12 week scan questions

I had my 12 week scan yesterday and found the ultrasound so sore, I asked if this was normal and she said she wasn’t pressing that hard but it felt like she was digging in? I know they need to be really accurate to get measurements but my experience was awful, she has asked me to come back in two weeks as she couldn’t get all the measurements as baby was comfy in his own wee position but when I asked if that was normal and that everything is ok she was very dismissive and I left feeling more gutted than happy. Has anyone else had a 12 week scan but had to go back again for measurements? And is the pain normal to feel when having the ultrasound?

Thanks! X

I haven’t had to go back to be scanned after any of my scans but I was really really sore after my 20 week scan. She had to press really hard as baby was moving so much.
They are well protected in there so try not to worrySmile

They do need to press quite hard as baby is only tiny - I always worry about peeing myself! Not 12 weeks but I've had two rescans following 20 week - they just need to check they can see everything and baby grows fairly rapidly so what they can see in 2 weeks time might be much clearer.

I’ve never had any soreness from ultrasound, even with a super wriggly baby.
They can ask you back if they can’t get the measurements, babies don’t always do as they’re told.

They do need to press quite hard early on as baby is very small. I haven’t had to go back I very nearly did on my 20 week scan because of baby’s position but she had me turn on my side then go for a walk come back go for another walk and prodded me about and baby eventually turned to get the measurement she needed - it wasn’t the most comfortable of experiences.
My friend - who is 31 weeks at the moment - has had to go back for both the 12 and 20 week because of baby’s position and all of going fine with her pregnancy x

I was sore after mine - I'm having twins though so scan took a long time. They couldn't get all the measurements at my 12 week scan but things like the NT measurement can't be done 2 weeks later. Which measurements didn't she get?

I'm on my third baby now and had my 20 week scan a couple of weeks ago. I was supposed to go back today for a rescan as they couldn't get a front view of the heart. Pretty normal.
As for it hurting, all mine have been pretty painful and I say that as someone who has a pretty high pain threshold. I went for a scan at 16 weeks to find out the sec of the baby, there were 2 different women doing the scan, the first one couldn't get a picture of the baby. She was digging in, and it was sore. When I came back the second woman gave it a go. She didn't hurt me at all and managed to get a clear enough picture to tell the sex, so yes a lot of them do dig in, but it's unnecessary.

I did find my 12 week scan and dopplers at 18 weeks (i had a bleed so had to stay in hospital to be monitored) uncomfortable as they have to press down hard to measure baby. My 20 week and 28 week scan weren't too bad. Ive had to have extra scans at 28 and 32 weeks due to health issues in my teens and having a low lying placenta

I haven’t been called back for rescan but almost had to at my 20wk scan with this baby. She wouldn’t move to allow Sonographer to fully check spine. Just being a stubborn girl I think haha right on last chance she did but if she hadn’t I’d have had to go back.

Last week at 28wk growth scan Sonographer was wanting to check cord but baby had her hand on it! In end she did move them so didn’t have to go back.

I've had to go back for both my 12 and 20 week scans. It could be that baby was measuring less than 12 weeks (they need to be a certain length to do NT measurement etc but I can't remember what the length is exactly) so it could be as simple as that. That has happened to me with both my babies as I have long cycles so I'm always measuring a little bit behind what they expect from last period.

I do think they need to press quite firmly to get a clear picture, and I guess each person's perception of pain is different too.

Thank you for all your replies, makes me feel so much better! Didn’t expect any pain with a scan but was definitely uncomfortable so glad to hear I’m not the only one!

The measurements she wasn’t happy with were for the Down syndrome tests the way baby was lying they weren’t able to get behind the neck. We tried the whole going for a walk, jumping up and down but baby would only moved it’s arms up and down not change their position. Maybe will have better luck in two weeks! Smile

@Amelia49

Just bare in mind that they can't do the downs measurements after 13+6 as it's not accurate so not sure whether waiting 2 weeks will take you past that date
