When did you stop taking Cyclogest?

I am pregnant (9+2) following a miscarriage earlier this year. My GP has been very understanding and put me on Cyclogest from the start of this pregnancy as I had some early bleeding last time and there is some evidence it may help. However he admitted he doesn’t know a lot about it and asked me how long I should take it for! I thought 12 weeks based on what I’ve read but does anyone have any experience of being prescribed it by someone who knows more about when it’s appropriate to come off it?

I'm pretty sure it's 12 weeks!
I'm taking progesterone as I had IVF and that stops at 12 weeks too

After my 12 week scan in my last pregnancy

Poppy10121 · 05/09/2020 19:56

Thank you both! I’ve not got my scan until 13 weeks so might see if I can carry on with it until then

I’ve had recurrent miscarriages and my consultant prescribed it until 16 weeks, everybody has a different view on it but I’d definitely ask your GP to check with a consultant. Hope it all goes well x

RuthieMc · 05/09/2020 20:08

Oh and just for further info my consultant prescribed it until 16 weeks as that’s when the placenta takes over hormone production apparently, which my pregnancy app did pop up with last week x

Poppy10121 · 05/09/2020 22:02

Thanks @RuthieMc maybe I will ask the GP to see if he can find out anything else then! He literally just said he knew of a study from Miscarriage Association suggesting it could help and he understood that I would want to try anything I could. But I realise that most people are prescribed it by a specialist/recurrent miscarriage clinic whereas he doesn’t have much experience of it. Touch wood I haven’t had bleeding this time so hopefully it is working and I am afraid of coming off it too soon.

I did ivf so used them until 12-13 week it doesn’t hurt t stay on them a little longer but can be devastating if stopped too soon
After 12 weeks placenta takes over and makes progesterone

SugarSW7 · 06/09/2020 03:13

If its from the study from the Miscarriage Association, its until 16 weeks. 800 my split into two doses a day. But he can check the study out or with a consultant.
Good luck!

Thank you @SugarSW7 that’s really helpful 😘

I got it from a fertility clinic and they said take until 12 weeks. I have slightly more doses than that in the box though so considering tapering it off from 12 weeks going down from 2 X pessary a day to 1 to use them up

theresaplaceforus · 06/09/2020 07:39

Yes take it until 12 weeks - I remember my scan was at 12+5 and I asked if I should take it until the scan and I was told no take it literally until the day that you are 12 weeks but if unsure with your dates you might as well carry on x

The placenta takes over the progesterone production at 12 weeks hence why most clinics stop the cyclogest at 12 weeks.
However, im under the recurrent miscarriage clinic and they keep you on it until 16 weeks (not sure of the reasons).

I think that given the fact you havent got a history of recurrent miscarriage, stopping after your 12 week scan will be fine.

I'm also on it because of the recurrent miscarriage clinic. I'm currently approaching 15 weeks and will stop at 16 when I've seen my consultant. The study says it decided to go until 16 weeks but doesn't say why...

Thank you @SugarSW7 it’s interesting reading! I think I’ll see how things go at my scan and if I can get any advice from the midwife too.

Good luck to all of you ❤️

Hi everyone, I reaslise this is an older post but hoping someone can help. I've just undergone IVF and have my positive result! I am thrilled. However, my clinic are advising stopping Cyclogest straight away now that I'm positive. I'm only one week after transfer! I am so anxious about this but when I call/email to ask why this is they just say it's fine and I have no real understanding of why.

Everything I am reading says take Cyclogest for first 10+ weeks. I am worried!!

Wideeyed66 · 03/04/2024 22:41

Hey there @Clarabelle10 I’d ask for a second opinion in your clinic, especially if you’re paying! , I’m a few rounds in of ivf and have always been told if positive to keep going til 12 weeks. Congrats on your BFP xx
