I know we've had lots of similar stories before about being told stuff that is total and utter bollox, but i thought i had to share this one with you today because it left me stumped.

A girl at work is 24 weeks pg with her first (lets call her "Girl A") and is very naive about pg in general (aren't we all first time around?!). Anyway Girl A, myself and another pg girl ("Girl B") were in the kitchen just chatting and myself and Girl B mentioned that we needed to drink more water at the mo, especially as Girl B has a cold which has made her quite thirsty. To my utter Girl A then piped up "Yes but you have to be careful about drinking too much water because it can cause Gestational Diabetes". I looked at her and was like Who on earth told you THAT?! She just mumbled that she couldn't remember now. But honestly, what utter bollox!! I've never heard of such a thing!

perhaps she's misunderstood that one cause of too much water (surrounding the baby) is G diabetes

RGPargy · 10/10/2007 13:16

hmmm maybe she's got it confuddled then.

I reckon she might have meant that when you have diabetes, you tend to want to drink loads of water!

It's like Chinese whispers!

I was looking for answers when I was pg and thought who better to ask than my own mum, shes had a baby she should know.
So I asked her what exactly happens when they cut the um.cord.
She looked at me very seriously and said "It was such a long time ago,but I'm sure when they cut it,it springs back up inside ready for the next one!!!"
No need to say I went somewhere else for my next question!!

RGPargy · 10/10/2007 14:34

hahahahaha!!!!!! Trick, that's hilarious!!!

My MIL confided to me that when she was pregnant with her 2 DCs, her MIL made her drink a cup of oil (almond) i think every day to help loosen up her pelvis for delivery
She suggested I might like to try it.

PMSL Trick! I think Bearus ahs it- she is confused between cause and effects of GD.

My Mum just says 'oh yu've had babies what can I teach you' if Ia sk for advice but the girl I know from home - well she told me I couldn't have a fourth as I was over 30 and wouldn't be fertile any more . Mind you this girl had private IVF over TTC as her Mum told her it would be easier- he second was conceived accidentally LOL- no issues whatsoever with fertility.... (she is exceptionally gullible though)

omg trick and darrell...and people wonder why modern parents don't go to their elders...lol...

and RGPargy...the poor girl is confused, she either misunderstood as QuoQu said or what Bearus said....

3andnogore · 10/10/2007 14:46

oh Peachy...that is gullible...

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 10/10/2007 14:49

She's always been the same poor soul! her Mum just wanted a baby ASAP in the family (they have a small business to pass on but think they're royalty desperatel;y seeking the next Heir LOL), plus I don't think Mum could stand the idea of 'her baby' doing that sex thing (the stories I coudl tell her Mum pmsl)

3andnogore · 10/10/2007 14:53

Someone told me that rubbing your belly could bring on early labour!! But made me feel guilty about rubbing my belly for at least 3 minutes!

bumperlicious · 11/10/2007 20:25

baby born with lots of hair - cue lots of people saying "oh, did you bad indigestion when pg?"

bumperlicious · 11/10/2007 20:26

get bad indigestion

jamila169 · 12/10/2007 00:08

My mum still tells the story about when her elder sister was expecting her first and said to her 'do you think it'll hurt when they take the baby out?' Mum, not had any babies yet say's 'what do you mean?' Bis sis says ' well they cut you along that brown line on your belly don't they?' Mum pisses self laughing and says 'Er Gill, well you know how it got in there don't you?' sis says ' yeeessss' Mums says 'well that's how it gets out' big sis says 'oh my god' and turns green
My aunt had 3 kids, virtually painless labours - my uncle by contrast spent each labour doubled up in agony!

One of my friend's mums told me that when she had her first child (in 1958) she went to hospital having labour pains but no one had told her how the baby was going to come out - she had a vague idea it would be through her belly button!

AnnainNZ · 12/10/2007 01:37

The first website I looked at when I found out I was pg told me to drink only bottled water for the entire pg, not to have baths AT ALL and not to drink tea AT ALL.

I decided life was not really worth it without tea and baths . Then I decided the website was a load of bollocks.

(Yes, I know, really hot baths not a great idea, loads of caffeine not great, but still..no baths/tea/tap water for 9 months?)

There was also the ever-so-helpful friend of dh's who was incredibly concerned that I was - horror of horrors - DRIVING A CAR WHILE 19 WEEKS PREGNANT! Clearly being pg means you can't press your feet on small pedals and operate a gear stick! Ooh, and steer at the same time!

Tosser.

sarahloumadam · 12/10/2007 08:44

Think advice back in the day must have been to stop driving at a certain point as several older women have expressed concern over me still driving at 30 weeks plus. (LOL at 19 weeks Anna - did you even have a bump at that point?). FFS, driving is the least of my worries!

Hayleyandbaby · 13/10/2007 12:16

My MIL told me that I'll have terrible sickness through the whole pregnancy and labour because she did with my DP so I would because it's his child! And also that when I'm in labour I'll be able to stop myself pooping because I'll be able to tell the difference between what hole things are coming out of!!! As if I'll care by then!! Let alone know. Also not to touch orange juice as it'll make me lose the baby.

She tells me another cracker everytime I see her.
