out of complicated clothing isn't fun!

kidsareok · 14/10/2020 17:55

@SpacePug yeah - it's like a sweatshirt cotton material with a fleece lining, was just wondering if I needed something thicker but I think it'll be fine with layers and blankets! FTM life - haven't got a clue what I'll need haha xx

@FizzingWhizzbee123 @RomaineCalm thank you!! Yeah, I just think they look so thick for a tiny newborn! I was imagining getting one when the baby is older and can sit forward facing etc. I'll defo stick to layers and blankets when baby is so small, thank you!

We bought one for a Jan baby and honestly never used it. It was such a pain to put on and if we went in a cafe and he was asleep he would overheat.

I think it's far easier to control their temperature with layers and blankets.

kidsareok · 14/10/2020 19:55

@doadeer thank you! That's a good point - layers it is!

One thing I can recommend if you plan to use a sling for a winter baby is something like this https://smile.amazon.co.uk/TININNA-Multifunctional-Protective-Carrier-Windproof/dp/B01NBA4LZC/ref=mpssa116?dchild=1&keywords=sling+baby+cover+winter&qid=1602701885&sr=8-6

(not necessarily that one)

It's like a sleeping bag that goes over the sling and ties around your back (under your coat)

I found it very handy!

welshweasel · 14/10/2020 20:08

Get a star wrap!!
I had two January babies and never used a snowsuit. Impossible to wrestle babies into, you can’t leave them on when you go inside, can’t use them in the car or sling.
Star wraps are ace - easy to use and can unwrap them when you get home from your walk and baby has fallen asleep!

I have a 3 month old and she goes in hers for walks, shes lovely and snug and as for when we get home I just take her out and put her down in her moses basket, a couple of bum Pat's and shes back asleep :) x

Have a look at Morrck blankets. I wouldn't use anything else now.

Another vote for a tuppence and crumble star wrap. They are brilliant.

MaverickDanger · 14/10/2020 22:42

I’m also due in December and have bought a star wrap for the car etc & have been given some snowsuits. Glad of them but wouldn’t have bought them myself.

nevernotstruggling · 14/10/2020 22:51

Ohh I love the star wraps. I had to google them. They would have been great with my ergo. I read the post and got curious!!

I'm in Devon so maybe I can't judge but I had a few pram suits and they seemed too much - October and November babies.

I did have a snow suit for dd1 when she was about one though that we used quite a bit when we did long park trips.

I think thinner layers are fine if it's shopping or whatever. Snow suits are exactly that.

DappledThings · 14/10/2020 23:32

Pramsuit and blankets are much more use than a snowsuit. I was given a snowsuit for DC2 in 3-6 month size and it went, unused, to the charity shop.

Teakind · 15/10/2020 08:09

I used a snow/pram suit with both of my DC regularly. They can't wear too many layers in a car seat so I found it easy to lay the snow suit in the pram and zip them straight in to their suit when I got them out.

I also found they kept their legs warm if they were in a sling but you have to be careful with making sure they don't overheat this way as obviously they've then got your body heat warming them too.

EmilySpinach · 15/10/2020 08:29

I would go to some lengths to avoid putting a snowsuited baby in a sling unless you live in a seriously cold climate. As the pp has said there is too great a risk of overheating; remember that a baby who is cold will cry and let you know but an overheated baby will be drowsy. Star wraps cover legs for sling-wearing, or you can get little moccasin socks and leg warmers.
