Dehydration?

I've been pretty unwell with morning sickness. Currently 8 weeks. Haven't kept any food down today and not really much fluid either. When do I start getting concerned about my levels of dehydration.

I understand that nausea/vomiting dehydration can be a vivacious cycle.

I feel tired, sick. Lightheaded when I stand and heart palpitations a few times a day. But worryingly, haven't been for a wee for over 12 hours.

Waiting for blood results on anaemia which could explain some things.

Thinking I should call gp again in the morning... when would I think about needing medical attention for dehydration??

I was like this with my first pregnancy from very early on like you right round till I had him at 37 weeks. All the midwife kept saying was it'll get better as pregnancy goes on and that I had no infection. I showed up as low iron and she said that won't help the situation but to take my iron tablets I was prescribed and I should feel better soon. So I did as was told and symptoms stayed and before I knew it I was practically having a seizure and was in hospital on a drip and constantly being monitored, blood pressure etc. They let me go home 2 hours later!!!! And told me to drink more. Considering I'd been drinking and eating anything extra my body had been chucking out. Even drinking water was making me sick. The midwife continued to say I'm fine and everything is normal!! I never found out what was wrong with me during that pregnancy! Must of been something if I was fitting and i knew I was eating and drinking more ( as you got to when feeling ill and with morning sickness ) I'm sure they don't do enough tests when pregnant. Because you know your own body and how I felt deffo wasn't normal! My advise to you would be speak to gp and ask them how it's possible to stay hydrated when your body is just rejecting it. They'll probably try ' brushing it under the carpet ' and say it's normal but demand answers! Not all negative feelings during pregnancy is the normal sickness during pregnancy no matter how much they say it is. Sorry if I seemed so passionate but it's not worth risking just so they can have one less thing to worry about! If you don't feel right demand all round checks

Have managed a whole glass of water (slowly) this morning and not been sick! Touch wood! Hoping I can get in top of this... have gone wee once in the last 24 hours. Not a lot.

Feel stupid bothering my gp 'I'm not drinking enough water...' solution: drink more water. Simples.

Maybe try making weak squash? I couldn't face drinking plain water at points early on in my pregnancy. I never usually buy squash but I was willing to see if it would help me to drink more and it did. It might be worth trying.

Peppermint or ginger cordial in water might help - both are good at helping with nausea

hellolittlebaby · 24/08/2020 12:55

I couldn't face water. I threw it straight back up. In my first pregnancy, I mainlined goats milk of all things. It's all I could stomach. (I was drinking goats milk instead of cows milk at the time).

A prescription for omeprosole in my second pregnancy "cured me". Do you have any other heartburn/acid reflux symptoms? If so, it might be worth talking to the doctor and trying this.

In my first pregnancy, I was given ranitidine and it did sweet FA.

The other thing to try for now is a bottle and a straw or sports cap. Literally just keep it next to you and have little and often. Just to wet your mouth and have one small swallow when you can.

Ughhhh I remember this stage so well. Not fun. Hope you feel better soon.

I had norovirus with my second. I was sick for near on a week

My dr said if the baby stops moving. Your probably dehydrated

physicskate · 24/08/2020 15:42

8 weeks. Way too early to feel baby move :(.

Have managed three glasses of water (probably close to two pints). Feeling quite proud that I've managed to keep it all down (so far) today.

I was in hospital at 10 weeks on a drip due to dehydration. Vomiting up everything I ate even water and didn't eat for 3 days. They admitted me because my ketones were a little higher than they would have liked (4, when they should have been below 2).

If you are concerned about dehydration I have heard that you can track your ketones using these things called ketostix. I haven't used them myself but have heard they can be useful and health professionals take them seriously.

It does sound like you're starting to get on top of it but be careful as you can easily relapse - it's unpredictable!

Thanks @HopeWish - that's quite helpful!!

I would give your MW a call and see if they can test your urine for ketones. When mine got too high I was admitted for fluids. I ended up going in 3 times for fluids as i couldn't keep anything down and felt awful. I ended up passing out at work and ambulance took me in on one of the occasions.
It wasn't until i got on the right combination of anti- sickness meds that I started to feel better (around 18/19weeks).

My babies (twins) were born healthy and good weights. They took everything they needed from me and left me with nothing. I only gained 11lbs throughout as i lost 2 stone during sickness.
