Hi ladies,

As I approach the half way mark of pregnancy, I thought I’d share my experience so far. Given that I was completely clueless when I fell pregnant and was so confused as there are so many things that no one seemed to talk about and googling is hopeless if you actually want an ounce of positivity!

Those cheap dip tests were so much better than ClearBlue/First Response. I knew I was preggers with the dips a week before the expensive tests. Don’t waste money!

The implantation time was very painful - cramping on one side, and pure exhaustion. And the cramping continues (always on one side at a time) due to the preggers cyst you get (ectopic would be severe pain in your abdomen, above the where the normal cramping location is). Oh and did I mention the awful shooting pains down your back that feel like lightening...

I had no idea of the high rate of MC’s, so from week 5 to week 7, I must have checked my knicker lining several times a day. And it’s completely normal to get brown blood or even red spotting at this stage. The sooner you have a paid scan (week 6/7) the better, once you see that little heartbeat, then the risk drops hugely and you can start to secretly get excited!

Did anyone tell you that you’d be plagued by thrush? No me neither, but I’ve had it off and on throughout. Apparently sugar is the main factor as the infection thrives in a sugar body. Damn shame when all I could eat at one point was sweets! And whilst I’ve been tested and there is no reason - I’ve had green discharge off and on, sometimes smooth, other times more stringy. So then you of course panic that your plug is breaking away (which it isn’t). Then about week 12 onwards, you get a see through water-like coming out, sometimes soaking my knickers (again, normal, and no it’s not amniotic fluid!) and this goes on for weeksss.

On to morning sickness. I had hyperemesis. 6 weeks to the day I woke with sickness. And I was sick sporadically throughout the day and sometimes at night up until week 16. Make sure you buy those motion sickness wristbands and always keep biscuits by your bedside. The second I woke, I’d eat a biscuit. You’ll bring up yellow and green bile in the morning. I had a bowl in each room of the house, because it comes up quickly and violently. Oh god and the tiredness... nap time was every day for 2 hours. Hats off to the ladies who had to leave their house for work!

Then there’s the sudden sadness for no reason and the crying fits (nothing was ever wrong!). The horrible bloating and constipation, the headaches, the sore dry nipples and itchy skin... The loss of hair now all over the house.

Trying to sleep now is getting harder. Pregnancy pillow has helped, but still takes an age to flip over to the other side. Oh, and the peeing three times during the night. I’ve also reached the point where my heart is beating faster, so palpitations are now daily.

It’s wonderful to feel the little kicks, but then you have two days where the baby will be completely still!!

All in all, we all deserve medals and I’m sure there is lots more to overcome!!

Anyone else got anything to share or women further along to part wisdom??

Xx

Trying to turn over in bed with a pregnancy pillow is a full on task 😂
Also agree with the back pain, thrush, constant night time peeing and random crying fits 😆

Why does no one ever mention (well I’ve never heard it before) the chronic pelvic/groin pain and, ahem, swelling! I was quite alarmed when I looked at myself down there with a mirror a couple of weeks ago 😂 Googled it and luckily all sounds normal but it’s the first I’ve ever heard of it!

Heyha · 21/09/2020 21:09

Got to be honest OP your experience doesn't have much in common with mine other than the night visits to the toilet! I was all about nausea that turned into indigestion. Really bad indigestion, but I gather people must get it worse as the GP wouldn't give me anything (told me to raise the end of my bed, yeah that'll help me at work in the afternoon when my lunch is trying to burn it's way through my chest 😬). You sound like you've had it rough so far so fingers crossed you get to enjoy the second half a bit more!

CooperLooper · 21/09/2020 21:27

Nobody told me there would so SO MANY SKIN TAGS oh and I'd grow a pregnancy beard. Good job my husband loves me really.

SanFrancisco49er · 21/09/2020 21:28

@33muma Gosh sounds like you've had a hard time!

I've not had any of the problems you describe but I did worry a lot before scans and still worry now - currently waiting for a gestational diabetes test result as it's in my family!

Worst thing I've had so far was incredibly painful piles for a week just after 20 weeks but they subsided with anusol cream and wipes.

Acid reflux can be bad if I eat tomatoey things.

Totally used to sleeping on my side now although I do miss sleeping on my back a bit.

Hope you have an easier ride for the rest of your pregnancy!

