Maternity Hospitals - Whipps Cross, The Royal London or Homerton??

Hi,
I am at the stage in my pregnancy when I have to start thinking of which hospital I want to go to. I am moving to the Wanstead area soon and think the above 3 are my choices, unfortunately I'm leaving behind UCLH :-(
At the moment due to Covid no tours are happening. I would love to hear any recent feedback as in the past I have heard mixed reviews about each hospital. I have also read Whipps cross was due to have a big revamp especially the maternity unit?
Thanks

Hi there. I live close by to Wanstead, and had my first at Whipps 2 years ago. I'm about to have my second there. It was totally fine, had a planned section. The section went really well, the recovery was good. They have done a revamp and i visited the new antenatal clinic this week, it was nice - better than hommerton, which I have also been to with a family member.

I've seen that the birthing suite has reopened, and it looks like there's a huge improvement. Bonus points also that there's a new m and s food right next to maternity.

Negatives, the prenatal care is ok but, it can be hard to reach the right person for making appts etc. But it wasn't that bad first time around, so I suppose it's covid's fault!

I know a lot of people who've had at Whipps with no issues.

But also hommerton meant to be good, and people I know who have used it were happy. I visited above family member there straight after birth and it all seemed well
Managed etc. Massive reluctance to give stronger pain meds, which was very annoying.

Whipps is super close for you if you are Wanstead. Though the drive to hommerton isn't too bad, 30 mins or so.

Whipps have posted some pics of the new birthing centre on Twitter, looks fab. All of it was due to be finished by November. They’ve also really improved in the latest CQC to good in all sections.

I was just researching the same thing (super early, so being keen!). Whipps is my nearest but I’d heard people saying go to Homerton instead.
However it seems there have been lots of improvements at Whipps recently, and it would be so much easier and closer for appointments etc...going to do a bit more research.
Good luck to you @Harrimara whatever you decide

Also parking at Homerton is a total nightmare! You can always start at one and move if you really do get bad vibes

Lucky you moving to Wanstead, it’s lovely!
Whips cross have just opened brand new birthing centre a few weeks ago, and it’s an easy location to reach by car or public transport. I have friends who have given birth at Homerton too and had good experiences, I would choose whichever location is best and least stressful for you to go to :-)

I live 5 mins from Whipps so registered there when I found out I was pregnant. I sent the form off and got no response. Followed up with an email and got no response. Called the maternity number on 4 different occasions and no one every picked up... so I gave up and referred at Homerton (20 mins from me) and have had a great experience so far. Really responsive and a lovely midwife. I’m only 10 weeks so no real experience yet but I have been well and truly put off the ‘care’ at Whipps regardless of upgrades and proximity to my flat.

@LuckyFlash that’s a shame, I’ve had really speedy replies from the email address!

Harrimara · 12/09/2020 16:30

Thank you to all you lovely ladies for your replies regarding my question.
At the moment Homerton is top but mainly due to a close friend having her kids there but it’s good to know Whipps isn’t as bad as I have heard and can always change if I’m not happy.
I’m 10wks+2 days and hope I can get signed up there this week, but I’m not moving till the 2nd Oct 😕
Thanks again

Hi OP, I live in South Woodford and was referred to Whipps by my GP when I found out I was pregnant in February. To be honest I was really unhappy and ended up changing to Homerton in August at around 26 weeks which wasn't ideal. Saying that I'm now due to give birth next month and have no regrets, I've found the Homerton staff so much nicer and more efficient, at Whipps they were really rude and kept missing appointments, when the appointments went ahead they also always ran really late. Hope this is helpful. Good luck with your move and your pregnancy x

Which email did you use? It’s proving difficult to get registered! Thank you
