Tubal ligation during caesarean

Just after some of your experiences. I have done a lot of reading around it but would like to hear from actual ladies who have had it or considered it.
Did you have this done?
Did you regret it?
What made you decide to have it done?
Any advice for me considering it?

Thanks Flowers

Hi op,

I made a post about this recently as I was given the option to have ligation during my section (next week).
I consented and filled out forms but DH was upset about the choice incase anything were to happen to one of our children and wanted more - that's the only reason we'd have more now.
We've compromised that if we don't have another child within 5 years that DH will have a vasectomy instead.

If you're 100% sure you'll never want more children then id definitely go for it.

I had my tubes tied, not during a cs, and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Absolutely no regrets.

I would 100% do this if they’d let me (aiming for VBAC but do have a section date booked just in case). Sadly I’m under 30 and this is only baby number 2 so there’s no way the NHS will let me.

Why would they not? I'm only 31 and having baby number 2. It was asked routinely at my consultation re section.

Tale of caution here... I had my tubes cut during my c section of my third baby. All fine. My 4th baby is now 8 weeks old. Yes, that's right, I got pregnant again despite being sterilised. It appears that the failure rate goes up when it's done during a c section, something I was not made aware of.
I don't regret doing it, they redid it when I had my section with my fourth but if I could go back in time, I would not have done it during my c section but as a separate operation.

Thank you all for your responses. I'm torn between having it done (section booked for next week and am pregnant with DC3) as I have had 3 pregnancies full of complications, plus, I'm content with 3. However, someone above mentioned something happening to one of their kids, and this is something in my mind as well, as unlikely and awful a thought that is.

I am wondering about having a copper iud inserted during the procedure, but this also has several drawbacks.

Appreciate your responses ladies, and thanks again.

@022828MAN That’s really interesting. I’m a midwife and have only ever seen it done/heard of it offered to women with 4 or 5 babies.

I hate being pregnant. It’s something that I genuinely never want to do again. I’m just about holding it together at the end of my second pregnancy but barely. The idea of going through it again (even if god forbid anything was to happen to this baby or DS) brings me to the verge of a panic attack.

Yeah, at my appointment the consultant was discussing risks of any future c sections following this upcoming one (which will be my second), and I responded that I don't plan to have anymore children as two was always my maximum. She then said that if I was sure of that they could perform the ligation during the procedure.
I did think (and articulated to her) that I thought it was brilliant they were allowing that as an option, as I'd always believed women really struggled to be sterilised if they wanted!
Definitely worth discussing and thinking about for you!

I’m 31 and asked to have it done when DC2 was born and I was 30 and they did it with no issues. I’d had hyperemesis with both pregnancies and knew I didn’t want any other children so if I was to fall pregnant again I’d have a termination and I told them this. I didn’t have my tubes tied - I actually had them removed as that is what the consultant who did my section preferred doing due to some studies showing that ovarian cancer can start in the Fallopian tubes. On a hormonal level I was upset for the first few weeks when thinking “oh I’ll never have another baby” and “I’ll never be pregnant again” but logically and practically I knew I didn’t want more children and even if something was to happen to these two it’s not like I could make a replacement for them.

itsallgonepw · 04/10/2020 15:58

I had it done during my cs with my twins. They were my 3rd and 4th babies. No issues, although I was warned by the surgeon that the tubes are swollen during pregnancy so as the body returns back to it’s pre pregnancy state they could untie. She cut /clipped and tied my tubes. 8 years on and it’s still a success and haven’t had any issues.

It has been a really positive decision for me. I didn’t want anymore children, was 38 and didn’t want to spend years on the pill.
It’s one less thing to worry about, but it was a request they weren’t used to, and every time I see a new GP and they ask me about contraception they always seem a bit surprised as it’s not that common apparently.
