I'm 26 weeks and was cleaning up after a party there was a big happy birthday balloon the ones that are silver inside and for me to put it in the bin I had to pop it and when I did i smelt this chemically smell from it not sure if it was the helium but now I'm worried that it will affect my baby as I smelt it x

🙄

CatsAndEyeliner · 09/10/2020 14:45

Wouldn’t google have been a quicker way to get an answer?

CatsAndEyeliner · 09/10/2020 14:46

A:Helium exposure is not harmful to mothers or the fetus unless there is an explosion. Helium is sometimes used in the treatment of acute asthma because it is inert.
^ Here you are, from Google. (Although why I did that for you I don’t know...)

verygreatful66 · 09/10/2020 14:48

@CatsAndEyeliner who said I didn't google ? No one said that I already did but did not see much useful sources ask before you assume boo

Oh OP I’ve just looked up your posting history. You sound really very anxious. Have you spoken to anyone about this?

verygreatful66 · 09/10/2020 14:49

@Skyliner001 🙄? If you find my question annoying come off my post love we are all mums on here first time mums like me are overly worried about stuff especially like me who's experienced a miscarriage please don't come on my post if you are going to be rude darling keep it moving

OP posts:
verygreatful66 · 09/10/2020 14:51

@CatsAndEyeliner of course I am as you don't know my history about getting pregnant as I stated I've experienced a miscarriage before so I am overly worried which my midwife said is to totally fine

OP posts:
CatsAndEyeliner · 09/10/2020 14:52

I’m glad you’re talking to your midwife about it.

verygreatful66 · 09/10/2020 14:56

@CatsAndEyeliner thank you for your response on the google search ... but I just didn't understand why you was being rude in the first place I thought mumsnet was a place for all women to come to express anything weather pregnancy, advice , health. Issues etc if that's not the case and there will be people on here like you that will make me feel bad about the health of my child

Heya, I'm sure baby will.be fine. I thought you were gonna say you'd been inhaling it! Blush

Superscientist · 09/10/2020 15:14

Helium is odorless so it won't have been that, there might have been a coating on the inside of the balloon. The nose is sensitive and it only takes a tiny amount of a chemical to be able smell it much below levels the are dangerous.

Changethetoner · 09/10/2020 15:18

It is potentially harmful, teenagers inhale it from the little canisters for cake decorating, to get a quick happy feeling. But if you only got a whiff, rather than actively inhaling, I'm sure you're fine.

CatsAndEyeliner · 09/10/2020 15:19

But of a leap to suggest I’ve said anything negative at all about the health of your child. In fact I was the one who found you positive information.

PurpleDaisies · 09/10/2020 15:24

Your comments to @CatsAndEyeliner are really unfair.

Utini · 09/10/2020 15:27

@Changethetoner that's nitrous oxide, helium is completely inert and won't do you any harm (or get you high).

Ohalrightthen · 09/10/2020 15:28

@verygreatful66 you sound very anxious, and you're having a pretty huge overreaction to the responses you've got here, which i think goes a little beyond "overly worried".

As someone who had multiple miscarriages before a healthy baby, i get how stressful and scary it can be, but this level of anxiety really isn't good for you. Please speak to your midwife again, i think you need more mental health support.

Or, if you're always this aggressive, maybe think about whether or not you're standing in a glass house before you start throwing stones.

Skyliner001 · 09/10/2020 15:38

Glad you are talking to someone 🙄

Spam88 · 09/10/2020 15:52

@Changethetoner that's nitrous oxide (laughing gas). You'd be pretty disappointed if you inhaled helium.

I'm pretty sure they add oxygen to helium balloons these days, for the very reason that they know many people will inhale them deliberately for the cool, squeaky voice!! So don't panic, OP! Enjoy your pregnancy x
