out of curiousity.... when do the stretch marks come? do you only notice them after birth and bump's gone, or do they come earlier?

cheers

If you're lucky, never

I think both are possible, in answer to your question.

fingerwoman · 11/10/2007 21:56

in my first pregnancy I didn't get any til I was about 8 months pregnant. then they just came and came and came
had been cocoa buttering like mad and feeling so smug with myself too.

spookthief · 11/10/2007 21:57

I think it varies from person to person. I didn't think I had any until I saw under my bump at about 35 weeks.....

Mine were all below my belly button so I didn't really notice them until after the birth. 10 months on they've faded a lot.

lomondgal · 11/10/2007 21:59

You might be lucky I never got any with my two, I was expecting to get some as I have some old ones from when I was ill in my teens and put on a lot of weight.

tyaca · 11/10/2007 22:10

lomondgal - lol - my boobs have always been a little map of my momentarily busty teenage self. it's only now when 20wks with first that they've grown back into the old stretch marks

everyone always talks about stretch marks when pg, but never during adolesnce. if i have a daughter, i shall give her bottles and bottles of oil when she hits puberty

thinking i should give myself up to medical science and oil one half of body with, say bio oil, and t'other with nothing or rival brand. only way to ever find out. but would need a few other people to join me to make it proper science, like

big sacrifice to be half and half, but we could sell results to the winning product, or blackmail the losers....

Oh god yes, my adolescent stretch marks (bust & thighs) were far worse than this new lot.

FrayedKnot · 11/10/2007 22:17

And just remember, if the stretchmarks don;t get you, the piles and stress incontinence will...

ArgyBargy · 11/10/2007 22:17

I was massive when pg and had non at all right up to birth - then about 4 weeks after I noticed 2 small purple dots on my right hip .
I found L'Octaine almond oil, and Clarins body tonic were very good and both smell great.

PillockInThePumpkin · 11/10/2007 22:18

ds1 - none
ds2 - about 3 days after I gave birth! (but am very lucky and it's only one, leading downwards from my tummy button)

DaisyWhoooo · 11/10/2007 22:19

I didn't get ANY until my due date with ds1 They were the worst ones I had though, were never so bad with the last 3 despite the youngest being over 2lbs heavier than the first!

PillockInThePumpkin · 11/10/2007 22:20

are you stalking me love?

SpookyDooooo · 11/10/2007 22:21

With ds (1st baby) i was feeling very proud because i thought i had escaped them, then all of a sudden at 8 months i got a few, luckily low down & below belly button but they were there

With dd (2nd baby) i only got s couple more added to ds's ones but hey hoo thats life!

BrownSuga · 11/10/2007 22:24

i got mine about 8mths, just above panty line, under the bump, so i had been all happy thinking i didn't get any. bummer. still moisturising, hoping they'll fade a bit.

also i think depends on your skin. i have some from growing as a teenager, so i was bound to get them anyway, but hope the moisturising helped lessen them.

juliewoolie · 11/10/2007 22:24

Agree with argybargy almond oil is great.

I got mine when my little cherub decided to be overcooked so on wk 41 day 3 I had 3 small ones pop up on my tummy, and then got a couple on my boobs when my milk came in.

But my DS is now 4 months and with the use of bio oil they have pretty much disappeared.

Also if you have lots of spare cash strivectin is very good but v.v.v.v expensive

yama · 11/10/2007 22:25

Clarins oil is great - remember to use post-birth.

Olihan · 11/10/2007 22:29

I think as long as you don't use a mirror to look under your bump you can remain in blissful ignorance of whether or not you have any until after the birth when it all goes down .

Mine appeared from about 32 weeks with ds1, dd made a couple of them a bit longer then ds2 made them even longer (up to my tummy button ) but he was 10lbs 2.5oz so it's not surprising really!

Still, I have a matching set now - hips, thighs and boobs from puberty, then tummy from pgs.

AnnainNZ · 11/10/2007 22:48

i'm 36 wks now and was rather smugly congratulating myself on not having any stretch marks, till I (unwisely) asked dh if there were any under the belly button (where I can't see any more). He said "ummm...not really!" in that "Oh I really don't want to say the wrong thing" tone of voice men do

So of course I got the mirror out and there are a few little ones on the underside of the bump. But really, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter

sarahloumadam · 12/10/2007 08:50

Wish I had realised it was quite common to get stretch-marks as a teenager - I had loads on my hips and felt really self conscious (not helped by horrid first boyfriend). I am using Palmers cocoa-butter because it came out top in a survey on "how to look good naked" but feel it is only a matter of time before I get some - my belly feels like it is stretched to full capacity! Oh well, my bump is lovely and shiny like a big conker from all the moisturising !

WheresMyWaistGone · 15/10/2007 22:49

Well, at 40+3 I don't have any though I think, because of a few comments posted here, I might just get a mirror to look under my bump...!!!

elbarto · 15/10/2007 22:52

had massive bump with no stretch marks (and was very smug about it)- only to have them appear 1 week after giving birth. booo!

slim22 · 16/10/2007 01:39

none on my belly, lots on my hips and buttocks! I noticed AFTER birth.
The good news is if you treat consistently, they do fade.
Cocoa butter brand is great.
Bio oil also has good review.
Strivectin dfinitely if you can spare the cash
Clarins oils fantastic. I use them a lot.
As a preventive measure, simply slap on oil on damp skin EVERYDAY after shower.
sesame oil is very good (in health shop) and add a few drops lavender/geranium essential oil.
