Hi all. I was hoping for a natural birth but the baby has other plans, as he/she is breach at 35+4 i will probably need a C section. Can i still do skin to skin contact immediately after? Thank you

Had my baby in 2016 and yes they will do the usual checks, then ask if you want baby cleaned up first or if you want the baby on your chest or tummy.

Just let them know when you go in what you want.
I actually said no, (I regret it now) I’m very squeamish and thought I was going to pass out. So hubby held her near me without putting her on me.

mrssunshinexxx · 30/08/2020 14:50

@DJBebe I BF too they put her on me 30 mins later and latched her on but I was asleep

I've had three sections, couldn't do skin to skin straight away with the first as was put under General for emergency c sec, but did it as soon as I could for all three. It's not easy, as when on my own it's hard to move whilst healing, but it was perfectly doable.

YouJustDoYou · 30/08/2020 14:53

My first two never could latch properly, ever. Third latched beautiful - she had a much wider mouth!

TakeMeToYourLiar · 30/08/2020 14:55

@DJBebe

Thank you all. *@MindyStClaire* that's exactly why I'm a bit anxious because i want to breastfeed. For how long did you have to stay in the hospital after the section? x
I also had a f section.

I couldn't cuddle him straight after birth as I was shaking too much

In recovery we did skin to skin, he bf for 2.5 years so it's big necessarily a deal breaker

DS was taken out, checked quickly, DH cut chord and DS placed on me for skin to skin whilst I was stitched up, he stayed there until after first breastfeed.

Yes, beware of the terrible wind! The midwives were fantastic with help & advice with breastfeeding & positions etc. Good luck OP!

Dd was an semi emcs in 2018. We had delayed cord clamping, a quick rub down and then skin to skin. All measurements etc were done in recovery about 3 hours later. They dropped the curtain so we could watch her come out which was amazing. Got discharged the following day. As far as I'm aware that's all standard for our local hospital where possible. I certainly didn't ask for it, the lovely (but scary) consultant told me what was going to happen.

@DJBebe This was pre Lockdown, I should have said.

He has a needle phobia so it was easier for me with him being out of the room so I didn't have to worry about him fainting 😆😆

I’ve had two sections. Both times dad has held baby while I’m being stitched up and then I’ve held in recovery. Breastfed easily both times. I just didn’t quite feel up to it while I was laying on the table even though it was in my birth plan and offered by midwife. My blood pressure was quite low so get I might pass out a couple of times and there isn’t actually a huge lot of space for the baby to lie before the drapes cut across you so they would be laying right up on your upper chest/neck. I just wanted to operation complete and was happy to just have baby level with my head safely held by partner. I’m 5:3, taller folk may have more space!

Yes my DS is 2.5 and I was offered skin to skin immediately afterwards.
However the anaesthetic I had (spinal) was so strong that I wasn't confident enough to hold him- my arms didn't work properly.
My DH took him into the recovery room and had skin to skin while they stitiched me up.
(Worth saying, I LOVED my c-section- he was breech too- and couldn't have wanted for a better birth).

MissSmith80 · 30/08/2020 19:42

I had delayed cord cutting and skin to skin post an elective section for a breech delivery. They checked him over and then he was on my chest.
My spinal was quite high so they did give him to his Dad for cuddles while they sorted me out but he was back as quickly as they could - as soon as they were confident I was safe to hold him. He then stayed with me until we got to recovery where the midwife helped him latch for his first breast feed.
Be really clear on what you want and they will do all they can to make it happen but also be realistic - all the choices you make are because baby comes first. Good luck x

MissSmith80 · 30/08/2020 19:46

@YouBringLightInToADarkPlace second your comment about your section being amazing. I couldn't have wished for more despite it not being what I'd hoped for during pregnancy

ApplestheHare · 30/08/2020 19:52

I had a section just over a year ago and it was amazing. I had skin to skin and bf straight away, then got home less than 24h later. My vaginal birth was awful and resulted in 4 days in hospital so I was over the moon with the section.

toomuchtimes · 30/08/2020 21:40

Yes you can. I didn't in the room for reasons mentioned by pp - lying down, wires, little shaky etc. But had skin to skin and first breastfeed in recovery.

I had a c section in two different hospitals, one they let DH take baby outside whilst I was transferred from the op table to a bed and the other DH stayed the whole time and wasn't allowed to leave with baby alone.

Mine were for breech babies (not what I wanted after an easy vaginal birth but glad to get baby out safely), discharged after 24 hours both times. Remember that your DH can video the birth if you wish.

FirstTimeBumps · 30/08/2020 22:24

My hospital actively promote it. I was unfortunately to queazy and shaky so told them to give him to his dad who popped him up his shirt until.i was taken through to recovery and for over the shakes. I'm hoping this time around it may be possible. They did take him and weigh him first etc but I believe you can request all that is also delayed until later x

HappilyHoppily · 30/08/2020 22:31

My hospital were very supportive of it. My it’s came straight to me. But with my second I was shaking so hard I asked DH to hold him as I didn’t feel safe to. Once I was transferred to a bed and slightly upright I felt a lot better and the midwives helped pop him inside my gown. Both latched on while I was still in recovery - less than an hour after being born.

HappilyHoppily · 30/08/2020 22:32

*my first came straight to me

I had an elective gentle c section on Friday and was the most amazing experience. I had the curtain dropped for most of the surgery , my mum filmed it and the midwife got the most amazing photos of my little boy gentle working his way out. I had immediate skin to skin for at least 25 minutes whilst surgery was finished and we had delayed cord clamping. The whole process was explained throughout and I was constantly informed of everything. I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed it. I was discharged after 24 hours but could have stayed longer if needed , I'm now heading into day three and it's pretty reasonable recovery wise but obviously still a little pain as to be expected.
