I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@Beapo so sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine what you’re going through. Sending much love ❤️ xx

Dimpous · 01/10/2020 18:07

@Beapo so sorry to read of your loss thinking of you at this horrid time Thanks

LucindaE · 01/10/2020 20:07

Beapo I am so sorry to hear that. Like others, I'll be thinking of you. It is very hard to deal with. I hope you have got lots of emotional support.
Firsttimemum21 Antiacids can make a huge difference. There's Gaviscon, tablet form seems to have less bloating. There's Omprazole, and I unfortunately don't remember if you can get that over the counter or if the doctor writes a prescription.

@Beapo I'm so, so sorry for your loss. Big hugs and thinking of you.

@Firsttimemum21 Gaviscon peppermint dual action tablets have been helping me.

Well I thought the sickness had gone and then reappeared in spectacular style on weds morning. 23 weeks! So much so blood started to come up as I was retching so hard on an empty stomach! And my tummy muscles are so sore. Went into triage as couldn't feel movements but it was fine luckily. Now I just feel constantly sick again. Thought I had escaped 🙁

Also - anyone been getting heart palpitations?

doritodiva · 02/10/2020 13:09

@Beapo so sorry for you loss thinking of you x

LucindaE · 02/10/2020 20:03

blueskiesandapples That is a disappointment. Hopefully, it is a bad day and a good few reasonable days are mostly a sign of more to come.
I vaguely connect heart palpitations with low blood sugar or low blood pressure?

doritodiva · 03/10/2020 08:22

Has anyone had sickness fo around the 12/13 week mark? Mine had eased to almost disappeared. I'm too scared to stop the tablets just yet

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 03/10/2020 16:50

So sorry @Beapo it's the most awful thing, I hope you have people close to you to talk to or be quiet with xxx

Tiff94 · 03/10/2020 18:24

Just joining this thread now some may know me from the April 21 thread and FB group. I've been suffering with hypermesis since week 6 will be 14weeks tomorrow and it hasn't eased for me the slightest. I'm currently on cyclizine, prochlorperazine and ondansetron which I find work sometimes other not. Been admitted to hospital every week since week 9 and finding the lack of support and care that women experiencing hypermesis absolutely disgusting. Last trip to hospital on Thursday ended up with me demanding that take out my canullar and leaving because after waiting 9hours to see a special consultant they didn't bother to show up and sent a gynae student who knew absolutely nothing about me and just wanted me to keep using the same useless medication I've been on since week 6. I've started contacting private specialists to be seen because I think the care that I've received has been below satisfactory. I'm totally fed up with hypermesis and have been struggling so bad these past 8 weeks. Makes it worst I'm in a country where I have no family or friends to support apart from the lovely ladies I've met on here on our threads. If anyone has any suggestions of how to be taking seriously I'd love to hear them. Sending positive vibes to all experience this crappy part of our pregnancy's.

LucindaE · 03/10/2020 20:58

Tiff94 Welcome. Sorry you are suffering in a country with no support network. That combination of meds is very often effective, but you obviously have it badly. It must be grim having weekly hospitalisations.
Have they discussed steroids with you? Everyone on here is very supportive. I will add you date of 21 April to the Due Dates list.
Here is my normal spiel in case it is any use. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. Some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange, 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport . Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels, slices of melon and mango, grated cheese, baked potatoes, grated cheese, bagels and biscuits.
doritodiva A number of luckier women have got a lot better about this time. Excellent to hear that you are so much better. Generally, I believe it is best to reduce the meds slowly and see how you go.
Waves to SweetpeaOrMarigold and everyone.

@LucindaE I thought it had gone but I've still had waves of nausea and was sick yesterday. Think the tabs might just be working a bit better or I'm taking them at the corrrect time.

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 04/10/2020 07:43

@Tiff94 sounds miserable. When I was admitted with my first child I felt like I was a burden to the staff who weren't interested at all and didn't change my fluid bags until I asked over and over. I was an inconvenience.
@LucindaE waves hi I'm coping ok, vomiting once or twice a day and surviving on crisps, (including a holiday the last week to Turkey-took extra cyclizine and slept through the plane) although managed a lot of the Morrisons vegan breakfast yesterday so felt very pleased with myself. Meat and fruit/veg are absolutely not an option currently on cyclizine. So difficult to hide from my 10yo, and back at work next week which will be interesting on 13 hour shifts, pretty sure I will be outed. Now 7+3.

