Has shaving helped cure anybody's thrush?

Hi all!

I've had vaginal thrush for a couple of weeks now and today decided to shave without knowing the disadvantages of doing so.

I read somewhere on Mumsnet that some women find that when they shave, it cures their thrush!

Has this ever happened to you?

If not, what helped you cure it apart from medication and creams Smile

Thanks in advance Wink

No, that won’t help. You need proper treatment.

dementedpixie · 28/08/2020 22:23

Shaving will not clear up a fungal infection

Branleuse · 28/08/2020 22:24

No thats not how it works. You need a clotromizal pessary.

dementedpixie · 28/08/2020 22:26

Or you take an oral tablet

Lockdownseperation · 28/08/2020 22:26

Get some proper treatment and it will be gone in a couple of days.

Lockdownseperation · 28/08/2020 22:27

@dementedpixie

Or you take an oral tablet
The tablet is not recommended in pregnancy but a pessery is fine.

I read somewhere that women who dont shave have fewer infections.

dementedpixie · 28/08/2020 22:30

Sorry, hadn't noticed it was the pregnancy topic. You might need a course of pessaries for thrush in pregnancy

rebeccajdaniels · 28/08/2020 22:31

I am currently on medication for thrush, I am on canestan cream and had a pessary, sorry I should have mentioned that in op

Shaving is never recommended if you want to avoid infection because it creates tiny gashes in the skin which can let bacteria in.

In the case of thrush it might be a case of the thrush being on the way out anyway at the time of shaving?

TheMarzipanDildo · 28/08/2020 22:35

“ I am on canestan cream and had a pessary, sorry I should have mentioned that in op”

If the medication isn’t working, are you/the doctor sure it’s thrush? Sometimes symptoms get confused with conditions like lichen schlerosis (sp!) -also v itchy.

dementedpixie · 28/08/2020 22:37

Might need a course of pessaries rather than just one

rebeccajdaniels · 28/08/2020 22:57

@TheMarzipanDildo I'm sure it's thrush as doctor did a swab to check.

I'm not sure if the thrush has gone or not, I'm still using the cream but I never had itchiness or anything really so it's hard for me to know when it's gone haha Sad

In my first pregnancy (11 years ago) my GP gave me tablets to clear thrush as I had tried repeated pessaries which didn't help. The advice on tablets has probably changed since then.
Incidentally, I have had thrush a few times since and each time the pessaries have failed to help.
Good luck OP. Thrush can make you really miserable, especially when it goes on for weeks.

Thisonemaybe · 28/08/2020 23:41

If you google flora plus multi gyn, that is helpful to make sure it’s gone. Check if it’s ok in pregnancy though.

calimommy · 29/08/2020 03:07

Get some massive doses of probiotics into you. And keep taking them afterwards to keep it away. Also eat good plain yoghurt. Try to limit your sugar intake for a week or two. This is on top of the pessary medication obviously. I've had years and years of bad thrush but regular probiotics have helped me overcome it. But you absolutely need to take the antifungal medication for immediate treatment. Then look to the above for long term management.

I had thrush in my first pregnancy and the only thing that would sort it was was the Cannestan pessary. However, it only provided short term relief as it came back constantly throughout the whole pregnancy. I had swabs done in the hospital to see if there was anything else going on and it was just thrush (also picked up Strep B which I didn’t think was linked until someone else mentioned it on a thread that it could be). It went away once I had my baby and I’ve not had it since (touch wood) and I’ve since had another baby and now pregnant with my third and no sign of it. Not sure what was going on in that pregnancy but it was horrible having it for such a long time. Hope something manages to help you!
