I am 39 & 3, so extremely constipated it's unbearable. My morning sickness has never ended causing me to lose a whopping 21kg during this pregnancy therefore unable to try foods to help me go like fruit etc. I did try senna last week and spent the day so unwell and in pain.

Does anyone have any suggestions or words or wisdom. Seems like such a small thing but this week I am struggling to manage.

Have you spoken to your mw?
My advice would be lactose and as much water as you can stomach.
Have my full sympathy though as I also lost weight during pregnancy due to excessive vomiting.

FriedasCarLoad · 05/09/2020 19:02

I don't have advice, other than repeating what the PP said about drinking lots of water and speaking to your midwife.

But don't dismiss it as a small thing. Constipation is so uncomfortable, especially in pregnancy. It's worth getting medical help, and it's OK to feel really fed up.

Movicol is amazing stuff. You can buy it over the counter.

Lockdownseperation · 05/09/2020 19:03

You need some lactose to soften your poo. I think you will need to a GP to prescribe it.

AuditAngel · 05/09/2020 19:09

People are saying lactose, but i think they mean Lactulose, very gentle, ask GP for it,

Rina66 · 05/09/2020 19:21

If you can stand it, strong black coffee or kiwi fruit (it’s the pips apparently).
Also use a stool to raise your knees when you’re on the loo, it puts you into a more squatting position, this opens/straightens everything out and helps you to evacuate more easily 😂 Google squatty potty, it’s a thing!

Chia seeds and tinned prunes! I tried everything and those are the only two things that have kept me regular. I have porridge with oat milk (dairy bungs me up more) with 3 spoonfuls of chia seeds and 6 prunes on every morn and it’s kept me much more regular.

Hopefully you should be able to stomach that with sickness too as it’s quite plain, chia seeds taste of nothing!

Arrowcat · 05/09/2020 19:27

Docusate.
Lactulose and movicol are impossible to swallow if you are sick.
Also if youve been sick throughout why haven't you been on any anti sickness meds? (Cyclizine / ondansetron?)
Bit late now but knowledge for the future.
Good luck over the coming weeks. Xx

Queenfreak · 05/09/2020 19:27

Yes as PP said, I meant lactulose, autocorrect changed it! You can buy over the counter

YouBringLightInToADarkPlace · 05/09/2020 19:27

I can highly recommend a Movicol, fibogel and prune juice cocktail twice a day.
Tastes revolting but bloody works! 💥

I am on 3 lots of anti sickness but now under a dietitian and on ensure 1.5 shakes but even those I'm really not managing anymore.

Thanks everyone I will look into the lactulose etc with the gp as that seems a popular option. I just hope things return to normal when the little fella is out so I can regain some strength 😩

Fresh orange juice -especially the one with the bits in. Good luck

Redcliffe14 · 05/09/2020 20:00

Another vote for chia seeds! They have loads of fibre in a tiny amount and are completely tasteless! I sprinkle some on strawberries and have them like that!

Redcliffe14 · 05/09/2020 20:01

You could add the chia seeds to your ensure shakes even and down them that way, you dont need to leave them to soak or anything

Emelene · 05/09/2020 20:14

I'm pregnant and using lactulose too,
Can buy over the counter. It's very sweet and sticky like syrup, but you don't need much and I find it works. Smile

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 05/09/2020 20:32

If you’re on Ondansteron, it’s likely that.

Regularly Movicol was a GAME CHANGER for me. It’s amazing. Take the max dose for the first few days to sort yourself out then a regular dose every day to prevent it happening again.

It’s an over the counter medication although prescription only in pregnancy. It’s the only thing that’s works for me and I’ve tried everything, even suppositories.
