Hi everyone,

FTM pregnant here and trying to make sure my husband and I feel prepared for when our little boy arrives. Has anyone done a baby first aid course And do you recommend it? Obviously the hope is to never have to use it but maybe it made you feel more confident? Or was it a complete waste of time?

@NewAndConfused I done a baby first aid course just after I had my first daughter, thankfully I didn't need it but I 100% recommend it, it gave me some confidence that if something was to go wrong I would know how to respond.

Definitely worth doing and potentially life saving. If I had to choose between nct classes or first aid classes I’d choose the latter every time. I think some level of first aid should be taught to every new parent and whilst the hope is that you will never need to use the more life or death elements, I think they are wonderful at giving you confidence at dealing with the inevitable bumps, bruises, accidents and minor illnesses you will encounter.

Definitely, I used it to stop my baby choking when he was about 7 months and i was def calm because of that course

Definitely worth it!
Much better to do it and temporarily resent paying out for something you never needed to use, than to not do it and regret every day for the rest of your life, not doing something which could have saved your child's life.x

I have done a professional paediatric first aid course as part of my profession. It was amazing. Very very informative. Would really recommend all mums to do it.

I did one and had to resuscitate DS3 so I was glad.

A few years later I trained as an NNEB Dip. ( Nursery Nurse) and we did a lot of accidents and first aid. Since then I have done both Paediatric and full first aid as Professional Development. It has come in handy quite a few times.

I think it would be a really sensible thing to do. It would be great if you both did it. It would certainly make you feel more confident and you can ward off those that give you old fashioned and incorrect advice.

I did it when DS was about 8 months old. I expected anyone taking care of my children to be first aiders, and realised that that should include me!!

I don,t think it is ever a waste of time to do first aid. Hopefully you will never need it.

Imo it's worth it just for ease of mind when you start weaning. Knowing what is choking, and what is gagging (and they will gag) will keep you calm during meal times. Never had to use it touches wood and hope u never have to, but it's invaluable information to know.

Also, get the Red Cross or St. John's first aid app. Or both. Who's judging? They're free and have all the information you would learn at the class. The face to face courses are still worth it though.

We did the NCT infant first aid course on Zoom last weekend and it was great! I know quite a lot of first aid through work, but my husband learnt loads and feels much more confident 😊

firstimemamma · 26/08/2020 06:49

Definitely do it! I did a couple. Smile

Can't understand how anyone could think that learning first aid could be a 'waste of time'.

OhRosalind · 26/08/2020 06:54

Do it! I found it really helpful and confidence boosting, much better doing and practising stuff in person and being able to ask questions than using a book or app (though these are useful for checking things) and when I have had to use those skills, I’ve stayed relatively calm and I think that is down to the course.

Dinosauraddict · 26/08/2020 09:16

I did it, it gave me confidence before I started weaning. I was first aid trainer anyway but it was a useful refresher and it's different when you're thinking about your own child.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 26/08/2020 09:18

Yes, definitely worth it. I'd already had paediatric first aid prior to having dc1 because of my job but I still found it really useful.

Sallyspoons · 26/08/2020 09:19

My son was born early and a few days after he came home from nicu he went blue and floppy and I had to perform cpr. I was taught these skills in Nicu. It saved his life

Spam88 · 26/08/2020 09:39

Of course it's worth doing. We did the two hour St John's one which was free, but I think other ones are only about £30 aren't they?

Oct18mummy · 26/08/2020 09:57

Absolutely worth it did one whilst pregnant and again when he was about 6 months. We had a burn incident and a fitting episode thank god we did the course as managed to cope, keep calm and seek the right help with both

BrimFullOfAsher · 26/08/2020 09:59

Hell yes. I would recommend basic life support training as a minimum to everyone, parents or not.
