Hi all, I have a ten year gap so the rules have changed. What is the thing about covering your nice breathable material mattress in a waterproof cover? Does that not make it unsafe of the baby flips over and can't breathe through it? I am so confused!

I am getting a 2nd hand cot from my friend and she has a mattress which was only used a few times at her mum's house. So I know where it has been and who has used it etc. Can I use it? Do you need specialised waterproof covers? Help!

I have these for my DTs:

www.amazon.co.uk/Waterproof-Mattress-Protector-70x140cm-Toddler/dp/B075KLBRP7/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=dreamzie+mattress+protector+cot&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1600595957&sr=8-3

They’ve been absolutely brilliant. They wash well, are breathable and have not leaked at all through some rather unpleasant extraordinary baby and toddler explosions. They’re also go through the tumble dryer no problem.

I think the guidelines are to buy a new mattress. Even though you know the history of the mattress, I’d buy a new one to be on the safe side if you can afford it.

I was worrying about this this week too.
The lullaby trust recommend a waterproof mattress or cover though. So I've bought some. There will have been lots of research into it.
Guessing the risk of it not being so breathable is minimised by baby sleeping on their back and there's a risk of bodily fluids not getting cleaned off the mattress properly without one.

Hello..I think the recommendation is to get a new mattress. I've also got a few waterproof mattress protector that I plan to use with my snuzpod
