Pregnancy insomnia

I am so fed up of being awake for hours in the middle of the night.
I fall asleep quickly but then wake for the loo and am awake for ages. Aching hips are not helping matters.
Last night I was shattered and went to bed at 9:30. I was awake again by 12 and was still awake at 4am Sad my alarm went off at 6 for work.
Has anyone got any tips for overcoming this? I am desperate for a decent nights sleep before this baby arrives in 6 weeks.

Hi @Bubblebox, I"ve been sleeping very lightly rather than not sleeping. But a few others on MN suggest hot chocolate before bed and using 'this works - sleepy spray' since then I've noticed a big difference. Perhaps worth a shot!

Bubblebox · 30/09/2020 22:22

Thank you stardust. I will definitely look into the spray.
Staying away from hot chocolate though. It will only have me waking up needing a wee Grin

Are your sugar and iron levels ok? I had awful awful pregnancy insomnia and in hindsight I wonder if it was due to either of those (I had problems with both)

MonkeyPuddle · 30/09/2020 22:34

I listen to some birth affirmations or a guided meditation quietly on my phone with a switch off timer set for 30mins. I’ll do a bit of yoga sometimes as well, some some swooping cat cows and amended sun salutations.
Progressive muscle relaxation and breathing exercises help relax my mind and body which help me get back to sleep. I usually wake around 3am for a wee and do one f the above to get back over or I’ll just be awake til my alarm at 7am.

JustFrigginNameChange · 30/09/2020 22:36

You're not alone OP! I'm nearly 33 weeks and haven't had a decent nights sleep in ages

Bubblebox · 30/09/2020 22:45

@trunumber my iron levels were a bit low at my last test but I am taking iron tablets now which are causing their own problems. I may ask that they are checked again. Thank you, if not considered it.

I have tried guided meditation and audiobooks @MonkeyPuddle but start to get annoyed by then after a while. I would love to see dh’s face if he woke up to find me doing yoga. Grin

It’s crap @JustFrigginNameChange I am so tired and you would think that your body would be storing up all of the rest that it could get, but noooooo!
Isn’t pregnancy fun. Hmm

@Bubblebox isn't it just! Can I ask what problems your iron tablets are causing? I'm on them too. I've been getting frequent palpitations in the evening and I'm not sure what's causing it.

Bubblebox · 30/09/2020 22:49

Mainly headaches and issues with going to the toilet. Blush

I get palpitations too but had these before the iron tablets. I think that they are just another nice pregnancy symptom.
Similar to the aching pelvis, leg cramps, snoring and waking up choking on my own saliva. Grin
Sexy, I am not.

I bought an excessively expensive sleeping pillow which helped my hips and knees. But extra pillows may help, 2or 3 wedged between knees and behind back???

Bubblebox · 30/09/2020 22:54

Thanks @Feetupteashot. I have a full body pillow which does help with comfort, just not with sleep.
I am purposely keeping myself up tonight in the hope that when I do fall asleep, I’ll sleep through til a decent time.

Unfortunately it's one of those things. The best thing I did was not stress about it and that in itself helped. I listened to loads of podcasts on a sleep timer and found this helped too or got in to a good book 😊

In a few weeks you'll have forgotten all about this and you'll be woken up at all sorts of time so it's good to get used to it now 🤣

My baby is 5 months old now and sleeping well so you'll get your sleep back at some point 💓

Mc3209 · 01/10/2020 05:25

My new wake up time is 4am now. So annoying. And that's with me trying not to nap during the day... Just started mat leave, so at least no alarm clock in the morning thankfully.

Dontcarewhatmyusernameis · 01/10/2020 05:39

I keep waking up at 4.30am and can’t get back to sleep. Happened in my other pregnancies too 😩

Twizbe · 01/10/2020 07:32

I suffered really badly from it. No real tips but it is good prep for when baby comes.

I did find that the night before I had my son I slept amazingly well.

Bubblebox · 01/10/2020 10:05

Yes, I struggled with it with dd too but am absolutely knackered this time. I was awake again from 1 til 5 and then up for the day at 6:30.
Feel like a zombie and keep forgetting why I’ve gone into a room.
I don’t find it good prep, bloody stupid body should be storing up sleep like acorns for winter. Not cheating me out of it when I have the chance. Grin
