Positive tests, when should I book docs appointment?

So I've had 4 positive tests. My period is due tomorrow so will obviously make sure AF doesn't turn up! But when should I be booking an appointment at the doctors?

This is my first and I'm just so worried to get my hopes up and jump the gun on anything, I don't want to jinx it!

At mine they wouldn’t see me until 11-12 weeks as they don’t do anything.
Midwives too, not interested until after 12 weeks.
I had a telephone conversation with midwives at around 10 weeks I think and was referred for the usual scan at that time.
Then the medical people got involved.

Pickypolly · 04/10/2020 16:20

Oh and please believe me when I tell you that there is NO such thing as jinxing anything. You have absolutely no control over what will or won’t be and nothing that you do will influence this.

Newmother321 · 04/10/2020 16:24

@Pickypolly oh god, I hope I don't have to wait that long, I'll be worried right up till I'm told everything is normal Shock

Phone the surgery and ask for a booking appointment with a midwife around the 7/9 week mark.
Doctors don’t need to see you.
Oh and as PP said....you can’t jinx anything. Congratulations.

You won't need to see the doctor. Contact your doctors surgery and they'll advise of the next steps. They'll most likely give you an email address or advise of a website on which to self-refer. A midwife will likely contact you to make you a booking in appointment for around 8 weeks ish. It depends widely on where you live so phoning the doctors surgery is the best start.

Oneandabean · 04/10/2020 16:35

I had to ring midwives straight away (day after missed period) and they got back to me with a booking appointment for 8 weeks. You need to call sooner rather than later as if they’re busy you may have to wait longer

BlusteryShowers · 04/10/2020 16:36

You don't need to see the doctor. I went with my first and to be honest he seemed annoyed I'd wasted an appointment. Just ring the receptionist, tell them you're pregnant and ask to be referred to midwife services.

Do chase it up if you've not had any contact from a midwife by 8/9 weeks though. My referral got missed so I was late for my booking and 12 week scan as a result.

@Newmother321 I think the next steps depend on your area. I’m pretty sure it’s standard everywhere that a GP doesn’t see you to confirm your pregnancy. Some places have an online self referral to the midwife but in my area it was a case of calling the receptionist at my GP surgery and she booked me in for a booking appointment with the midwife at about 9.5weeks. That appointment was done over the phone due to covid, not sure if that’s still the case 🤷🏻‍♀️ The midwife then got the ball rolling with next appointments so I then got a letter with a 12 week scan date. It wasn’t until that scan that pregnancy was actually confirmed I’m afraid!

TheDaydreamBelievers · 04/10/2020 16:40

I called the midwife line the day I tested positive and they booked me in for the 9week appt and12 week scan there and then (NHS ggc in scotland)

Sls668 · 04/10/2020 16:43

This seems to change in each area as our GP likes you to get in touch early on (you book midwives through the GP receptionist at my surgery). I think, from what I remember, they wanted to see me at 8 weeks

bonbonours · 04/10/2020 16:47

I agree with the others who say you don't see a doctor at all unless there's something wrong. Otherwise you will just be allocated a midwife for your antenatal care. This might be bookable through your GP surgery though, depending where you are. A test done by a doctor would be exactly the same as a home test do if your test is positive, then you are pregnant, you don't need a health care professional to confirm it. Congratulations!

I'm my LA area we phone the midwife ourselves for a booking in appointment at 8 weeks. No ha in phoning and asking.

emptyshelvesagain · 04/10/2020 17:06

Congratulations Thanks

Our area is self refer to midwife - you can call your surgery to ask and they will point you in the right direction

MaverickDanger · 04/10/2020 17:08

Check on your local GP website. Mine has a page for pregnancy and you have to fill out a self referral form on the local hospital website.

The community midwife then contacted me for a booking in appointment (face to face back in May) at the GP surgery at about 9 weeks.

PotteringAlong · 04/10/2020 17:11

As everyone else said, depending on the area you probably won’t need a doctors appointment. I was seen at about 9 weeks every time for my booking in appointment.

Congratulations Flowers

I called GP when I found out at 4/5 weeks but couldn't get an appointment till was 9 weeks (should have been 8 but they were fully booked) with midwife. They then referred me to the hospital for our 12 week scan :)

peachypetite · 04/10/2020 19:20

Google the name of your maternity unit + self referral and you’ll probably get all the info there/form to fill.
