Hi all! Currently 21 weeks pregnant and terrified of contracting coronavirus.

I have just read this: www.medpagetoday.com/infectiousdisease/covid19/86261

Apparently pregnant women are likely to miscarry if they contract coronavirus, I'm also asthmatic which is scary in itself.

What do you guys think?

Thanks Smile

I think that article doesn’t say that women are likely to miscarry if they contract coronavirus.

If you’re terrified then reading articles like that is not going to help you.

Any infection can increase the risk of miscarriage. Including a flu, chest infection, UTI. So far there isn’t any evidence to suggest that COVID-19 has much of an impact on pregnancy. A few summary points:

  • it does seem to be able to transmit vertically (mother to foetus), but there have been no reports of congenital abnormalities.
  • in a case series, only severe COVID-19 was associated with premature birth (more likely induced in order to help the mothers recovery), but it did not cause very premature births (

I know somebody who is pregnant and has it and she's absolutely fine and so is baby

The article says ‘this case series does not establish risk; rather, documenting these cases cautions against assuming a low risk before solid data become available.’

That is very different to ‘likely to miscarry’. Essentially, we don’t currently know enough to be certain that coronavirus poses no risk to pregnant women, but anecdotal data and evidence from other respiratory illnesses suggests that there may be some increased risk. Importantly, that risk is likely to still be low, even if it isn’t non-zero.

Continue to take sensible precautions (wash your hands, don’t touch your face, observe social distancing, wear a mask) but don’t panic.
