Apparently too many needles affect quality of scan

I went for my 12 scan on Monday and baby was just not playing ball. He was in the most awkward of positions and would move, to another awkward position..
It took the sonographer 20 mins to get the measurements she needed.

Anyway, she must have noticed the bruises on my tummy from the progesterone injections im onn and she mentioned that after a substantial time of injecting into the belly, can have an affect the tummy fat which in turn makes getting a decent image on a scan difficult.

Ive had quite a few scans, due to being under the recurrent miscarriage clinic and all haven't been of great quality.

Has anyone else heard of this?

I haven't heard of this, and I have injected a lot.

Will also be interested to know if anyone else has heard the same OP.

I do regularly get lumps from injecting but over time they seem to go.

Might create scar tissue.

I have had daily injections in my stomach since 5 weeks pregnant, due to previous misscarriages. I’m 38 weeks now, so a (not that im counting 🙈) total of 242 injections I’ve had. I’ve also had lots of early scans, and scans through my pregnancy (16 in total). They have all been fine and of reasonable quality, and whilst they’ve commented on the bruising, they have never mentioned this affecting the scan in anyway. I get the typical lumps and bruises too which last a few weeks. Hopefully when your baby gets a little bit bigger and in a better position, you get a better quality scan.

I think she presumed i was on clexane as she mentioned it.
The needles for Clexane are slightly thicker if i remember. The needles ive been using are so fine, i struggle to see how it could have such affect.
I have a private scan in a few weeks so i may ask the sonographer there but im thinking its a load of tosh....

I was on clexane(thicker needles indeed) and progesterone injections for the run up and the first three months and had several early scans at the clinic and EPU without issue. I had two egg collections, two fresh and two frozen transfers so several stretches of daily injections. Two years on I am still quite surprised there are no marks!

If your carrying a lot of extra fat around your belly that can interfere with the scan.

JacobReesMogadishu · 09/10/2020 06:37

Been a midwife 20 years and never heard this. 🤷‍♀️

Aquicknamechange2019 · 09/10/2020 07:20

I've also been on clexane since 5 weeks (am now 24). Ive has multiple scans and this has never been an issue. It's more likely to be her equipment.

Ned2021 · 09/10/2020 08:00

I think what she is getting at is the length of time ive been injecting on and off.
I mean, i have had 8 years of IVF treatment and 8 cycles (yikes).

1 pregnancy with Clexane to birth (34 weeks) and this pregnancy of injecting to 14 weeks..
That said, i dont think its accurate what she said.
A previous poster did suggest about belly fat, which i do have from DS (and too much cake) so perhaps its that

I have type 1 diabetes and have injected so much into my belly, it's more scar tissue than something else. (Bubbly due to scar tissue). No problems at the scan.

SharpLily · 09/10/2020 08:07

I think she’s just being rather impatient, to be honest. For health reasons neither of my children were in the traditional positions all through my pregnancies which, combined with their fidgeting, did make it difficult to obtain the necessary data during scans. It was certainly never less than 20 minutes and many appointments ran to over an hour without results and had to be repeated. My midwives didn’t make any complaints and didn’t seem to find it that unusual.

Parkandride · 09/10/2020 10:21

That's interesting, I've never heard that before in ivf groups etc!
