Blighted Ovum - Missed Misscarriage

I was sadly diagnosed with the above at my scan (11 weeks 2 days). The gestational sac was measuring at around 8 weeks. I am due a scan on Wednesday.

It is two days since the news and I have passed what appeared to be a small amount of pinky discharge and a few wipes of blood.

Does anyone have any experience of having a naturally managed miscarriage successfully or do these things take a long time to happen?

I am relieved my body has become in tune with what has happened and I just hope I can avoid medication/surgery.

Any advice/experience, please do share.

Hi there
I had a blighted ovum about a year ago. I was told at around 8 weeks and from them it took around one week to pass the sac. It's an awful waiting game and I'm sorry you're going through this. Sending hugs x

Hi OP, I also had this. I’m so sorry this has happened to you. After the scan where it was discovered I waited two weeks hoping I would miscarry naturally. Nothing happened by then so I had medical management as I didn’t feel I could go on waiting. I had some bleeding after taking the medication but it was about 5 days later that unexpectedly I bled more and had what felt like the main miscarriage.

I know it’s different for everybody. I read the information on the Miscarriage Association website. It tells you more about the options. I also rang their helpline and spoke to a very kind woman, so you could try that too if you’d like to talk to someone.

Wishing you all the best 💐

Hi @Anne1987

Sorry for your loss. I’ve had exactly the same recently, a blighted Ovum mmc. Mine was discovered at 9+5, nothing passed so at 11+2 I had the misoprostol medical management. That was difficult as there was such a large volume passing. Some people it works for some it doesn’t. Unfortunately 3 weeks later I still had a positive test so had to have surgical management/Erpc as had 4cm of retained tissue. I still had 4cm of retained tissue 4 weeks later and had to have another Erpc guided with a camera. I had a negative test 4 days after. I’ve been told that most people have success with either the medical or surgical and that I’m just very unlucky.

I’m now 12 weeks after and still waiting for AF, I’ve been assured this can be normal.

I’ve gone through all the stages of grief, at the moment it’s anger, angry at my body, angry at how long it’s taken so far, angry that in 2 months I would be due, angry at how long af is taking to come back.

But, you will get through it and you can try again. You will probably be fine and then it hits you again. It’s normal to be up and down. Xx

Hello OP,

Sorry to hear of your loss Sad
I had a blighted ovum, scan showed nothing in the sac at all at 9+3
I passed the tissue naturally 6 days later, I found a hot water bottle and painkillers helped xx

Hi OP,

Ever so sorry you are going through this.

I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum at around 6-7 weeks last year. I was having regular scans as EPU suspected an ectopic at 4 weeks and they saw the empty sac and kept rescanning and the sac was growing and HCG rising but nothing in the sac.

As I'd been waiting a few weeks for them to officially diagnose and I was so upset, I had medical management at 8 weeks as I wanted it all over with. I found the medical management extremely painful and traumatic for me, it was really unpleasant and I ended up back in hospital. It didn't work completely so ended up having the surgical management which I'd choose if the situation sadly arose again.

I had the general anaesthetic, woke up, felt completely fine and went home after 30 mins of being awake.

Sending you lots of love xx

So I was similar. Had a private scan eight weeks. Good heartbeat. Then another at ten weeks because of a small amount of pinky blood. No heartbeat. I wanted an erpc as was a bit scared to do it at home but they couldn't do it for a week. I had zilch bleeding for that week and I suspect it would have taken a long time as I had string positives for two weeks after erpc and faint for another two. The erpc physically was totally fine. No cramping or bleeding as was only in a few hours. I got pregnant again quickly after wards.

Thank you all for taking the time to comment, giving me both emotional and practical support.

Sadly, not much more progress has happened. I have three days until my follow up appointment, so I am hoping something will happen. If not, I feel I am now more comfortable to take up the offer of assistance (medical or surgical).

I am up and down - it is hard but I am so lucky to have a supportive husband and know in time we can hopefully try and again.

It just feels so cruel to have had my body play such a trick.

You have all been a great support and I am so sorry you have all had to go through this x
