TMI coming up! Sorry

I have had piles for years - only surfacing (so to speak) every 3 years or so. This pregnancy however they have reared their ugly head. Not too bad yet but I am worried about all the pressure applied during labour/childbirth. Is there anything I can do to easy the pain in advance??

I got a rather large pile after my 2nd, I find preparation H clear gel is the best thing and because it's clear it's not so messy as other cremes.
I had scottish midwife and I can still remember her exclaiming "ooh yes dear it is a wee beast!" when she took a look below! She sounded just like Mrs Doubtfire.

you shouldn't have any trouble in childbirth - but in the meantime why not try and reduce them - the normal advice is bran - but I found this didn't agree with me so now I have Linseeds on my cereal (about 4 tspns) - they're from Holland and Barrett and really cheap! I had piles for years but they're not a problem now! - Good Luck!

I've had piles on and off for years but I've found that eating all-bran once or twice a day really helps, it's a bit boring but ok for brekkie with some fruit...

Thank you all. Not an all-bran person but will try out linseed and prep H gel.

I advise an enema before the birth or else you will have a tough time of it. I had full bowels before i gave birth and I have suffered since (4 Months). I did not have piles whilst pregnant or before. Drink lots of water too

Nimme · 21/10/2004 18:42

Thank you Amai - I was seriously thinking about having an enema anyway (for vanity purposes) but that confirms it for me.

Can we use any of the creams while we are still pregnant?

Nimme · 22/10/2004 17:56

I don't know Beansprout but I have already used Anusol cream the other week as I was in agony - but then I have also popped Sudafed on the really stuffy-nose nights (and eaten prawns and peanuts....)

in my day you had an enema and no arguments!

my second and third pregancies were little sachets of gel but my first? try this - a long pink tube, a funnel and what seemed like gallons of water - get the picture? - lar-ver-lee

tmi I know - but you gotta laugh - thank the lord things have moved on!

My advice on the piles front is take up pilates. I did this at the beginning of my second pregnancy and it's sorted out about 10 long term problems, piles included! I'm now in better shape than i was before having kids which is pretty amazing considering I'm a bit of an old codger

I too had piles most of my adult life and then even worse when I got pregnant. The only thing that has ever worked for me (and it really does give immediate relief) is Proctofoam. It's available on prescription and you can definitely use it during pregnancy. Don't accept any substitutes...it's the only thing that really works...(make sure you use it outside as well as in)

I had the piles from hell towards the end of my pregnancy. So bad that I ended up at the doctor's surgery in tears and asking to see a doctor/midwife/nurse or anyone who could don a pair of surgical gloves! I was in so much pain that I was leaning on the counter and the receptionist ushered me into an empty consulting room, thinking I was in labour! I was examined twice, the second time by the roughest doctor I have ever known; I wanted to rip his head off and shove it up his %^&$!They then made noises about sending me to casualty to have them cut out! Eeeeewwwwww. . In the end I was prescribed cream and suppositories and they cleared up in a few days. Not something I'd wish on my worst enemy. Well...maybe on my VERY worst enemy. Yes, definately. Tee hee.
