Luckily for me I had fab m-i-l who made many baby things (washable nappies, knitted things). Nappies - need 3 dozen. Knitted things - useless, sadly, as DS overheated like anything (difficult seeing as he was a December baby).

Because of overheating thing, anything fleecy was ruled out, especially fleecy sleepbags and fleecy baby trousers (like ski-pants, did you ever?!)

Breast pump absolutely the most useful thing ever (hand one), even if routinely breast feeding -can be tricky to get used to but worth persevering.

Agree washing up bowl best option for bum-washing - we started with an old Walls ice-cream tub then worked up to washing up bowl.
Also have one of those baths that hang inside main bath - better for bad backs; and found the foam insert thingy useful for first 6 months but not now. Mind you, did have to hack at it with scissors to make both head and leg areas "open-ended" as was too cramped for DS.

If going the washable nappy route, need a minimum of 4 nappy wraps and more babygros.

I found the babygros that pop up the front far and away the most useful, similarly for shortie babygros (aka sleepsuits) as DS still v.hot baby and they can be partially undone for extra ventilation - shame only M&S now sell them, Tesco used to but have gone to envelope-style neck all in one shorties.

pud1, you no doubt know all about this now as you will have had your baby so hope this is useful to other newby mums who find this thread.

well, to be honest the cot was a bit of a waste of money as both mine refused to sleep anywhere but in bed with me.
still, we keep it to hang towels on.

meant to add that I found bibs v. useful from about 2m on as DS dribbled for England; still useful now he is on food.
Top tip - mushed banana stains bibs/clothing really badly if bunged in washing machine BUT if cold-rinsed before putting in washing machine, no banana stains.

The main thing you've got to remember whilst buying things for your first baby is
Tesco and Mothercare will still be open after the birth!

  • that's what Daddies can help with, on errands in the first weeks if you find you have forgotten anything.
Also borrow stuff, they use things for such little amounts of time like baby bath, rocker, bouncer, playmat etc.
