I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Today was a bad day, am 8+6. Had my morning meds fine then vomited bile a bit later. Slept the whole day til school run which means I've made myself worse because I've not tried food at all. Came home had some water and bile vomit again. GP phoned back and offered 5 days max metaclopromide and said theres no other options. I'm dehydrated now but feel ok, going to pack a bag for my booking appt tomorrow because I've a feeling they might make me stay in when they see my wee sample Sad

Tiff94 · 12/10/2020 17:35

@SweetpeaOrMarigold Ask the gp for ondansetron if the metoclopramide don't work I found I got awfully sick on those but as better on the ondansetron I'm now also on a steroid after trying many combinations over the past weeks I'm now 15+1 and started to feel a bit better lately since starting the steroids I will ease back on the dosages this week so hopefully can go off them soon.

LucindaE · 12/10/2020 19:58

Tiff94 Great advice for SweetpeaOrMarigold. I am so glad the steroids have helped you and you are feeling well enough to reduce meds.
SweetpeaOrMarigold That sounds awful. Sadly, you must be quite dehydrated by now and maybe they will keep you in. I so agree with SweetpeaorMarigold about asking for Ondansetron. It's not strictly true that all options have been exhausted in your case.

doritodiva Sorry - I put that in a rather obscure way. I meant that do you think the fatigue builds up over the week so that you suffer badly at weekends? If you are working, it is very difficult not to overdo things, and rest is one of the best medicines for this but not easy to come by!
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

@LucindaE aah I see. Possibly. I think I start relaxing and the nausea is worse. I try and keep things the same, such as wake up times and when I have my breakfast etc.

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 12/10/2020 20:28

Thanks ladies. Tried my failsafe ice lolly and it came back too so am running on empty. Will phone epau in the morning if I'm the same. Have packed a bag.

This group is so helpful, my last pregnancy I didn’t know anyone who felt as rough as I do when pregnant and it made me feel useless and like I was doing something wrong/being a wuss.

I now have one friend in real life who suffered with HG in her pregnancy and this group which is a huge support.

I’m 17+4 today and still feeling dreadful.

I find I am burping a lot and that brings the threat of vomit following, anyone found anything That helps the burping/reflux? Doesn’t seem to be food related as bad all the time. Hoping I can Reduce the burping and it might reduce the vomiting.

Taking cyclizine 3 times a day and Ondanstron on bad days, when I don’t take anything still can’t get out of bed. So exhausted.

I agree about the weekends and Mondays being worse after a busy week at work.

composed · 13/10/2020 07:58

Hi all

I was on this thread last yr with hg and earlier this summer but had a miscarriage. I now find myself pregnant again and can already feel nausea building and food aversions not to mention being off water already. I went back to work after mat leave but due to how im feeling and already being on meds have had to tell my manager that I not be back. I am scared due to the hg and past losses but as everything is still fresh in my mind from last year terrified how I will
cope again and this time with a 10 month old, I can already feel myself slipping Sad

Mulderitssme · 13/10/2020 08:04

Hi, looking for advice please. I'm 9+2 and have had nausea for about 5.5 weeks. I was placed on cyclazine and then another med but the nausea keeps getting worse. I tried to take my meds but was sick. Any advice? I have a banging headache and this is the furthest I've got with any pregnancy so this is new to me.

Thank you.

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 13/10/2020 08:17

@Mulderitssme you need to speak to epau/gp they will probably dip your urine and see how dehydrated you are. That's where I'm up to too, now very shaky and have fast pulse so I'm pretty dehydrated and will probably be on a drip this afternoon

Mulderitssme · 13/10/2020 08:34

Thank you. I've now been sick twice but just don't want to waste anyone's time. I don't know if this is just normal or not.

