My friend has just had a baby and due to covid there are no antenatal classes and she is struggling to meet other new mums to share advice and get some helpful tips.

24 years ago when I had my children there were loads of magazines for new Mums. I've just popped in to our local super store to pick one up and it seems there are no parenting magazines... are they a thing of the past.

Things appear to have changed so much it seems my tips are well out of date.

Can anyone know where I can buy some magazines and if so which ones are most helpful for a new Mum

Thanks in advance.

There are loads of classes online. My hospital is running them free.

There’s an app called peanut which helps connect mums within the local area.

Thanks for the suggestions but I specifically wanted a magazine. 👍
I can't believe there isn't a demand for them anymore.

Really, you can't believe it? Who would pay for an expensive magazine with a couple of articles and plenty of ads, when there is so much free, expert advice online. Even fashion and lifestyle mags are struggling to stay in business at the moment and their potential audience is much bigger.

Why not tell her to come on here.

I've also been shocked at the lack of magazines, sometimes it's just nice to have something to browse through rather than being online. I found out that I was pregnant with my first in March and managed to get a couple of issues of Mother & Baby which I was really enjoying and was going to subscribe to however it was discontinued a couple of months later and as far as I can tell there aren't any other baby magazines left! So weird and such a shame...

Like a pp said nobody is going to pay for magazines when it’s all free online.

CurlsLDN · 03/09/2020 07:20

The two major magazines, Gurgle and Mother & Baby, have both stopped printing in the past couple of years.
If you go to a large wh Smith you should find B baby, Green Parent, and a few others.
But as pp's have said the reason the widely distributed magazines have gone is because new mums typically use sites such as Mumsnet to get their tips, product reviews etc and so sales plummeted.

I found and paid for a subscription to Baby magazine back in April. When nothing had arrived by mid July I called the company and they processed a refund as the magazine had stopped being published.

I think, as other posters have said, they're no longer printed because there's so much online.

Crystal87 · 03/09/2020 07:58

I used to like Gurgle but it stopped about a year ago I think. It was expensive for what it was but I liked flicking through it while I was doing night feeds. You could probably get past issues on Ebay but some of the information could be out of date.

I too wanted magazines when I was pregnant with DS (8 months) because when I had DD (15 years) and no Internet access, they were my main source of information. Mother & Baby still exists, but after buying three issues I soon realised that it's shite and mainly just a catalogue of superfluous over-priced products that I couldn't afford.

Print has been in decline since the internet became a thing. I’m surprised that this is surprising to you. Any information you could possible need is found on the internet via sites like this, blogs, social media etc. Browse Instagram and you’ll find midwives using their accounts to post daily tips and linking to blog posts they have written. The way people consume this information has changed rapidly in the past 20 years.

The demand for books is still around though, so if you want something you can physically hold then there are plenty of options.

The only pregnancy magazine I have come across recently is the free one written and distributed by boots to their Baby Club membership list. I think this is just a one-off one though that you get sent when you join.

Thank you all for replying.
My friend is a single parent and never has internet or data, she did say she's getting a new phone soon so fingers crossed she will join us. 👍
