I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@PhotoMum4 I've just watched the documentary, and it's actually made me feel worse! I feel like I'm putting it on because I'm not as bad as most of these women. I feel guilty for not working!

bex757 · 30/10/2020 12:02

So they refused to change my meds or give me fluids in hospital just gave me some anti sickness injections and that was that, i was up there for 4 hours! Today I have taken very small amount of liquid down and am gonna try some lunch.

Wingingitatlifesincebirth · 30/10/2020 12:16

@SweetpeaOrMarigold I think lactulose is safe in pregnancy for constipation if you can’t stomach it a glycerine suppository is also safe as far as I know both available over counter. That’s said I haven’t had constipation this pregnancy yet so thinking back to 2017 with my
Second.

@gretagreengrapes I watched it myself and grateful of my meds allowing me to function to some level even tho I basically feel horrendous. That was me In 2012 unmedicated and I’m guessing they need to show the most extreme cases to highlight HG. No ones suffering needs fo be compared as the doctor said if it affects your day to day life it’s a problem.

@bex757 that’s absolutely rubbish but at least the sickness injections should allow you to get on board some fluid I’m really forcing myself my drink and trying to eat every couple of hours even though I’m not feeling it.

bex757 · 30/10/2020 12:20

@Wingingitatlifesincebirth I'm slipping squash little and often and now gonna try some lunch, I'm so dehydrated today- I have a headache and haven't been for wee yet today so know I am, but the hospital didn't seem worried.

dellabrew · 30/10/2020 12:52

Am at hospital now, Rang them and they said to come in ...but the wait times ...grrr! Been sat here for 2 hours ...and masks really don't help sickness do they :( desperate to be seen and get out of here now...

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 30/10/2020 15:23

Sorry @dellabrew that happened to me the first time too and it was teatime on the ward, felt like I'd rather die than be there.

Gp has prescribed me fybogel and omeprazole and has said we need a discussion about steroids next week Sad has anyone got experience with this?
Also I'm dehydrated but ketones are sticking at trace, do I stay at home until the ketones go up?

Tiff94 · 30/10/2020 16:55

@SweetpeaOrMarigold yes I do I'm currently taking steroids now my are called predisolone since being in them I'm so much better

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 30/10/2020 18:37

@Tiff94 thanks will see what the weekend brings. Currently waiting for my 10yo to go to his dads so I can phone epau and ask if I need to go in tonight.

Tiff94 · 30/10/2020 20:08

@SweetpeaOrMarigold are you keeping anything down at all ? Even sips? Do you currently have keytones ? If you get too bad it's safer to go in. I had to see a specialist consultant at antenatal to get the steroids and current do reviews now ever two weeks I've been on them almost a month. Before that it was so many hospital trips. And weeks went by without me being able to eat or drink anything. I'm also taking xonvea my consultant recommended this is a very good anti sickness with the least amount of side affects out of all apparently. Xxx

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 30/10/2020 20:12

@Tiff94 I'm sat in the waiting room now. Ketones jumped up from 1 to 3 this evening. Not been seen yet. Shattered.

LucindaE · 30/10/2020 21:36

Welcome to deliabrew. Sorry you are so ill and I am glad you have had great advi ce on here and gone to hospital about that measurement. You must have been very dehydrated. As a veteran, you obviously know about what fluids suit you and the kesostix and the usefulness of anti acids. I hope they can give you something that really helps.
Singleandttc Sorry to hear you suffered up to 32 weeks last time. I hope you get off more lightly.
bex757 Oh dear. I hope the injections help matters. It is awful the way you have spend so much time in hospital.
Snapple21 As others say, 10 weeks can be the time of a hormonal surge and is often considered the worst stage by many.
SweetpeaOrMarigold I so agree with others about Lactulose or the jelly suppositories. I am glad to hear that the doctor is considering steroids if this regime doesn't work. Sorry that you feel bad enough to need to go in for fluids.
PhotoMum4 I am so glad that they are doing a documentary. Grin about 'nearly empty sick bowl'!
Gretagreengrapes They may have been terribly ill on that programme, but that doesn't mean you aren't suffering. The nausea
can be one of the worst things.
Wingingitatlifesincebirth and others Great advice.
Tiff94 That is interesting, the combination of steroids with the new drug Xonvea.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

I’ve been very unwell with HG. I finally managed to see my GP who recognised how unwell I was and I had to be admitted to hospital for two days. Ketones+++ and pulse 140. 8 bags of fluids.

The obs&gynae reg said I was the sickest HG patient she had ever seen!

snapple21 · 30/10/2020 22:13

I went in and had a bag of fluids, some im and iv anti emetics. Home now with ondansetron added to my meds. Hope it works!

PhotoMum4 · 31/10/2020 07:26

I’m jealous of everyone getting medication/taken seriously.

I spoke to midwife who said talk to gp, GP said talk to consultant, eventually saw the consultant the other day and she suggested a different anti sickness which just made me feel awful (shakes, dizzy, spaced out and didn’t improve the sickness/nausea at all) so now back to square one with cyclizine which works a bit but still nauseous all day long.

What meds have people found best for curbing the nausea? I feel like I could vomit any moment And as if it’s just there in my throat waiting for a hiccup/cough/burp to come up 24/7. Finding this part worse than the actual vomiting now. Plus the constipation from the meds sucks too.

