I know I'm my own worst enemy here...but I had a Doppler given to me from a friend and thought it give it ago. Couldn't hear anything until 9 weeks 5 days and found a lovely fast little heartbeat Smile but then skip forward to today at 10 weeks and i can no longer find it...worrying myself now that somethings happened of course. Can anyone reassure me that it's ok and that they have had the same for it to be found again?

I would never buy one and even midwives are hesitant to use them untill 16 weeks as they are so hard to find.
I'd stop using it it's just going to make you anxious

Twizbe · 18/09/2020 17:33

Throw it away!

Home dopplers are dangerous. They give both false worry and false reassurance. Your midwife won't search for a heartbeat until at least 16 weeks. Before that baby is tiny and it's easy to miss it.

Thank I know I need to bin it. I crumbled at temptation and set myself up for this.

This is exactly why home Dopplers aren’t advised! Just bin it OP!

It’s really early for you to consistently find a heartbeat - midwives don’t check until 16 weeks. At this stage a Doppler will just give you false worry. And then later in pregnancy, it may give you false reassurance if you think you’ve picked up a heartbeat when it’s actually just your own.

My midwife really suggested both times i was pregnant not to get one. It sounds like a lovely idea but at the end of the day you dont know what your doing and it can cause so much anxiety. My mum when pregnant with my sister went to her midwife appointment and they couldn't find her heartbeat with it, she then went to hospital and have a proper scan and she was fine. They can be moving or lying awkwardly which makes it hard to find :) try not to use it again as I think it causes more harm than good!

As previous posters say op, get rid! And there's no way of knowing that what u found last time was the heartbeat anyway.

Disappointedkoala · 18/09/2020 18:15

Put it in the bin. I had a 3rd year student midwife use one on me at 28 weeks recently and she struggled to find the heartbeat even then!

BeMorePacific · 18/09/2020 18:20

It’s very unlikely you heard the heartbeat at 9weeks. You can hear a lot of different sounds when listening in.
I was 22 weeks before I heard the heartbeat. Take care x

FelicityPike · 18/09/2020 18:24

Put it in the bin.

newgirl14 · 18/09/2020 18:56

Thanks all. I can confirm it's gone. I've realised how stupid i was for setting myself up for this!

Well done op Smile

sarahc336 · 18/09/2020 20:28

Oh no never use one yourself especially at 10 weeks. Most midwives now refuse to use them before25 weeks as the heart beat can be hard to find on one before this sonic your doing it at 10'weeks no wonder you can't locate it. The baby is so small it could be round by your back and therefore hard to pick joints heart beat. Personally I'd get rid of it Confused x

Laanie · 18/09/2020 20:33

Not really understanding the hate here, I got one and love it. It can be a bit of a search but with gel I've always found it eventually

sarahc336 · 18/09/2020 20:55

@Laanie it's because a heart beat is hard to find a lot of the time if you have a placenta at the front or a baby that likes to lay at the back of your womb and then this causes a lot of stress. Sounds like you've had a good experience but I've seen lots of posts on here of women panicking when actually they're babybwas fine but they just couldn't locate the heart beat x

Blessing20 · 18/09/2020 20:56

I have one. I am 14 weeks, yes I agree it's bit tricky you have to find baby position. It takes a little time but I was able to find and hear the heart beat. I watched YouTube videos before trying it for tips and tricks to use it, that helped.

33muma · 19/09/2020 08:27

The placentas beat sounds the same as the baby's heartbeat, so at that early stage you're probably hearing the placenta. Even experienced midwives would struggle that early.
Get rid of it - there's a reason why they want to ban them!!
