Hospital bag size

I've heard that hospitals can be a bit funny about how much stuff you take in with you...just wondering what size bag you're all packing and if you're packing one for you and one for baby?

Think it's a bit different at the moment, with restrictions on partners being allowed in/to come and go.

I have a large cabin bag with my stuff for labour/immediately after, and a changing bag with bits for baby. DH will also have a bag with snacks/clean clothes/stuff to entertain him.

I've put my going home outfit in the car seat, along with a fleecy suit for baby and blankets.

I've also packed a large rucksack in case I'm kept in, but the intention at the moment is to leave it in the car. This may have to change if we go into harder lockdown.

I haven't heard of that before, I got two bags packed! I got a backpack for the baby, it has the starter pack formula milk, 6 vests and sleepsuits, a top for my waterbirth, 10 nappies (ftm so no idea how much newborns go through!) and some snacks. I got another bag for my stuff only so that's 2 PJ's, an outfit for coming home, toiletries, dressing gown and slippers plus a phone charger and kindle to read at night if I don't sleep.
I would check with your midwife if you're not sure about your hospital or just get one of those cabin suitcases that would fit both your stuff and babies so it's all together in 1.
You think you're going away for a holiday when you pack but too much is better than sending someone home to get more things!

You really don't need much for a standard delivery these days but if you have an extended stay you need more do my suggestion is a labour bag (which your dp takes with them after delivery/puts in car if staying, small overnight bag for you, same for baby then in the car have an additional bag which 2 more days clothing for you and baby just in case that dp can bring in if you have a c-section. What they moan about women having enough clothing for them and baby for a 6 week cruise to Australia!

I think I only had a shoebox sized (Unlockable) locker next to my bed, so after baby was delivered DH took most of the stuff away.

@Stargazer87 My hospital are still not allowing any visitors or anyone to even bring you more stuff if you need to stay in 🙄 so I’ve gone all in 😂 I’ve got a cabin suitcase for me and a rucksack style changing bag for baby. DH will also have a bag with snacks for us and change of clothes for him etc.
Shower towels are taking up half my case though! Some list for my hospital says to pack your own and some don’t mention it so I have no idea if I need them or not 🤷🏻‍♀️

I packed a cabin case with bits for me and dh during labour (snacks, change nightwear for me, toothbrush for us both in case a long labour, clean pants for him!, books, phone charger etc) and bits I would need immediately after birth (couple nappies, clothes for baby, wipes, bottle, formula) then as soon as baby had been born and h had had a hold and we were settled the bag got taken away back to the car and replaced with a 2nd cabin case with more nappies, bottles, formula, phone charger, toiletries, book, going home outfit for us both. I already knew I was going to be kept in 48 hours regardless of birth so was easier to pack 2 separate bags which could just be swapped over than have to try to remember what needed leaving in the room and what needed returning to the car...this was 12 years ago though!

Rucksack for baby and a small tote bag for me. If it wasn’t for the fact I’ve packed 10 cloth nappies just in case we do end up in hospital for 24 hours or more, I’d easily fit both lots into the rucksack. Partners are still allowed to visit once per day at my hospital, and I’m hoping for a 6 hour discharge so I’ve not packed loads.
I’ve got:
Two nighties
A jumper
Leggings
A vest top
A few pairs of knickers
A couple of nursing bras
A wash bag with toothbrush, deodorant, mini shampoo, a hairbrush, and some hair elastics
Maternity pads
Phone charger
Headphones
Yet to pack some snacks and a couple of sports drinks
Will also shove a clean pair of pants and a T-shirt for DH in
Baby has:
10 cloth nappies (one all in one, four fitted nappies, five muslins, two wraps)
A couple of wet bags for dirty stuff
A small wet bag with cloth wipes
Four sleepsuits
Six vests
A couple of hats
A cardigan
A couple of cord ties
A small blanket for the car seat
(Have packed one hat, one sleep suit, one vest and a nappy into one pocket so it can be found easily if we need to go to theatre or something)

I was planning on taking a cabin case for me and a weekend bag for the baby...a few people now have told me that's too much so I'm worrying! 🙈

DressingGown87 · 11/10/2020 17:39

I have a cabin suitcase (for me) and a large weekend bag (for baby / snacks). I am being induced so potentially in a few days, prior to the baby arriving. I don’t have a partner so my friend is my only visitor, but with restrictions on visiting and her working full time and having her own DC, some days she might not be able to come some days. But I’m like you and have packed and unpacked so many times, trying to reduce it down, as I’m worrying it’s too much!

WindsorBlues · 11/10/2020 17:44

I purchased my hospital bag the other day. Just a standard holdall but with 72% off so I got it for £14. I'm going to pinch the PP idea of keeping a few extra bits and pieces in the car but I'll probably just keep those in a bag for life.

WindsorBlues · 11/10/2020 17:45

I'll also bring the pram bag filled with the babies supplies

BS9790 · 11/10/2020 17:53

I've packed a hand luggage case for myself and a weekend bag for baby. I also have a drawstring bag with snacks & drinks which will fit in the babies bag and then lift out.

My bag:
3 nighties
2 bras
Vest top
Lots of big knickers
2 packs of maternity pads
Coming home clothes
Slippers & dressing gown
Phone charger & tablet
Water bottle with straw
Fluffy socks (Read your feet get cold in labour!)
Towel
Wash bag with toiletries

Babies bag:
Nappies
Water wipes
Coming home outfit & hat
5 babygrows/vests/hats
Cardigan
Blanket
3 muslins

Probably over packed, but my DH has a 1 hour slot each day booked with midwifes on ward, one day it could be 9am and the next day could be 7pm...so could be best part of 2 days before I can be brought anything I need 🤷‍♀️

Mommabear20 · 11/10/2020 17:58

I gave birth during lockdown and took 1 cabin bag suitcase for me and DH and our nappy bag with a few outfits for baby. Honestly everything seems necessary when you're packing but I didn't touch half of it! 😂

PolarBearStrength · 11/10/2020 18:38

@Stargazer87 Just be aware that the bed spaces in postnatal wards are really small and the staff caring for you really don’t want to be tripping over your bags in the middle of the night so make sure they can fit in a relatively small corner or in/on the bedside locker.