Jlw2020 · 04/10/2020 11:40

Hiii I’m joining if that’s okay! I’m due May 21st, 7+3 today - 3rd pregnancy of the year following miscarriage and a chemical. As soon as I got my positive I was wishing and praying for the symptoms to start as I didn’t have any before and they’ve hit me like a truck! Another thread pointed me this way as For 2 weeks I can’t stand the sight of food, anything makes my stomach flip so it’s a real struggle to eat and although I’ve not actually been sick I’m on all fours retching in to the loo, a bowl, office bin until I’m red in the face! I wake up about 5am with crippling stomach pains and have to run to the loo where the pressure on my tummy is instantly relieved by projectile bowel movements (sorry tmi 💩) and I retch for a couple of hours trying to eat bread bananas crackers anything. I force myself to eat for hours then I get a bit of relief in the afternoon but come dinner time I’m on all fours again! I’ve tried ginger biscuits ginger beer, sour sweets, have worn nausea bands for the whole week - nothing is helping in the slightest. I keep finding myself sobbing and feeling horrendously guilty having cursed people I know for moaning during pregnancy when I’d have given anything to be in their place having lost 2 but I’m struggling to function. I’ve heard of anti sickness medication but I’m not actually being sick so I don’t know if I’d be allowed it! Does anyone have any advice?! My OH suggested Andrews salts which I used to have with hangovers (I got them badly I’ve always had a sensitive stomach) but I don’t know if they’re safe? I’m so happy and want to enjoy my pregnancy I just need something to take the edge of! I’m writing this laid out on the sofa with my head IN a mixing bowl having been here since 6am 🤦🏻‍♀️ I hear it gets worse and peaks around 9 weeks?!
I’m seeing my maternity support worker tomorrow so anything I need to ask for I will tomorrow!

Tiff94 · 04/10/2020 12:11

@LucindaE I'm not 21 April in April 4th due date I meant most people know me from the April 2021 threads. I've been on this combination for a while doesn't seem to work the best for me. I had discussed The steroids at 3rd visit and should have been put on them when I last entered hospital but it has to be a consultant that's gives them and they didn't show up just send a student gynaecologist to deal with me instead. Hubby is diabetic so already have ketostix which i use regular as I've had keytones for about 6days straight now goes up to 16at some stages and drops back down if I mange enough water. I've literally tried everything everyone has said but find nothing works for myself no food or drink helps me at all I find I vomit most of it up. To be honest I'm sick of the weekly hospital visits I had a good discussion with a midwife yesterday and hoping I can be put to antenatal early for weekly rehydration treatment I will speak with them on Monday about an appointment. Hope everyone else is doing well so far today. Xx

LucindaE · 04/10/2020 18:18

Jlw2020 Welcome. I'm sorry about your losses before followed by suffering badly. It sounds too violent to be normal, even without vomiting, and I definitely think you should ask for meds. They might well offer you Cyclizine, which has been used safely in pregnancy for decades, or maybe the new medication specially for pregnancy sickness Xonvea. I don't actually know about Andrews! I am sure ginger bisucits have never helped any Hyperemesis sufferer, sadly. I'll add your date.
Waves to all. That was an amazing rainstorm yesterday - one of the few days I have ever wimped out of taking a walk!
Tiff94 Ah, I see: I''ll change that date to 4 April.

@LucindaE Thank you! Funny that’s all I’ve been trying to eat jacket potato and grated cheese and bits of salad, I ate a whole cucumber the other day. I bought some ready salted crisps though and they made me retch for ages because they were just oily. Melon that’s a good one! I’d never heard of this condition until today and I always thought I’d suffer with sickness when I was pregnant but this is borderline debilitating. I just felt a little embarrassed to admit how badly I’m struggling a few weeks in. Thank you so much for making me feel more normal.

blueskiesandapples · 05/10/2020 08:08

Thanks @LucindaE - after a few days it seems to have mostly settled again apart from having to eat the instant I wake up again. Phew! Thanks for your support.

In other news, am I just being over sensitive when my DM, who I only see over video chat at the moment as they live a long way away, saw my belly for the first time in ages and said you're look like a tellytubby!' ? I was really offended but DH thought it was harmless.

LucindaE · 05/10/2020 18:39

Jlw2020 There is no doubt that Hyperemesis is terribly debilitating and isolating. Melon has helped many. Sorry you had a bad experience with crisps.
BlueskiesandApples I am so glad it has passed. Very likely it was one of the hormonal surges?

I think my tablets have stopped working. Had an awful day yesterday. I need to speak to the dr today to ask for something else. I'm meant to be at work. Do you think they will sign me off? Until the nee tablets start to work?

Dimpous · 06/10/2020 07:04

Hi all just checking in, thought I was having some better days towards the end of last week but this weekend I felt back to square one and I'm just utterly run down. I'm trying so hard to recognise that the meds have reduced the frequency of being sick but the constant nauseous feeling is just so tiring and I'm really really struggling to sleep at night because of it.
Any tips for at nighttime? I feel like the meds wear off during the night at the nausea is just overwhelming

Dimpous · 06/10/2020 07:05

@doritodiva I'm sure if you discuss with the GP they will sign you off. You can't work if you are unwell. Hope some new meds help soon!

doritodiva · 06/10/2020 09:56

@Dimpous they've prescribed me metro something instead. He said they shouldn't make me drowsy so I'm hoping for the best. Hope you're feeling better soon.
