Should water retention / swollen feet make me not be able to get shoes on ?

As stated above , my feet have swelled enormously that I no longer can get my shoes on , especially for work

I wear trainers for work ( I have plantar fasciitis in both feet ) & I've had to loosen the laces dramatically but I still have to squeeze my feet in which causes some considerable pain

I'm normally a size 4 shoe & my trainers are a 4.5 as there slim fit but I'm thinking of buying a 5 or 5.5 pair when I get paid

I know swelling is normal but is it this drastic ?

I think it's quite common for your feet to grow during pregnancy and become swollen. I can only wear flip flops now as nothing else fits round my foot comfortably, even with the laces loosened to the max.

TotorosNeighbour · 26/08/2020 00:26

Not sure if this is helpful but my feet grew a size during pregnancy and never went back to before

TenThousandSpoons0 · 26/08/2020 00:26

Yep can be normal. If it’s come on suddenly, goes above your knees, or if your face/hands are swollen too, get things checked out with your midwife.

My feet not only swelled up in pregnancy but they also went up half a foot size post pregnancy too. During pregnancy I couldn’t put my shoes on either ( the swelling started around 28 weeks ) and I was healthy with no complications. I also couldn’t put my socks on . I had to buy new shoes and new socks 😩! It was Winter so I couldn’t get away with sandals .

Yes I'm afraid. I had no option but to wear crocs as nothing else would fit. I would wear them at work to client meetings even. Honestly I shudder when I think back but nothing else would fit.

It’s probably nothing of the sort but are you being monitored for pre-eclampsia? www.nhs.uk/conditions/pre-eclampsia/

kirstenn123 · 26/08/2020 10:52

@Bionicname I don't believe so , I only have the swelling symptoms nothing else
I'm also only 15 weeks

Yes unfortunately mine have swollen up so I can’t wear my normal shoes. I wear trainers a lot so I’ve bought a new pair a size bigger which I can tolerate. I do wear flip flops but thought as the weather changes that won’t be practical.
Initially I had my swelling checked out in case it was the start of pre eclampsia but all was ok with my blood pressure and urine so my midwife just said to monitor it and look out for the other symptoms. Severe Headaches that last a long time and won’t go away with one lot of paracetamol , seeing coloured spots and swelling in other places. Face, upper legs, arms etc.
I tried to elevate my feet at night and only wear socks when I have too! Bare feet is most comfortable at home, if really painful I soak my feet too.

It’s pretty normal in the third trimester but 15 weeks is early.

London91 · 26/08/2020 12:04

I'm 39 weeks and from around 20 weeks I've been unable to put shoes on unless the laced are loosened as much as possible, so I've only worn trainers if it's been raining. Otherwise I've worn flip flops. Midwife has kept an eye on them. I don't think the recent heat has helped either.

kirstenn123 · 26/08/2020 13:23

@Zhampagne this is what worries me slightly , this started roughly when I was 11 weeks

At my 12 week scan they said it was fine as it was only a little swelling & they said it could be because of my job but now it's gotten much worse

I’d mention it to your midwife or GP, @kirstenn123. They might suggest that you try compression stockings.

EllieGolightly · 26/08/2020 15:18

I had to loosen my laces quite early on, it coincided with hot weather in April too. Have had to completely give up on wearing anything except one pair of trainers or my birkenstocks. I've had carpal tunnel and not been able to wear my wedding rings since around start of second trimester too.

My sister panicked me because she didn't really swell until later on, but I'm the kind of person prone to retaining fluid, like I'd always get swollen feet on a flight and takes a day or two to come down. BP and urine have always been fine so just one of those delightful symptoms!

It seems counterintuitive but make sure you're drinking enough fluids, and raise your feet up when you get a chance.

Worth mentioning to your midwife definitely to put your mind at ease.
