4D Scan worries - should I call my MW?

Looking for some advice or reassurance if possible please...

I had a private scan last week at 16 weeks and we were able to see bubs in 4D and received a video of them which was great. However I've watched it about 100 times and it appears that baby is wearing the cord like a scarf around their shoulders. Is this anything to worry about at all? And if so, should I phone the MW? I don't want to be an over cautious mum worrying about anything and everything but my brother was born with the cord wrapped around his next twice so it's worrying me a little. I mean he is healthy and fine but it doesn't settle my worry at all.

I feel if I phone the MW I'll be coming across dramatic and if I don't and something happens I'll forever regret not phoning. 😥

Give them a call. It will make you feel better.

Fizzingsherbert · 14/09/2020 12:28

As previous poster says, give them a call. Everything is probably fine but it's always best to check if you have any concerns during pregnancy. My maternity ward were always very clear that no concern is too little and to never feel embarrassed about raising one.

I would have thought that at this stage baby is still moving around so much that things are changing constantly. Will you be having a 20 week anomaly scan? They'll be able to see then.

As far as I know the only risk is during delivery. No harm will come to them in utero if the cord is around them, and there's ages for this to change before your baby arrives.

Thank for replying so quickly!! I really appreciate that.

I have a 20 week scan booked in four weeks time but I would hate to wait and something untoward has happened since. I know I'm probably being really dramatic but it's just such a panic that's playing on my mind.

That's reassuring that you'd all call the MW. I might give her a call today even to put my mind at rest.

Thank you!!

In the loveliest way, what could your midwife do to make the situation any different if you did call her? At 16 weeks the baby is so tiny still they constantly move and probably isn’t in that position anymore. With NHS scans the sonographers don’t comment if the cord is round the baby’s neck or across the baby as it’s medically irrelevant and can change at any moment, even at term lots of babies are born with the cord round their necks. I really wouldn’t give it a second thought, I understand your anxiety but there is nothing your midwife can do or say, I really do think private scans often cause more anxiety than reassurance sometimes

@thetangleteaser no I totally get what you mean. If I hadn't seen the 4D image I wouldn't be panicking at all. They've probably had it round their shoulders many a times over the last few weeks but seeing it on video and in life it's just a worry.

I've left the MW a voicemail just asking if she could call me as I have a query to ask. I know everything will be find from your and the below comments but just for that reassurance it's a worthwhile chat I think.

Did the person carrying out your private scan comment on it or say anything about it? I’ve had 3 x private scans (early, gender & 4D) during my pregnancy & the person carrying them out has always went into detail about everything.

AlviesMam · 14/09/2020 19:45

My 4d scan video showed my baby stuffing her cord in her mouth. They are moving none stop I wouldn't worry but to make yourself at ease ask for advice. I asked my sonographer if it was normal when she had a mouthful of cord lol x

Fallowdeerhunter · 14/09/2020 19:57

It’s not dangerous for a baby to have the cord around their neck at birth. About 25% of babies do. They don’t breathe air until they’re out....

Fallowdeerhunter · 14/09/2020 19:58

My daughter had it 3 times, they just unwrap it when baby comes out

UsernameNotValid · 14/09/2020 20:05

@Fallowdeerhunter it can be dangerous during delivery, my labour failed to progress because DS' cord was wrapped so tightly round his neck (twice) he couldn't move down which resulted in his heart rate plummeting with every contraction and an emergency section to save him!

BUT all cases are different, I was born with my cord around my neck twice too which went unnoticed until they had to unwrap it.

@FD3110 try not to stress about it. At this stage they'll be wriggling about with plenty of space so will probably tangle/untangle/learn to skip a lot in the next few months. Congratulations on your pregnancy 💐

Fallowdeerhunter · 15/09/2020 10:36

@UsernameNotValid that is a very very rare thing to happen so probably not worth worrying someone about.

Anyway op here’s a link to some proper info - as you can see cord is round neck in around a third of deliveries and causes no issues in almost all circumstances

FD3110 · 15/09/2020 11:24

Thank you everyone for commenting and for your advice.

The MW called and echoed that they have a lot of room to move around right now and that they aren't at any any immediate risk. And she said in the nicest way, even if there was a risk, there is little they could do at this stage (I'm 17 weeks).

I do feel better that I've spoken to her but I'm just going to put it to the back of my mind. My next scan is in 4 weeks so I'll chat with the sonographer then to see if bubs is still using my cord as a fashion accessory. ❤️
