I had my growth scan yesterday and the Sonographer has organised for me to have a test for GD (just the blood test - assuming this is because of covid) due to baby’s AC measurement being over 95th centile.

Has anyone had GD diagnosed this late on in their pregnancy and If so how was it treated this late on?

Slightly concerned as baby was measuring at 95th centile for abdomen at 28 week scan but this was not picked up at the time..

Also has anyone just had a fasting blood test to diagnose rather than the GTT test, was it picked up this way?

Yes, often had it and also spoke to a friend who was a doctor researching GD about it. If several are normal and one is high don’t worry about it. Otherwise you can average three or five readings.

New2020 · 04/10/2020 17:12

@GirlCalledJames thanks..it's so demoralising to get that high reading then so frustrating that they are all so different :( I couldn't help but feel upset. .cue pregnancy tears

I got 7.8, 6.4, 6.8 and 5.8

Did your doctor friend say why they were so different literally in the space of minutes

Something to do with the blood you get from a finger prick being very variable. Blood drawn from a vein is more reliable but obviously not suited for regular monitoring at home.

@Luckyme30 I came looking for info on GD and found your thread. Have you had a GTT?

I'm 28+4 just had a growth scan and baby is off the scale for AC!! They've booked me in first thing tomorrow for GTT and I'm panicking a little bit!

I've just got a feeling it'll be confirmed as GD.

Mc3209 · 08/10/2020 16:39

I am joining you. Currently 36+5, belly was measuring at 97th percentile (up from usual 90th) last midwife visit. That was not enough to trigger NHS scan, so I had a private one today which showed abdominal circumference >97% with a lot of baby belly fat. Random fasting glucose was normal at 28 weeks. Spoke my midwife who wasn't too impressed and said 'if I hadn't had the private scan I wouldn't know' ie it wouldn't have been a problem and I am worrying for nothing. Thankfully got NHS scan arranged this Saturday. No further testing for GD arranged yet... a bit concerned about the whole situation.

passthemustard · 08/10/2020 19:57

@Mc3209 it's all very worrying and you haven't got long left! Are you feeling ok? I feel really rough 😩 but no idea if it's GD related or just normal pregnancy or something else!

Good luck at your next scan!!

Mc3209 · 08/10/2020 21:46

@passthemustard I am very tired, but I always blamed it on one of those pregnancy things. I hope you will manage to get to the bottom of why you are feeling rough.

Hi op,

My son is now 13 weeks old and I wasn't diagnosed GD until I received a letter 2 weeks after he was born. I knew I had it from about 30 weeks but nothing was being tested or picked up properly due to Covid. My son was breech but due to unmanaged GD he was born by c section at 37 weeks due to reduced growth at routine growth scan from 97th to 50th.

Make sure you get all treatment and help you need. Good luck 😊

passthemustard · 09/10/2020 17:01

@boymum4 I hope both your baby and you are ok?
How big was he at birth? When did you know he was breech?
Did you have any symptoms with GD?
So many questions .... sorry!

FolkSongSweet · 09/10/2020 17:11

I’ve just found out today I’ve got it at 36 weeks. No symptoms and a routine scan showed baby was big (all over, not just AC) so I did the GTT at 35+6. My fasting bloods were absolutely fine but the bloods after the drink and 2 hour wait were just above the cut off (7.8 and 7.7 is normal). I don’t even have an appointment to discuss it until next Friday when I’m 37 weeks so no idea what it’s going to mean for me. Was planning a home birth which they now won’t allow so feeling pretty devastated.

Dailyhandtowelwash · 09/10/2020 17:19

It’s worth having a discussion with them about the home birth with such a borderline result. I had a home birth after a GD pregnancy after agreeing with them what they would want to see at 37 weeks to sign me off. If I remember, they wanted diet controlled, with normal fluid levels. My baby never had a particularly large AC but I don’t remember if that played a part.

My community midwives were very supportive and suggested how to approach the consultant - have you tried talking it through with them?

FolkSongSweet · 09/10/2020 17:42

Thanks @Dailyhandtowelwash. I had slightly increased fluid levels on the scan as well. They look at 2 measures of amniotic fluid, the amniotic fluid index and single deepest pool. My AFI was normal but the deepest pool was 8.6 and the cut off is 8, so again borderline! They’ve said that the two results taken together plus 95th centile baby indicates GD so I guess that’s why. My fundal height is average so if I hadn’t had the scan I’d never have been picked up. No risk factors for GD and no symptoms. Not sure if it’s a blessing or a curse they’ve spotted it.

We're both fine luckily thank you!! He was only 7 lbs 1 and so so tiny! But apparently that's big for a baby born at 37 weeks, now at 13 weeks he's about 15 lbs 5 so deffo would have been big had he been in until 40 or 42!

I had loads of symptoms, shortness of breath, tiredness, dizziness, massive bump, fainting, sugar in urine and blood sugars as low as 2 or high as 14! I had the simple blood test not proper test due to Covid and it came back negative which is why I wasn't diagnosed until after he was born when they reviewed my blood sugar home kit. If it comes back negative for you make sure you push for the proper test!

He was breech from 30 weeks and was just stubborn, nothing I tried made him turn🤣

passthemustard · 11/10/2020 12:23

@boymum4 so glad you're both ok.

I've had shortness of breath the whole pregnancy, I'm now 29 weeks and feel rough as old dogs. My bump is massive but baby is over 97th centile so that makes sense! I'm exhausted and my wee smells like sugar puffs but nothing has been picked up on routine urine samples although I think I've only had one so far.

Ive only put on 10-12lbs and I'm in the normal bmi range normally. I just feel fluey the whole time, tired, muscle pain, headache, short of breath etc. Craving comfort food.

I had the GTT on Friday and they said results within a week. If it's not GD I've got no idea what's going on. And baby is also breech, I'm worried he's too fat to turn round 😂😂
