Has anyone been induced because they were just sick of waiting....

... and did you regret it?

My original due date was 5th Oct, was then reverted to the 9th (which was original date by LMP) so technically only 8 days late but was only told this, this week so have been thinking "could be today" for nearly 2 weeks now.

Have to see doc on Tuesday and suspect they will want to induce sooner rather than later. A huge part of me wants to hang on for the birth I had planned (in a birth centre) but there is a niggling bit of me that just wants to opt out of the waiting game as I think "ah sod it, 24 hours later, it won't matter".... or will it?

Personally I would want to avoid being induced if at all possible, though I know how those last few weeks can feel. Just take solace in the fact that you are very unlikely to have a November baby!

ladymuck · 17/10/2004 20:42

And there are always the homemade versions - curry, pineapple, walking, sex, using pig semen to persuade the cervix to get ready...

blossomhill · 17/10/2004 20:43

pig semen - yuk!

ladymuck · 17/10/2004 20:47

Apparently that is what the prostaglandin gel is derived from...

Oh Beansprout, I so feel for you!! It is a really hard decision. I was induced for my second as I had SPD and was struggling with my 2yr dd due to lack of mobiliyt, let alone the pain...I was really lucky the 2nd induction worked and 50 min after my waters broke out popped ds!!! Just be aware of one thing, induction normally results in a faster labour and that can mean you have to have interventions such as epidural!!!! My first labour was difficult and due to it going on for 25hrs and baby getting stuck I gave birth in theatre, with heavy epidural and vontouse (not sure you spell it like that) so all my dreams of natural birth and being in control went out the window and I am sure contributed to my lack of confidence in the first few months. If u want a more natural birth dont loose sight of that, it stays with you. Try and make the experience as positive as u can, ie have control and choice. Have u tried to bring labour on, I am sure mums can ngive you many ways to try... Good luck.

Having been induced at 38 weeks due to high blood pressure I know a little how you feel - even at that stage I was desperate to get the baby out! 2nd baby was 5 days over so not that long but I'm glad she wasn't induced as the labour was so very much easier (cannot emphasise this enough!).
For the sake of what might only be a few days I would wait. Your baby will come out a lot easier when s/he is ready to!!!
Good luck!

Poor you, Sue! So long as you are being monitored by a midwife and feel regular movements you are probably fine waiting. I should have added that my induction ended in an emergency c-section.
Sorry - really don't want to worry anyone about to be induced! I just wouldn't recommend going for it out of frustration.

acer · 17/10/2004 21:06

Not nice, had to be beacause my baby before was stillborn and apparently I am more at risk if I wait until 40 weeks, so I had my ds at 38.

Petesmum · 17/10/2004 21:10

I had gestational diabeties (spelling?) so was induced on my actual due date. I was so relieved because I was getting tried of being pregnant and was desperate to hold my baby and not waste any of my maternity leave (patience is not one of my strong points!)

DS was born 4.5 hours from them breaking my waters - had got to 2cm without knowing it on my own. However from the moment my waters broke I went from feeling nothing to crawling the walls in minutes. Sorry I don't want to put you off or worry you but my midwife did admit afterwards that induced labours were faster & more intense (wish someone had pointed that out before hand, I might have found a little more patience & waited!)

I often wonder whether I'd have given in and had an epidural if I'd had a natural labour where the intensity gradually increases. If I ever have another I won't be in such a hurry.

jenkel · 17/10/2004 21:19

I've had one induced labour and one natural labour and the induced one was a lot more painful. I literally had no pains/contractions etc and then within minutes it seems like somebody had turned the dial up to high. The trouble with being induced is that you dont have the slow build up so its doesnt give your body chance to adjust. Howver, saying that a times being induced can be the best thing medically. I wouldnt push to be induced but if it had to happen it has to happen.

Hulababy · 17/10/2004 21:35

I was induced at 12 days OD due to post dates, and I have to say I would never allow myself to go through it again It didn't work and it was very very painful.

I had 3 lots of the gel. First two did nothing but give me a few cramps. They seem to dry everything up too so second and third ones were much more uncomfortable and hurt a lot when applied. Third one kicked in kind of overnight. I had horrid pains - not contractiosn, as there were no troughs to the pain. I couldn't walk or move, and was physically sick continously. I went down to labout ward to have pethidine, and was told I was 1cm dilated. Hours later I got to 2/3cm dilated despite having the syntocin drip, and them attempting to break my waters (which they didn't manage fully either). Had epidural for the pain which helped a lot. But no further progress. In the end - on the 3rd night I had a wonderful CS experience and DD was born safe and healthy.

Gos...sorry, wrote loads. I don't mean to worry/scare anyone with it all. Just not a great experience for me at all But the end result was lovely

coppertop · 17/10/2004 21:46

I was induced twice. The first time I was a week overdue and had been experiencing bp problems on and off. It took 40 long hours of labour before ds1 was born. The second time was at 38 weeks because ds2 was a big baby and the consultant wanted to avoid a c/s. This time it was only 6 hours but as the ward was so understaffed there was a long delay before I could get an epidural. The contractions were very fast and strong and extremely painful. If the pain relief had been available earlier then I would have been fairly happy with the whole procedure. Then again, I don't have an experience of natural labour to compare it to.

zaphod · 17/10/2004 22:06

I had four natural labours and was induced the last time when I was 11 days overdue{hospital policy}. TBH there was no difference. The gel was inserted and a couple of hours later labour began, nice and gently, and things proceeded just like they had the other times. And I really beat myself up about being induced, all for nothing.

acnebride · 17/10/2004 22:08

Really pleased to see this thread beansprout as have been wondering how things were since the 5th... bet you have too... what a long drawn-out time you are having. remember that hideous time well. positive quick 'n' easy labour-inducing thoughts >>>>>>>

EvesMama · 17/10/2004 22:09

was induced with syntocin drip and if you knew how much pain was involved youd wait!!!

linnet · 17/10/2004 22:12

a friend of mine was induced with all of hers. the first 3 because she'd gone over. The 4th she said from the outset that if she went over she wanted induced. got to 4 days overdue and she went in to get induced she just couldn't be bothered waiting yet again.

Slinky · 17/10/2004 22:19

I was induced a week early for a mixture of reasons - DS1 was very unstable and kept spinning around from breech/transverse, didn't want to be in hospital over Christmas leaving DD1, and had SPD.

Very successful "prostin gel" induction resulting in a very fast, painful labour ending in a waterbirth.

However, different consultant with DD2. He insisted on letting nature taking its course, even though I was practically crippled with SPD (and trying to look after a nearly 4yo and 22 month old), and DD2 arrived 16 days late (induction was booked for Day 18).

I assumed my "fast, painful labour" with DS1 was due to being induced and thought that DD2s labour would be more like my DD1s (22hours and forceps). However, my NON-induced birth with DD2 was IDENTICAL to DS1s - although faster!!

Contractions started from nothing to one every 3 minutes - DD2 arrived 10 minutes after arriving at hospital (was fully dilated).

Thank you so much to everyone who has posted on this thread. You have really, really helped me make up my mind. I'm now very clear that I do not want to be induced (if I can avoid it) and that it is really worth hanging on for a few more days.

I was really wobbly yesterday and feel so much better today, now I am thinking clearly again. You've all really helped - thank you loads

Off to drink some more pineapple juice.....!