I'm sure we've had all different doses, reassuring to hear that it's not a walk in the park for any of us!! :) x

Skin tags yes!! Oh how I can't wait for them to disappear.. and I wish I only went to the toilet 3 times in the night, I go 4/5 times before I can even get to sleep (nothing ever really there) and then at least 4 during the night also.. 29 weeks here and whilst I don't want to wish my pregnancy away I totally can't wait to have my body back either 🙊 love threads like this as it makes it all feel normal xx

JulieHanlon12 · 22/09/2020 02:30

I'm coming on 27 weeks and I must admit I would hardly know I was pregnant apart from the peeing and my growing tummy! I had zero symptoms throughout, no nausea or sickness, no cravings or extreme tiredness. I still now don't feel much different from usual! (long may it Continue) Just goes to show everyone is different and not all symptoms are the same for everyone. This was a massive surprise for us so I think the wee one is giving me an easy ride to let me get over the shock 🤣x

Viletta · 22/09/2020 02:42

@JulieHanlon12 I'm same as you in the lucky boat week 38 now!
I think some of it is mindset, surely I had symptoms I could focus on if I wanted to like having to go to the loo 3 times a night but I'm so used to it now I don't even think of it.

JulieHanlon12 · 22/09/2020 06:28

@Viletta yeah the toilet thing is annoying as my bathroom is downstairs so that's going to be fun in a few weeks time but it'll keep me fit 😜 It's just reassuring to know that you don't need to have all these symptoms, it was really worrying for me in the early days as I kept reading about other people and how ill they were and kept thinking something must be wrong, my midwife said to remember that pregnancy isn't an illness and the majority of women are fairly well, I was proper paranoid as I was so symptom free. Touch wood baby is perfect, just must be good genes or good luck, whatever it is I'll take it!!

Yep. Every pregnamcy is different so when you're pregnamt next time and think you know what to expect, and it will then not be the same thing so you have to discover ehat works for you all over again.

33muma · 22/09/2020 07:48

@Viletta great! I'll bear that in mind, that half of it is due to mindset 😂

@lc86 oh I've not had skin tags, but I think I'm following in your path for more night time loo runs! Good luck with it! X

Wow it sounds like you’ve had a really tough time OP @33muma hopefully the rest of your pregnancy is easier. My experience is quite different to yours - although I get the checking the knickers thing.
Everyone’s experience is different, it’s important to not that red spitting is NOT normal - while it happens and many pregnancies are fine - I had some but there was a reason for it - it’s not normal and should be check out immediately.
Hoping the second half is smoother for you!

Cindy974 · 22/09/2020 08:53

34 weeks here, my first and second trimester were fine, bits of nausea the usual but I had it really good compared to some. Third trimester not so fine! Ive come out in PUPPP rashes everywhere, rash in between my legs where the air can’t get to, pelvic, hip and back pain, dizziness, headaches and lots of round ligament pain when I set off for a walk too quick, leaky boobs and body aches. I have a physical job and work 37 hours a week, was planning on working till 38 weeks but I definitely don't think that will be happening now.

33muma · 22/09/2020 10:45

@Cindy974 oh you poor thing!! At least you're on the final hurdle :) not long now!

UTIs!!! I've had 4 and am now on permanent antibiotics 😭 I was prone before pregnancy but not as bad as this. Also had thrush twice 😕
Otherwise feeling OK-ish now (32 weeks) apart from draining fatigue some days and waddling due to hip and back pain.
Did have nausea and vomiting from weeks 4 to 20 and could barely leave the sofa, breathlessness throughout, headaches, migraines, only able to sleep part of the night.
Having said all that, I will miss feeling little one bounce and jump around inside ❤️

Varicose veins. I had legs to rival Cyd Charisse's. You'd NEVER believe me if you saw them now (age 48, and an unkind 48 at that. 3 kids, 4 deliveries, 1 stillbirth, 6 pregnancies total, swings and bloody roundabouts but it's worth it all to have the families we're blessed with).

I kept Gaviscon by my bedside table like a proper junkie! I used to just neck it. I'm amazed my kids didn't come out magenta. DH used to follow me up the stairs with his hands kind of loosely cupping my backside and he'd say, "I'm just keeping it from falling out." I still giggle when I think about it. We were always so nervous. It just wasn't straight-forward bliss for us. We worried a great, great deal.
