What to drink in pregnancy

Hi All!
I'm 14 weeks and since being pregnant I've really gone off my usual cups of hot water, juice and squash things. Missing tea a lot!
Does anyone have any tips for good drinks to have in whilst pregnant?
Don't want to drink too much fruit juice as very sugary.
Thanks :-)

drink decaff tea?

EmzG20 · 16/09/2020 12:58

Decaf tea?
I drink a lot of sparkling water that's fruit flavoured

You can drink tea. It doesn't have to be decaf. There isn't a huge amount of caffeine in tea.

If you were a big coffee drinker, you might want to cut back or switch to decaf.

I continued drinking Diet Coke throughout pregnancy, no harm done.

For sensible information and advice about what you can eat and drink in pregnancy, "Expecting Better" by Emily Oster is a very good book.

CoalCraft · 16/09/2020 13:08

iirc up to 200 mg caffeine a day is fine. A cup of tea has ~75 mg, so you can have two cups a day and still have some wiggle room. Otherwise, yeah, decaf tea.

Personally I'm the opposite to you; I've gone right off tea and instead want water, squash (hot squash is yum), juice and coke (incidentally, a can of coke has ~40 mg caffeine, so one or two a day is fine).

Pinktruffle · 16/09/2020 13:13

I'm loving the hot squash too! I was only ever a tea or water drinker and pregnancy has made me a huge fan of squash a fruit juices. I'm even having the odd bit of coke here and there.

Another favourite is half a glass of pineapple juice topped up with half a glass of no sugar 7 up/Sprite/Lemonade. Incredibly refreshing, and was brilliant during the little heat wave we had.

Iheardit · 16/09/2020 13:13

I really like ice cold lemonade (lots of ice which I crunch On after)

Mochiface · 16/09/2020 13:16

Hi @excitedanxietyyorkshire ,

I drank hot milk, booked hot water, occasional honey warm water or lemon water, or sugar free squash with sparkling water.

MichelleOR84 · 16/09/2020 13:18

I’m obsessed with decaf tea !!!

I’m also obsessed with smoothies , but in particular: 1 banana , half a cup Greek yogurt , 1 cup ice and 1 tbl spoon honey .

And ice cold water !!!!!

Disappointedkoala · 16/09/2020 13:27

Decaf tea & coffee
Squash
Juice
Alcohol free beer & fizz
Water
Occasional can of fizzy drink when I fancy one

Exactly what I drank before except without the buckets of caffeine and alcohol!

Frazzlerock · 16/09/2020 13:30

I drink decaf coffee (proper not instant), water, orange juice and milk.

I'm quite happy with that as I usually just drink water and coffee anyway

Hrcg87 · 16/09/2020 13:33

The only things i could drink was diet lemonade and lime and soda, on doing some research theres something in fizzy drinks that can help with nausea. 19 weeks now and can only just stomach water again.

PatricksRum · 16/09/2020 13:46

Drink your tea!

I drink decaf tea and squash, water when I can be bothered. I have 1 normal cup of tea in the morning and then decaf, I can’t really tell the difference now. In the early days I drank ginger tea to stop me feeling sick, I didn’t drink it for pleasure or the taste though!

I’m yet to find a replacement for alcohol that I like, I just drink lemonade out a gin glass at home to pretend.

Whatinthename20 · 16/09/2020 15:17

Lime and soda has been my go-to

Superscientist · 16/09/2020 15:35

Rooibos tea, decaff tea/coffee, hot chocolate, fancy fruit cordial - elderflower, raspberry & lemon, mint and cucumber etc.

When I was struggling with pregnancy sickness I drank fizzy drinks and hot water and honey.

Oneandabean · 16/09/2020 16:08

You can have 2 cups of tea of coffee a day, avoid decaf as I was told it Is actually worse and can cause miscarriage. Herbal teas you can also have a couple of cups a day but avoid anything with chickory root, liquorice root or blackberry leaves.
Barley squash is good for you as long as you don’t overdo it as it’s high sugar.

rorosemary · 16/09/2020 16:16

Flavour your water with cucumber, or a few drops of lemon or orange or mint leaves or lemon verbena. Best if you make a jug and let it stand (in the fridge) for a while to strengthen the flavour.

Saoirse22 · 16/09/2020 16:26

Drink what you body is telling you to drink. Unless you have issues with i.e. diabetes and your diet is balanced, sugars from natural, cold pressed juices really shouldn't be an issue. There are worse things than natural fruit sugar. Just opt for 100% pure juice and not concentrate and don't resort to sodas and other artificially sweetened drinks and you'll likely be fine.

I usually drink more herbal tea than black or green anyway so I expected I won't have an issue with too much caffeine in pregnancy. But... I didn't count with tea aversion! I expected food aversions, but tea aversion came as a shock to me Shock

Any sort of tea made me terribly nauseous, regardless of flavour. Must be something about warm water, don't know, but I was totally unable to drink any tea (including ginger - even that caused the nausea!) for about 6 months. Natural juices were an absolute life saver and I went through cycles of intensely craving different flavours, i.e. for 2-3 weeks in a row I'd crave apple juice like crazy, then I'd start a cycle of not being attracted to apple juice at all and craving orange with bits only. I'd get quite upset if my husband brought home the "wrong" juice 😂

dementedpixie · 16/09/2020 16:57

www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/pregnancy/should-i-limit-caffeine-during-pregnancy/ NHS suggests decaff coffee/tea so it can't be that harmful to a pregnancy

Joeyandpacey · 16/09/2020 17:06

I’m having a decaf coffee and then I’m obsessed with chilled sparkling water from a glass bottle. It’s an expensive habit. If I don’t have that I have chilled tap water with a slice of lemon.

H8624 · 16/09/2020 18:29

I have 1 tea a day, water/squash and the odd caffeine free Diet Coke or J20 for variety!

If you like fizzy drinks most other than coke don't have caffeine so 7 up/lemonade/fizzy orange etc!
