Non Bio for Baby x

So we have a new washing machine and I thought great this is the perfect time to switch to non bio as I'm 30 weeks and babies clothes need washing pretty soon.
My boyfriend bless him he decided today whilst
I'm out he'll help and wash some of our clothes - he's hunted down a bottle of bio liquid at the back of the cupboard and used it.
Not a big problem I'm sure but does the bio residue stay in the machine for a few spins? I'm tempted to leave it a few days and wash some more of our clothes in non bio so it clears the machine a bit of any bio? Was going to wash some baby bedding today but not sure I want to to now!!
I know I sound mad!! Xx

There has been no proven link between biological washing agents and skin reactions. We use Ariel Bio for our nappy washes (have a toddler) and loads of baby clothes get thrown in with those, so second baby’s stuff will all be washed in bio from birth. Unless you plan never to use any stain removers or disinfectants near baby things, worrying about a trace of bio liquid in your washing machine is way OTT. FWIW powder disperses much better in the wash than liquid.

I recently read there’s no correlation between bio washing detergent and skin problems so I really wouldn’t worry about it at all! I also never washed all the baby bits, I know a lot of people do but eve never have a single rash or anything😊

In the nicest possible way you are overthinking this. You can’t even buy non-bio detergent (or at least not easily) in many countries.

My boy has allergy linked eczema and his skin reacts very badly to bio detergent so we always use non bio. On the few times he's had clothes washed in bio, one wash with non bio has been enough for him to be able to wear them again.

@AliSxo personally bid wash them all again in the machine with absolute no detergent, maybe just some white vinegar in the softening drawer, which will soften the clothes as well as the machine getting a clean at the same time. They won't smell of vinegar so don't worry! Doing a wash without detergent will be the best as there is always residue and he no doubt used too much so they will probably still have a scent when they come out 😊

I would just run a quick wash with nothing.

Unless your baby reacts with eczema then they’ll likely be fine anyway x

ChampooPapi · 11/10/2020 09:53

@AliSxo also detergent is to clean clothes, if they are already clean they don't need more added! So water rinsing is best and what I'd definitely do. Yes they get 'scented' with a different scent and all but there is absolutely no need to re wash them with more detergent, there will be some residue in the machine anyway, just a standard wash with an extra rinse cycle added will be fine

@Frdd agreed

Another one with eczema here. It may not be the enzymes my kids react to, but the optical brighteners which are found even in non- bio.

I don’t allow other products to be used in the machine, as the reactions can be so awful.
I’m not saying this because i think your baby will react. You baby will probably be fine. But from my life experience you are not overthinking it, it’s a good idea to be aware of what chemicals you are using.
Especially if you have a family history of eczema.

In some countries non-bio doesn’t even exist, in the US it is very difficult to find enzyme free detergent.

I get eczema, the only detergent that has ever irritated my skin is fairy the powdered version.
