Consultant led

What does consultant led actually mean?

I'm 28 weeks and had direct contact with consultant today.

It was by phone and lasted literally 90 seconds.

They asked me to confirm my identity.

They asked if pregnancy was going well. No one has told me otherwise so I said it was as far as I know.

They asked if I had any specific questions. I didn't, I thought perhaps some might come out of a conversation. But that was it. They said ok and hung up.

Is that genuinely it? They didn't have my notes. Haven't seen me in person. I think
I'm meant to have growth scans but no one has mentioned it. Yes I should have asked, but I thought they were asking if there was anything I wanted concerting in the appointment

I know they are busy but I'm left feeling shocked and very uncared for

Hmm yeah does seem strange, I'm consultant led and had my first meeting at 13 weeks and will see them every 2 weeks.
I guess it depends why your consultant led, but it usually means you're assessed by a Obstetric Team More than midwifes (I think)

I'm consultant led and have my first appointment early November. Very worried I'll be fobbed off, as I've seen a few posts on here where the consultant doesn't seem very interested! Fingers crossed they are happy to stay on the phone for more than 2 minutes!

I suppose it is down to the reason why you are consultant led. In my first pregnancy I was technically consultant led due to being slightly overweight but spoke to them once, had extra scans at 32 and 36 weeks but that was all.

In this pregnancy I am consultant led due to having a severe blood clot 4 weeks after EMCS the first time. Speak to a consultant on the phone every month, they have me come to the hospital for extra tests and will have growth scans at 32/36 weeks

Depends why you are consultant led. I was initially due to my age but had a healthy normal pregnancy so they didn’t want to see me unless I went overdue.
But then I got GD, so did then have actual appointments for that, but it was easily diet controlled and I didn’t need medication so just had growth scans.

If I had a major health concern it would’ve been more important.

Charlotte2020 · 15/10/2020 11:16

@Thegirlhasnoname @Megan2018 I'm epileptic (controlled with meds) and had spinal surgery a while back so worried about labour due to inability to have certain pain meds and possibility scar tissue could have an impact on an epidural. I guess I'll have to wait and see!

I'm consultant led and first saw my consultant after my 20 week scan. I now see him after every growth scan once a month until delivery. As well as my normal midwife checks.
I'd call your midwife team and ask, it doesn't sound right.

I was consultant led with both my babies due to a heart condition... all the consultant apps were pretty pointless if I’m being honest. During my labour the ward was fall so I was MW led and didn’t see a consultant once-
This was pre covid

It depends on the reason for being consultant led. I was consultant led as the birth would be high risk not the pregnancy. All my appointments were about the birth.

DiabeticFirstBaby · 15/10/2020 12:33

I'm consultant led due to my diabetes so have a obstetrician and a diabetic Consultant looking after me, i've had nearly weekly phone calls from 5 weeks, the first obs one was good as gave me info about being induced etc but second one was a complete waste of time where they asked me all the same questions about my medical history and then gave me some inaccurate info about my blood results. The diabetic ones have been reviewing my glucose levels etc so been more useful.

iloveyoubutilovememore · 15/10/2020 12:38

Do you know why you are consultant led? There are so many reasons. If I were you I would ask for another conversation as that's nowhere near enough time you need to speak through any concerns you may have.

I'm consultant led this time round as I had a traumatic birth resulting in postnatal depression. I also want an elective section this time so that ties into it as well. Because of the mental health side to things I will be under a perinatal mental health consultant throughout, with weekly visitors from the HV until 12 weeks. I'm chuffed!

Superscientist · 15/10/2020 13:20

I was consultant led due to mh and a very high risk of antenatal and postnatal mental illness.
I had the first appointment after my dating scan where they went through the risks and how important it was to stay on my medication. They were going to refer me to the perinatal mental health team but my gp had already done that.
I had a follow up at 24 weeks by which point the perinatal team had agreed to take me on. It was decided I didn't need to be seeing both and it made more sense for the perinatal team to lead my care so I didn't see the obs consultant again. I did a birth plan with my psychiatrist which sent and followed completely by the hospital, community midwives and health visitors. So I didn't lose out by not seeing the consultant later in pregnancy.

Thanks all

I'm not sure why I'm consultant led

I think a mixture of factors:
High bmi
Previous losses
Previous failed induction leading to c section
High blood loss during section

I dint know

I've written to the hospital and asked what I should expect.
