Private Maternity Care Questions

Hello all,

I'm currently looking into private maternity care and delivery at St Thomas hospital, Westminster Suite. Keen on keeping costs in check, I wanted to ask what would happen if baby had to be kept in hospital in a neonatal unit or if I needed more care, would it be possible to transfer back to NHS care? I'm praying that all will be fine and we won't have any problems but also keen to avoid the 1k/ day charges if something does happens. Are there any other hidden costs to look out for? Keen to hear from moms who have experience with private maternity care! Thank you'

PS: I know NHS care is great, but my insurance is paying up to a certain amount so I'm exploring the private option. Smile

You don’t need to caveat that NHS is great. It’s ok, it’s not generally brilliant for maternity and it ok to say that. On answer to your question your baby will be an NHS patient and there would be no neonatal costs. The only exception to this would be if you gave birth at the Portland and even then you’d possibly be moved to UCH as an NHS patient. You would need to check your own insurance as to how much they would cover for your own care but it’s likely you would also be moved to NHS if you needed significant care.

@Sophoa thank you so much for your reply. Haha I didn't want to get into a discussion of NHS vs private, hence the side note.