Jlw2020 · 13/10/2020 08:58

@SweetpeaOrMarigold Hope all goes well today, sounds like the drip might not be such a bad thing. After my wobble last week symptoms are back ten fold, trying to work Cyclizine in to a good routine of me eating etc. Had a funny turn in Tesco at the weekend and just got home in time before I was actually violently sick (first time!) and have been sick a couple of times every day since even with the tablets. Woke up feeling awful this morning, had my tablet - then a banana, just text my other half to inform him I’m never eating bananas again! Not been able to shake the feeling of being on the cusp of about to vomit for a few days now, thankfully I have the week booked off work so trying to adjust and see what works for me. A few friends had said their nausea turned in to actual sickness by week 9 and here I am! Forever grateful to have made it this far given past losses but surviving on a diet of full fat coke, cucumber and salt and vinegar hula hoops! I’m terrible when I’m sick I’ve always cried, but I’m so violently sick now that I pee myself a bit, much to OH’s amusement! 🙊

Tiff94 · 13/10/2020 11:42

@SweetpeaOrMarigold I had this so much last month was dehydrated for weeks. Had my urine dipped so many time and had days of such bad keytones. If you can't keep anything done and you have keytones you probably need a visit to a&e for some iv therapy I had this done 4 times last month so much time in hospital but have came out on the other side. There are still options to be done but I found the gp only can do a few. I spoke to some gynaecologist whilst admitted which they put me on a combination on cyclizine, prochlorperazine and ondansetron three times a day that is the last option they will give you before needing to see a consultant before anything major will change which is when they will offer steroids which is what I'm taking now. I had also been offered another drug but they only just called me yesterday to say it's in stock after waiting so long for it. I'm not sure if I will start it now as I've just reduced the steroids to see how I go. I found that it's not very easy to actually get the help you need. So unless you push the issue and make it happen the doctors will give you the same anti sickness. I had to go through so much just to get the referral to the maternal medicine clinic but glad I did because suffer with HG has been one of the worst experiences I've ever gone through. It's not easy at all. It took me weeks of being sick before I was able to eat half decently again which has only been this past week. I'd lost so much weight because of it but thankfully our little ones are strong and take all they need from the little bits we do get. I hope you get some help. It's such a hard struggling time and I do feel for you it's so horrible. Xx

Anyat212 · 13/10/2020 13:28

@Jlw2020

I just wanted to say the same thing happens to me when I vomit! My sickness is only once a day now and it's not as violent so I'm not peeing myself as much these days haha. I hope yours improves soon.

@Tiff94 I totally echo your words on pushing for medication. It's absolutely exhausting going back and forth, calling doctors every day to change or review meds but you do need to be persistent. I wasn't in my first pregnancy and I suffered terribly throughout. This pregnancy (I'm 16.5 weeks now) and I've had it controlled for a number of weeks because I've finally found the right balance. That stemmed from being admitted in hospital for dehydration so @SweetpeaOrMarigold fingers crossed for you that they sort you out later. The drip did help me quite quickly but appreciate everyone is different.

Well I've been told to self isolate for 2 weeks I met with one of my friends over the weekend for dinner (first time I've been sociable since i was pregnant!) and my friend developed symptoms Sunday night and her test has come back positive. This is a prime example of people not understanding HG though, a few people have said to me "oh no 2 weeks of not leaving the house / isolating away" hahaha - its bloody normal for us 😂 I'm still being sick every morning but haven't got any symptoms yet. I'm hoping I've dodged it.

Hope everyone is coping today

LucindaE · 13/10/2020 19:27

composed Welcome back. Congratulations on baby, and I am sorry for your later miscarriage. Do get pre-emptive meds as fast as you can as the sooner you have them, the greater the chance of avoiding it becoming uncontrollable. As you are a veteran, you don't need my normal spiel about ice lollies, kesostix and anti acids.
Mulderitssme Welcome. It is defintely too severe to be normal, particularly as you have been on two anti emetics which haven't worked. Unfortunately, the headache is probably a dehydration headache, and I so agree with others, do phone for advice on the NHS direct line if you haven't already. They may need to test to see if you need fluids. Never worry about wasting time. It is very important to keep as hydrated as you can. Here is my normal spiel, which I hope will help. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. Some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange, 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport . Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels, slices of melon and mango, grated cheese, baked potatoes, grated cheese, bagels and biscuits.
PhotoMum4 I am so glad that you have found this thread useful and I do hope you get an improvement soon.
SweetpeaOrMarigold Did they admit you? It certainly seems as if they ought to have.
Jwl2020 Poor you, there seems to be a big hormonal surge round weeks 9 and 10. I remember the Puking and Peeing sessions as too well, much symapthy.
Tiff94 Excellent advice. It is so dififcult to press for effective treatment when feeling dreadful, and I am glad you did it.
Anya2020 It's good you have no symptoms so far. That your first piece of socialising should end like that is too bad. This blasted virus.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

