Vitamin D tablets given by pharmacist say ‘not suitable for pregnant women’ help!

Hello!
I’m 8 weeks pregnant and been taking 25micrograms of vitamin D for last 4 week by accident! Didn’t realise only needed 10mcg.

So after no luck of finding ANY in the supermarket, I went and asked a pharmacist. She gave me Aciferol 400 iu (expensive but she told me it was because they don’t sell them on shelves 🤨)

I said to her ‘these are the ones with the recommended dosage for pregnancy?’ She said yes.
So I’ve took one, got home, and read the back of the pot for it to say ‘not suitable for pregnant or lactating mothers’

WTF!!! My head is going round in f**g circles man. I am worried about every little thing in my body. Can anyone advise if I’ve done something very wrong? Im going to boots tomorrow instead and asking them and getting some others!!! Pd off and freaking out 😫 first trimester anxiety is real

If its just bog standard vitamin D3 then i dont see why it couldn't be taken by pregnant women. What does it actually say?

P.s. 25ug would be fine to take too

The majority of OTC supplements these days say not suitable for pregnant or lactating women, unless they're specific maternity supplements. It's largely due to the thalidomide & similar disasters. Highly unethical & unsafe to experiment on pregnant women. Tests on animals not necessarily reliable as not all animals react the same as humans.

OverTheRainbow88 · 06/10/2020 17:41

I did the same in first pregnancy but throughout, no harm done at all.

The only place I can find 10 is boots.

Also baby’s need 10 a day as well from birth of breastfed so it can’t be doing them any harm.

OverTheRainbow88 · 06/10/2020 17:42

Also breastfeeding mums are encouraged to take vit D

dementedpixie · 06/10/2020 17:43

The maximum amount you should take is 100ug (4000IU) 25ug is perfectly ok to take

From nhs

Do not take more than 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) of vitamin D a day as it could be harmful. This applies to adults, including pregnant and breastfeeding women and the elderly, and children aged 11 to 17 years.

I bought my vitamin D3 from amazon (25ug). The kids use a 10ug spray also from amazon

In reality, a low level vitamin D supplement is most likely safe.
Vitamin A supplements, on the other hand, should be avoided during pregnancy.

If you're unsure about vitamins, how about taking a pregnancy specific multivitamin.

dementedpixie · 06/10/2020 17:48

Often a multivitamin does not have the recommended amount of vitamin D in it

Cafeaulait27 · 06/10/2020 17:51

I’ve been taking 25 for ages and I’m now 8 weeks, back of pack just says to consult a doctor if pregnant. All my midwife said is ‘are you taking vitamin d’ and I said yes... she didn’t even ask me how much. I think it must be fine, the warning must just be to cover themselves although it does sound a bit OTT and I can see why you’re worried!

BessieBye · 06/10/2020 17:58

Thanks ladies!!!
Normally medicines/vitamins say ‘consult a GP before taking them if you are pregnant’. This one says ‘not suitable for pregnant women’ which made me think FFS!

Sorry if I’m sounding dramatic, first pregnancy, first time for all of this and a chronic over thinker.

I rang my midwife and told her about the 25mcg and she told me it won’t have done any harm but go and get the lower dosage. I’m seeing her on Thursday for bloods so I’ll take the pot with me and ask her then.

For the person asking about the packaging, here is a photo attached.. I was supposed to attach it to original post haha 😄

NHS says 25ug is ok too. If you were very worried about taking more than 10ug then take the 25ug ones every 2 days instead of every day

DueNumberTwo · 06/10/2020 18:01

25ug is fine to take

dementedpixie · 06/10/2020 18:02

It does say its ok if directed to take them by a physician, which you were

BessieBye · 06/10/2020 18:06

Thanks all

@dementedpixie I know, I think I just freaked cos of the wording or it had something else in. It’s definitely not got any Vitamin A in as pharmacist said ‘you can’t have Vit A’ which I know already.

Just wanted reassurance cos I send myself potty!!!!
