Is it unreasonable to take time off work for nausea?

Hello, I'm very new to MN.

I'm in the first trimester with my first pregnancy and I have never felt so physically ill in my life, I knew I would feel off but this is something way worse than I could've imagined!

I am disabled by nausea and dry wretching from about 6am to 6pm. Laying in bed in silence and sipping squash and the occasional bite of bread and butter provides limited relief. I feel dizzy and my eyes go blurry if I stand up. I haven't managed to wash my hair in over a week because I cant stand in the shower. BUT I'm only actually vomiting about once a day.

Is nausea without vomiting reason enough to take time off work? Feel like a bit of an idiot taking time off for that. I work in a public facing role and spend most of my day talking which atm just makes me feel worse! Any opinions?

Even if it’s not technically HG, nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is a wide spectrum and you can absolutely still have severe nausea which impacts on your life. The Pregnancy Sickness Support website and helpline has a lot of good info.

So sorry to hear how bad you have been feeling.

I’m 6+4 and since about 5+2 I’ve hardly been able to eat a thing. Gagging at the thought of certain foods and nausea 24/7.
However mostly every night since, I’ve had either hot dogs(I know random) or Burger King or McDonald’s. I cannot stomach anything else food wise. Maybe some toast.
I know it’s not healthy in the slightest but I reason with myself that my body would rather be getting something than nothing.
If you are craving a McDonald’s go for it! Just anything to get some energy in yourself, you can make up for the lack of healthiness later on.

Good luck!

Another one suffering from HG here. Are you sure you dont have it? In my first HG pregnancy I wasnt physically sick until around 11ish weeks but the nausea was horrendous and I was dry heaving 30+ times a day. I spent most of that pregnancy, and this one signed off.

Agree with a pp the nausea is a million times worse than being sick. I am on 4 different anti emetics just to function and have been for 7 months, the nausea doesnt go away even with those.

Definitely speak to GP and definitely get signed off. Being active makes it so much worse.

4am and I'm out of bed forcing down dry crackers. Really didn't think it could get any worse, could cry. Maybe it is HG.

I have been given cyclizine. And I'm trying working from home (only possible for 3/5 days). Fingers crossed!

All PPs going through this, I hope things improve as quickly as possible for you. Its nice to know I'm not alone.

With my first pregnancy I had nausea without vomiting - sometimes think it's worth as at least throwing up would offer some relief. I felt awful, exhausted and dizzy - found it very hard to stand for more than a couple of seconds. Now 6 weeks pregnant with #2 and very grateful I can work from home, from bed if needs be, and don't have to travel.

It's awful and if you need help definitely talk to a GP. Also, although lots of people don't tell anyone until 12 weeks when the risks diminish you can tell work earlier. I told my boss at 8 weeks because we had a series of evening events around Christmas and I just couldn't cope.
