Should I tell work?

Hi all. I'm 8+3 right now and I haven't told work yet. I work security in a clinic right now. There are no patients at night so no covid risk. No dangerous work etc despite it being security.

So I'm wondering if I need to tell them just now or wait till after my scan.

When I was pregnant in 2016 I had to tell them the minute I was pregnant as I worked in a volatile industry.

Meant to add some of the positions are external so standing outside all night for 12.5hrs and they have no shelter etc apart from breaks.

Do you work alone at all? I would say you only need to tell them at this point if your role puts you at risk at all - lone working, heavy lifting etc. A company can only protect you (and that's the only reason to tell them at this stage) if they know you need protecting in some way. If not you can wait until 3 months (15 weeks) before baby is due (although if you wait that long someone will clock it).

Just read second post. If your role involves you standing outside (especially as winter is coming) for 12.5 hours I'd suggest you tell them and don't do that! Where I work we have people who stand for 12 hours but when we're told someone is pregnant we give them a chair and move them around different roles so there's no standing for long periods, you shouldn't do that at any stage of your pregnancy.

No i don't work alone. Well the positions are 1 man but there are 20 odd of us on site at night. I know last time I wasn't allowed to work alone. Which sucked as I preferred it lol.

The contract we are on ends in February (at the moment) and I'll be 28 weeks by then.

I also won't get maternity pay as I'm on a zero hour contract.

They shouldn't clock it by then as I'm a size 16/18 and as its winter and external ill have plenty of layers on.

I might wait till after my scan then and tell them. I didn't tell them last time I was pregnant and I was glad I didn't as I had a miscarriage. I did have to tell my manager at one point though as I needed a night off as I was in too much pain

That sounds like a good plan, good luck. Just remember if it does get a bit much don't suffer in silence, let them know xx

I will don't worry. I'm just worried they'll tell me to stop working there but I cant see why. Probably just my mind in over drive.

No one is allowed in with a positive result or waiting etc. So there is little risk there.

They can't legally dismiss you for being pregnant but I know it doesn't stop some companies so if you think they might best keep quiet until you have to tell them 👍

GrandTheftWalrus · 09/10/2020 16:19

They wouldn't dismiss me anyways. They do have pregnant people working events etc. I'm just worried because of where we are working just now.