20 weeks now, and with my son felt like this (less vomiting) until he was born, March feels A LONG way off 🤢😳.

Wingingitatlifesincebirth · 31/10/2020 08:21

@Funkypolar that’s awful how did you manage so long ? 8 bags of fluid is so much hopefully
This gets you on the right track.

@snapple21 ondansetron is a life saver for me
I really hope it works for you

@PhotoMum4 you really don’t sound like your very well at all, I didn’t find cyclazine helpful at all it made me feel dizzier which induced more vomiting. I unfortunately found the only think that helped me was ondansetron and I went through several different meds and hospital admissions to get that. I haven’t personally used pregnancy sickness support but you can get in touch with them to see if they can help xx

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 31/10/2020 11:17

Morning. Ketones are 8 on their machine that apparently goes up to 9. My dipstick goes up to 4 so wonder if its different scales?
Rubbish night, cracking headache, ward full of confused elderly patients so not slept!
On bag 5 and got another in an hour.
Good news though I kept down my morning meds AND a whole crumpet and about 50mls water. Feel very pleased with myself.

Doughnut100 · 31/10/2020 14:53

Hey everyone hope you are holding on

I am 14 weeks pregnant and have been having very bad sickness, diarrhoea, wind, and digestive cramps since week 5.

I thought the diarrhoea and cramps were just part of the morning sickness and then I had a day when it came on instantly after I took my pregnacare and vegan omega 3 capsules so I am wondering if it is due to them.

I haven't been eating big meals because of the sickness but I would always take my pills with a snack. I thought maybe I needed to take them with a bigger meal which worked yesterday but didn't work today.

I'm going to experiment with stopping the omega 3 and replacing the pregnacare with folic acid and vit d. Has anyone else found that pregnacare or omega 3 capsules cause diarrhoea? Or am I being mad?

gretagreengrapes · 31/10/2020 18:14

@Doughnut100 pregnacare did not agree with my gut at all! Improved when I changed to plain vit D and folic acid. And I try to eat breakfast cereals with added vitamins

Doughnut100 · 31/10/2020 18:31

@gretagreengrapes thank you. Glad you felt better when you stopped. I am going to feel like such a numpty if 50% of my pregnancy sickness has just been a reaction to pregnacare!

gretagreengrapes · 31/10/2020 20:11

@Doughnut100 I hope stopping helps you.

If you Google PUQE score calculator the first result is rotherham's guidance on pregancy sickness and the first step is stop multi vitamins with iron in! So it's definitely worth stopping those for everyone! (But continue plain folic acid)

LucindaE · 31/10/2020 21:06

Donought100 and Greatgreengrapes That is intriguing. I certainly had awful vomiting with iron tablets myself, and a good few on here have found that iron or a multivitamin with iron make the sickness worse.Donough100 I hope it helps. Gretagreengrapes Good advice!
SweetpeaOrMarigold Oh dear about being sleepless, kept awake by confused patients. I am glad you mangaged to eat and drink a bit and while those measurements sound dramatic, I do hope they can work out an effective regime of meds soon.
PhotoMum4 I so agree with Wingingitatlifesincebirth about phoning Pregnancy Sickness Support on 024 7638 2020 who should be able to phone back with good advice about meds.
Funkypolar I am sorry to hear you had to be so ill to be taken seriously by the GP. I hope they have worked out some more effective meds?
Snaffle21 Ondansetron helps many. Do get a laxative though - such as those suppositories from Boots - to help with the constipation - though they use them on pregnant women in hospitals, you may have to send someone else for them if they know you are pregnant. There is Lactulose, and I actually forget if you have to have a prescription for it.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Happy Sunday ladies I am literally just hear to
Vent I am totally exhausted constantly feeling sick and fed up. This week had been so hard and I’ve just turned 7 weeks I basically killed my self taking kids out last night in their costumes so as not to let them down. I am absolutely not eating or drinking enough but constantly wretching and I know getting close to dehydration even tho tablets are Helping lessen the vomiting. I’m back to work tomorrow and need to see how it goes whether I can manage it or need to go off sick I am
Working from home luckily due to circumstances but not even sure how I’ll manage that x

Doughnut100 · 01/11/2020 13:12

@LucindaE @gretagreengrapes I will report back, I'm stopping taking it from today.

@Wingingitatlifesincebirth solidarity... I know how you feel, even working from home is impossible when you feel so bad x

Oceansound90 · 01/11/2020 13:31

Hi,
Can I join please. 10 weeks pregnant and 24/7 nausea and vomiting. Not dehydrated. I am able to keep tap water down. Tried cyclizine and stemetil but no success. I have lost quite a bit of weight over the last three weeks about 7%. I can't leave the bed as everytime I get up I feel sick. I have not eaten anything of substance for a long time. I dont see how I can go to work and was wondering if anyone has been signed off with this?

Wingingitatlifesincebirth · 01/11/2020 15:14

@Oceansound90 this a Great supportive group for anyone who is struggling we are all in similar positions and it sounds as though your feeling really ill and your medication isn’t improving, perhaps contact your GP see if you can be given any alternatives. Don’t be afraid to be signed off work if you need to I was signed off in my first pregnancy and listen to your body if you need to rest xx
