starting to worry about weight gain

I'm 23 weeks and have put on 10kg, which I think is about 1 stone 8 lbs. I've always put weight on easily and normally manage it with a mostly keto diet, but have needed to eat more carbs since being pregnant.

I have a history of insulin resistance so am being referred to the endocrinologist and I wonder if I'll have gestational diabetes.

The doctor was saying she'd want me to ideally stick to 12kg weight gain in pregnancy total but it's almost certain I'll go over that now and I'm starting to worry.

How much weight would you typically be looking at gaining in pregnancy? And what should I be doing during the rest of the pregnancy to avoid gaining too much more (while still keeping baby safe)?

Did you exercise before pregnancy - by and large, anything you did before is probably safe to continue. I was still running and doing hiit when I was 32 weeks (then bump got too big so switched to walking). If not, you could take up walking or yoga, something to keep you active and prepare your body for labour too.

Everyone is completely different and their body will react differently to pregnancy. I am an identical twin and I’ve put on 1stone 3pounds so far (I’m almost 36 weeks) but my twin sister put on 3stone 7 pounds in her pregnancy. Looking at us, you wouldn’t see almost 2 stone difference in weight.

The best thing to do is speak with your midwife to see if she can suggest anything to ensure you and baby remain healthy and happy throughout your pregnancy Smile that’s what’s the most important. Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy!

I'm super confused as to why the Dr would want you to put on 12kgs. I've been given a range (10kgs - 15kgs) but have been told if I go over that range it's not the end of the world!

This calculator www.calculator.net/pregnancy-weight-gain-calculator.html is useful as it takes your pre pregnancy weight as a starting point, then gives you a range.

Currently I'm 31 weeks and have gone from 60kgs - 70.5kgs. Fully expecting to be around 75kgs at delivery.

To keep a check on the weight, I am still able to go to the gym regularly (5x per week, 5x 5k runs, 2x weight training, 2x yoga) and use MyFitnessPal to ensure I'm eating 2000-2300 calories per day

I'm 28 weeks and have gained about 1st 6lb. It's a bit worrying as my bmi was 25. Something at the start so I shouldn't gain too much but it seems to go on regardless. I think I'll be luck to get away with 2 stone gain at this rate. Do you know what your bmi was to begin with?

I put on a stone and a half by 25 weeks as I was eating lots of carbs and covering it all in butter. Not long after that I started eating normally again and weight gain really slowed, I didn't actually put any weight on for a month at the start of the third trimester and I'm up 2 stone 3 at nearly 38 weeks, so I feel a lot better now. I was panicking I was going to be massive at the rate I was gaining so don't worry too much, it will probably even out!

By the way I mainly eat healthy fresh meals with lots of veg now, and snack on fruit/nuts/nakd bars/rice cakes with natural peanut butter rather than toast or crumpets covered in butter or something similar. Weekends we tend to have a cheat day with a "bad" meal and chocolate/sweets so it's not all boring

I'd put on a Stone by ten weeks and went on to put on another 2 stone. Had a completely normal and healthy pregnancy and baby and was a size 10 & 9 stone again by 6 months postpartum.

I ended up setting myself a weight gain "allowance" of just under 3 stone to stop beating myself up about the numbers going up, which made it a lot easier to accept. It also made me keep an eye on how quickly I was gaining and make the healthy adjustments to keep me under target

Thank you for all your help! If I'm honest with myself, I could definitely be doing more exercise so I will try and ramp that up.

I will also track my calories on my fitness pal and keep to the healthy foods :)

I counted calories for one day 😂, I don't think it works when pregnant as you need to listen to your body and eat when you need to. Just try and make the healthy choices and it becomes easier 😊

I gained 16 kilo all in the first 2 trimesters 😬. I was told to keep it under 12 kilo too but I was hungry all the time. It melted off me after though 😅

I was extra active with work in my third trimester which is why I didn’t gain weight . I didn’t mean not to gain but I was walking 15-20kms a day 5 days a week. Baby was growing just fine though and was always measuring ahead .
