Hi all. I’ve recently had ivf and found out o was pregnant, I was then admitted to hospital with ohss and found out during a routine test I have covid. I was discharged last Monday, after a scan at 4+6 weeks which showed nothing regarding the pregnancy, I have later gone on to have some discomfort when weeing and a pain in my right side, I woke up through the night last night had a wee and after it I was doubled over with sharp cramps and pain which went from me groin down my leg, up to lower belly and around my hip to my right lower back, i took paracetomal and it eased after about 20 mins. I’m so scared it’s an ectopic. Can anyone shed some light please? I’ve rung my clinic who are getting back to me but I don’t think I’ll be seen.

In my experience ectopic pain doesn’t ease off. However I was considerably further along than you. Fc all is well xx

Fightingtobepositive · 12/10/2020 12:28

Thank you. How were you diagnosed? X

Tbh if you suspect ectopic I'd go to and and e

steppemum · 12/10/2020 12:31

I don't think that IVF can be ectopic.

Ectopic is when the egg is fertilised before it has reached the womb. In IVF the egg is transferred into the womb, and it can't then travel up to your fallopian tube.
I may be wrong though.
I would

  1. phone your IVF team and ask them
  2. ask about symptoms you are having

I am so sorry you are experiencing this, I remember your thread about the scan Flowers

physicskate · 12/10/2020 12:43

Ivf can certainly cause ectopics. It might even be slightly more common...

Op- have they been testing your hcg? I'd definitely be in contact with your clinic now (not later). Always best to rule out ectopic: this is generally done with scans but blood tests can give an indication.

Snoopypants · 12/10/2020 12:50

Hi OP I don’t want to cause undue worry but the pain you describe is similar to the sharp cramps I had experienced during my ectopic pregnancy at around 6 weeks. I don’t remember discomfort when weeing though... The pain subsided or came and went so I decided to leave it for another day. I then started to bleed the next day and was advised to come to the Early Pregnancy Unit for a scan. They take bleeding and pain very seriously when you are around 6 weeks so I would urge you to speak to your local maternity services who can direct you to the right place. Hopefully it’s nothing to worry about but it’s better to get it checked out.

Thank you for your comments ladies. I have rung my clinic at 10am. They don’t seem in any sort of rush to call back. And the last time I spoke about things concerning me they said that they wouldn’t scan yet anyway and ectopics aren’t diagnosed until 9 weeks. They are a great clinic but I’ve been a little frustrated with Then since being home from hospital because I know they are reluctant to see me until I’m far past covid (understandably) but I feel fobbed off at the moment. I’m just very scared of leaving it to long.

My hcg was being done over the week I was in hospital and the doctor said they were absolutely fine.

If your clinic is being unhelpful, can you phone the Early Pregnancy Unit directly and give them your symptoms? They may then call you in.

Are you still infectious? You have been home for a week, do you know when you will be clear?

EarlGreyT · 12/10/2020 13:14

I don’t mean to derail the thread and I hope the clinic get back to you soon OP.

@steppemum

I don't think that IVF can be ectopic.

This is wrong and dangerous advice. Unfortunately the risk of ectopic is slightly higher with IVF too.

Ectopic is when the egg is fertilised before it has reached the womb. In IVF the egg is transferred into the womb, and it can't then travel up to your fallopian tube.
The first sentence of that statement is correct. The second sentence is wrong. In IVF the EMBRYO is transferred into the womb, but it isn’t implanted in the transfer it has to implant itself (which it either does or not a few days after transfer) and it absolutely can travel up to the Fallopian tube.

Snoopypants · 12/10/2020 13:19

Phone someone else- even 111 might be more helpful. 9 weeks is simply not true. I was scanned at 6 weeks, they found the embryo in my right Fallopian tube and rushed me into surgery that day. Maybe they are not too concerned because you’re not bleeding? Regardless, being doubled over in pain is not normal for early pregnancy and should be checked out. I’m sorry you’re going through this and wish you can find the right care. I would try and avoid A&E if at all possible and go directly to an Early Pregnancy Unit.

Queenbee95 · 12/10/2020 13:19

Covid or not, an ectopic pregnancy is dangerous and you should really be seen if you suspect this. Please phone your local EPU and let them know exactly what is going on, but also tell them you are Covid positive too.

Apandemicyousay · 12/10/2020 13:30

I’ve had both IVF and an ectopic. Ectopics occur more commonly following IVF than normal pregnancy, as embryo can wander before it implants. The 9week advice seems odd and late.
It is maybe too early to see on scan (mine was Initially) but they could see my bHCGs were doubling without corresponding implantation changes on scan. I had pain and rusty coloured bleeding too (Not like period blood). I was monitored with alternate day imaging and bHCG/progesterone levels for a few days until picture was clearer (Ie. Could see what bloods were doing in conjunction with scans). After a few days it became apparent and was then medically managed.
I went via A&E as I just knew there was something wrong- really bad pain (like appendicitis) and bleeding. Was assessed as ‘not ruptured’ and likely miscarriage so sent home, with EPU scan next day that revealed ectopic problem. TBH the consuktant was surprised I was sent home as history was classic. Don’t be scared to go to A&E esp if pain returns

lenny12345 · 12/10/2020 13:31

Hey,

I had this pain earlier on in my pregnant and I had a uti infection.

I also have had a ectopic and pain does sound similar however I didn't get the pin until it had ruptured and I imagine it would be far to early for that. With ectopic I feel like you wouldn't be asking this question. You almost KNOW becuSe the pair is so pitiful at it that makes sense. I started having the pain at 6 weeks and it was constant till 7 weeks when I had emergency surgery xx

JemimaTiggywinkle · 12/10/2020 13:32

I don’t have any experience with ectopic pregnancy. But in the early stages of my pregnancy I got a lot of shooting pains/cramps all around my abdomen/pelvic area. Mine happened when I got up from lying or sitting down, or rolled over/twisted. It felt like a really bad stitch/cramp but over quite a wide area.

Apparently this happens because all your ligaments loosen up in pregnancy.

Still worth checking yours out, but hopefully it’s something like this and not anything more serious.

Apandemicyousay · 12/10/2020 13:32

(Also agree try to get to an EPU directly first)

fawnyspawn · 12/10/2020 13:52

My ectopics were diagnosed at 5 and 6 weeks and ivf increases the chances!! I didn't even have pain with the second. The first one the pain was very sharp and localised to my groin like a hot poker. If in doubt to to a and e to be checked over.

Fightingtobepositive · 12/10/2020 14:33

Thank you so much for all your reply’s. No call back from clinic yet. So I’ve rung my gp and have an apt at 4.20. So I’m just 🙏🤞 for some positive news. I think we really need some 🙏🤞🙏🤞🙏🤞 x