@LucindaE I've been on a promise of 'one more bag of fluid' all day but I've had 3 now and still have 3+ketones so they are keeping me overnight. Still feel sick and tired but not so dizzy. Having a more nutritional bag this time to help. Will have to have covid swabs and I hope I dont vomit with it!

snapple21 · 13/10/2020 22:36

Hi I'm new to this thread but I've been struggling with hyperemesis, was in the epau the last two days as a day patient receiving iv fluids and IM/IV anti emetics. Had 3 bags today too! I'm home now and they've prescribed thiamine, cyclizine and prochlorperazine and the dreaded enoxaparin blood thinners. I've never felt as poorly but feels manageable tonight. Let's see what tomorrow brings. Hopefully these new meds will help.

Tiff94 · 13/10/2020 22:51

@SweetpeaOrMarigold staying overnight is a good thing I had to do this they kept me for 3 day to rehydrate me as I have 5+keytones so it's takes a bit especially if your not eating. The covid swan isn't too bad I had to have that as well. Rest up try get some sleep you will be woken up for some more keytones check.Xx best of luck sorry your having to go through this it totally sucks.

Mulderitssme · 14/10/2020 06:29

Hi @LucindaE, thank you so much for that advice. I did go to the EPU and they tested me. My ketones were low so they prescribed a different medication plus gave me an injection. I'm hoping if will make a difference now. I have my booking in appointment today so finger's crossed for that.

composed · 14/10/2020 18:35

@LucindaE thank you for your kind words, I’ve started taking one ondansetron a day at the moment. Looking like I may have to go back on sick leave as I can’t even think about getting up and going into work at a hospital. So glad to hear @SweetpeaOrMarigold that you’ve been able to get some fluids, I always found they helped. @snapple21 hope you’re feeling as well as you can be and that the meds are working, praying everyone else is doing better too. We can do this, one day at a time as I used to tell myself xx

snapple21 · 14/10/2020 18:46

@composed I'm on sick leave there's no way I can wear a mask and work at the moment. I've been a little better today on my new meds. Feel nauseous but not vomiting. So that's good 🙏🏻

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 14/10/2020 18:48

Managed to get down to 2+ and they let me home with stemitel cyclizine and thiamine after 6 bags. Been told to keep dipping and come in much sooner next time as it took so long to get my ketones down I was in a big fluid deficit.
Ate when I got in (crumpets) and slept for a few hours before the school run. Vomited down to bile again when I got back. Forcing myself to eat and drink because I know it's the only way.

LucindaE · 14/10/2020 20:11

snapple21 Welcome. Sorry that you had to have fluids. I hope the meds help a lot. There's lots of support on here. Here is my normal spiel, which I hope will help. SweetpeaOrMarigold I am glad you have been released. You must have had some stubborn ketones!
Tiff94 ...And on that, 5+ ketones must be really grim.
composed I hope the Ondansetron helps. If you were on it before, you don't need me to warn you about the need for a laxative!
mulderitssme I am so glad you were checked at EPU and I do hope that the meds are effective. I've got a silly question: I'm curious about the origins of your name?

Having a rough couple of days, lots of tears, I have the week off work for annual leave and was hoping for lots of rest and getting used to the cyclizine. I think all the tablets are doing is stopping the trigger of smells and allowing me to eat but I’m still retching from the depths if I don’t eat every hour, still sick (not as much) but the feeling of constant nausea just isn’t going and I have this awful lump in my throat 24/7 like there’s something stuck, like a hair ball or something and I think that’s what’s making me feel worse, like I need to be sick but the tablets are suppressing it. I’m not very good at being sick I never have been I always cry but it’s like a genuine phobia. I’ve just moped around all week and I’m dreading going back to work on Monday if I feel like this. Anyone else had this feeling?

LouJ85 · 15/10/2020 20:45

@Jlw2020 I really feel for you. When my sickness was at its worst around weeks 7-11 I constantly felt like I had something stuck in my throat like a hair ball - i was wretching constantly to try and get it out of my throat, was bloody awful. Turned out it was stomach acid coming up and prescription omeprazole as well as ondanestron and cyclizine together really helped. I'm still on all those meds now at almost 14 weeks. The nausea has massively subsided apart from the occasional wave here and there, usually triggered if I haven't eaten for a while or by smells of food or cooking (chicken in particular turns me green!!). Sending you virtual hugs and hoping you feel better soon x
