Ok so as you do scrolling through fb I see an advert for an “gender DNA test” available from 8WEEKS 😱😱 I’ve looked and never heard of it before - obviously gender scans at 16 weeks yes but a DNA not at all - so I’m curious has anyone actually had this done and was it correct ?? The price is £79!! Sooooo curious to hear if anyone has done this - claims 91% accuracy aswell 💙💗

Have a look at their reviews on trust pilot it will soon put you off... currently pregnant with baby number 2 and I'm very impatient to know the gender so was so tempted by it but after reading the reviews it's apparently a 50/50 chance it's right so wasn't worth the risk for us personally😘 x

@mummy2myJJ absolutely wouldn’t do it just curious if anyone has - it’s just crazy to think at 8 weeks they can tell isn’t it 😂😂 i will patiently wait until 20 weeks 😂 I saw some on there fb page with a few comments underneath saying “we paid for premium and haven’t heard anything back” which in itself sounds dodgy x

They have a 50/50 chance of being right, so they have good odds. And the ones they get wrong they claim people did the test incorrectly. It’s just a scam to take people’s money.

They can tell at 8 weeks the sex of the foetus from bloods, it's just that because the service with this particular company involves sending you the kit to do the blood test yourself, there is a high risk of contamination with skin fibres (etc) from a male member of the household. If even the slightest bit of contamination occurs (which you have to very very fastidious to avoid and inevitably many people aren't) then you'll get a boy result, even if the baby is a girl.

It's also possible to get a false girl result when you're actually carrying a boy if you take the test too early for male DNA fragments to show up in maternal bloods.

So it is a legit thing - blood testing for chromosomal anomalies etc done under the NHS can tell you the foetal sex early as well - it's just that it's easy to contaminate the sample, and you won't know whether or not you did until you get the sex confirmed at scanning!

So no, it's not 50/50 or a scam, it's fairly straightforward stuff clinically (just testing maternal bloods for male DNA, essentially) but there is absolutely room for user error.

Ah wow very interesting to hear it all so Thankyou - I looked on trust pilot and there is a fair few bad ones people also saying they got told boy off them then girl elsewere so we’re worrying so sounds like more stress than needed x

I found out at 10 weeks with all of mine because I had the harmony test. Obviously the main point of the test is to check for abnormalities, but it was a wonderful bonus to find out the sex too. So yes, blood can be checked for female or male DNA.

Millylou3 · 09/10/2020 19:59

Never heard of the harmony test either how wonderful to find out so early - can understand why people do it as it’s so fab to be organised x
