Baths during pregnancy

I had a hot bath last night. I’m 11 weeks pregnant. I didn’t know it was something that I wasn’t supposed to do. I’ve never came across it until the news about Chrissy Teigen’s miscarriage today. Now very worried.

I had the same worry when I was in the first trimester but I was absolutely fine. You’re recommended to have a warm bath and not a hot bath. I think all of mines have probably been more hot than warm. Just be conscious of your body temperature and the temp of the water going forward but try not to be too hard on yourself Flowers

If you're worried then you could get babies bath thermometer early to use yourself? that's what i've been doing so i don't worry about it now

Cafeaulait27 · 02/10/2020 10:39

Oh, is hot baths one of the reasons why she lost her baby?

I’ve only ever read that having baths are ok in pregnancy, I’ve had quite a few and I’m 7 weeks. I don’t have reall really hot ones but they are quite warm?

Bit worried now!

IDontMindMarmite · 02/10/2020 10:42

What did you read about Chrissy Teagen's loss and baths?

lucymagoo · 02/10/2020 10:45

She lost her baby because her placenta wasn't strong enough and was bleeding heavily for weeks I don't think it was anything to do with having a bath

MichelleOR84 · 02/10/2020 10:46

I’ve had a few hot baths in both my pregnancies. I’m 8 months pregnant now and my bump doesn’t even fit in the bath water anymore 😂

I always thought a hot bath was more harmful to you incase of overheating than baby who is well protected in the womb anyway !

BertieBotts · 02/10/2020 10:47

You would have to have the bath scalding hot for it to do any harm, don't worry.

BertieBotts · 02/10/2020 10:48

Raising your core body temperature can be dangerous for the baby in the womb, but a hot bath won't raise your core body temperature.

MummyLaLa88 · 02/10/2020 10:58

Just use common sense - it will be fine. Warm baths are best, you can have your hot baths after bebe is born. Also Chrissy T baby lost has NOTHING to do with baths. She has had great issues with fertility in the past and had a weak placenta, poor woman.

BigusBumus · 02/10/2020 11:07

Baths are lovely in pregnancy at all stages!

Just be careful not to use any oils with Clary Sage in them though as that can induce labour. (Useful when you are full term though!)

pinacollama · 02/10/2020 11:33

I really miss my hot baths! My midwife advises me to have a warm bath, around 36/37 degrees, otherwise I’ll “cook the baby”!

pinacollama · 02/10/2020 11:33

Saying that, my best friend lives in Finland and pregnant women there use saunas throughout their pregnancies.

Lonoxo · 02/10/2020 13:12

@Cafeaulait27, yes that’s the article I was reading.

Thanks for all your comments. I have been so careful up until now. No more baths for the foreseeable future.

You can still have baths, just don't make them too hot

Turtleturtle81 · 02/10/2020 16:00

My midwife encourages me to take baths - they are perfectly safe in pregnancy as long as they are not too hot.

dementedpixie · 02/10/2020 16:04

There would be more of an issue with hot tubs, saunas, jacuzzi, etc. If the water turns your skin red its too hot so add more cold water. No need to avoid baths completely

www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/pregnancy/is-it-safe-to-use-a-sauna-or-jacuzzi-if-i-am-pregnant/

Parkandride · 02/10/2020 16:58

There's no point in a bath that's not scalding in my opinion, I'll have to wait!

In Expecting Better the author explains there was 2011 study into birth defects and mothers who had used hot tubs had a connection with 2 types of defects. This is supported by animal studies. The risk is in raising the body temp above 38C, so if you can have a cooler bath it's probably fine

2020N · 02/10/2020 17:01

It’s fine to have baths OP, after a day at work I’m in need of a bath to relax all of my muscles and to ease my bump discomfort! I pretty much have a hot bath every night. I say hot, because I can’t stand a lukewarm bath, but I’m just extra careful to make sure that I can get straight into the bath with ease, rather than slowly easing myself to adjust to the temp, make sure that it’s not too hot that my skin changes colour, or that I get sweaty. Other than that, I love my bath and look forward to it each evening with a cuppa & a few choccy biscuits to dunk in! x

WhiteCloud6 · 02/10/2020 18:17

I use a baby bath themomiter and have my bath at 38°. This is because during my first trimester I had a hot bath and got all clammy, skin went patchy and I felt like I was sweating, never happened before so got out and felt really dizzy and over heated. So ever since I use the baby bath themomiter I originally got for when the baby comes!

jazzibelle · 02/10/2020 18:43

Not to be overly pedantic, but can we refer to her loss as a miscarriage. She was over 20 weeks, it was a pregnancy loss and looks like she had to deliver.

jazzibelle · 02/10/2020 18:43

*not

Tangfastica · 02/10/2020 18:45

How did women wash before showers? They would have bathed. It's just about the temp.

theresaplaceforus · 02/10/2020 18:47

Baths are fine, just don’t have it too hot - the risk is more for you than the baby I think - anything too hot could make you faint etc but a nice relaxing warm bath is lovely in pregnancy especially as the weather is changing now

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 02/10/2020 18:56

Fine, baths can't be not enough to do damage as they cool. Apparently it's different with jacuzzis/hot tubs that stay heated but I would t be bothered about negative either to be honest.
