Worried about coronavirus

Hi all! Currently 20+1 weeks pregnant and live with my mom and partner.

My mom has recently gone back to work and refuses to wear a mask.

I'm terrified of getting coronavirus. I'm literally wearing a mask around the house and hand sanitising wherever I can.

Anybody else in a similar situation?

Thanks in advance Smile

Wearing a mask to protect yourself is the wrong use of a mask, they are designed to reduce spread from someone who's infected, if your parents were to ever get coronavirus then you would still likely contract it through your mucous membranes like eyes for example, the best way to protect yourself is hand hygiene and distancing but considering you live with your parents that would be difficult!

You actually have higher chances of catching flu or another virus than coronavirus right now, the media make it seem scary with the cases increasing but the survival rate for it is very high, always remember that part! Not saying you shouldn't be careful but wearing a mask all the time is a bit excessive

@EllieJai44 I've been wearing a face visor too as I've heard they protect you more than a face mask as you said, face masks are more to prevent making other people sick.

I live in Birmingham and we are on a local lockdown with rising cases so I'm very worried! I'm also an at risk category of being an asthmatic who is on very strong inhaler medication so I'm just worrying naturally.

Wearing a mask is not a hard thing to do and could prevent a higher viral load, so it's a shame your mother is refusing. While it is definitely preferable not to become infected and to avoid infection, there are a few things to remember about the virus re pregnancy:

  • it does seem to be able to transmit vertically (mother to foetus), but there have been no reports of congenital abnormalities)
  • in a case series, only severe COVID-19 was associated with premature birth (more likely induced in order to help the mothers recovery), but it did not cause very premature births (
