Hi everyone. Me and my partner want to start trying for a baby again. I currently have the implant in and its been over 3 years now it expired in march but cannot get it removed yet because of the pandemic. My question is is it ok if we try for a baby in the meantime until i get the implant removed? Or is it best to wait until once its been removed? Thanks in advance x

From what I understood it’s best to get them replaced every 3 years, but they are able to work for longer than that.

Hi OP! 👋🏼
I was in the same boat, my implant expired in April but was causing my so much pain.. I got it removed at the local ICASH clinic and whilst removing the nurse said it was half embedded into muscle hence the pain! 🤢
I was told by the clinic that the implant will actually continue to feed hormones into your system up to a year after expiration... all be it a lower dosage of the hormone.

Some people do become pregnant whilst on the implant though, so it could work! 💓

It won’t do any harm If you do conceive (if there’s any hormone left it will prevent you getting pregnant anyway). But fairly unlikely to conceive until it’s removed, or expired for longer than that, as Pp say.

I got mine changed at the end of last year and the nurse asked me if we had sex in the last few days as if it was due to expire then there was a chance I could be pregnant. I had to do a test before she would replace it and take the morning after pill and do another pregnancy test a few weeks later. So I think that it is possible to get pregnant after it's expiry date. Best bit was I had got my dates wrong and it still had another month to go.

Implants don't stop working as soon as they expire, they are designed to last a lot longer I think they are just slightly less effective. I had one in for 2 years after it expired and then got it removed and got PG the next month.

NHS website says "You normally have a contraceptive implant for 3 years, but it can be left in and will continue to work for up to 4 years.

The risk of getting pregnant during the 4th year is very low."
