Is there a covid19 baby boom?

Just curious really! I'm 16 weeks and I'm wondering if there's a baby boom because of covid19. Any midwifes or sonographers out there that have been more busy than usual? Or less?

OP posts:

I've heard the opposite is expected, a 'baby slump' so to speak, because people don't want to be going to hospitals and the uncertainty around jobs is putting people off financially...plus casual relationships have been harder during lockdown. That's just anecdotal though so not sure what the reality is.

bigchris · 23/08/2020 11:24

A divorce boom more likely Grin

PleasantVille · 23/08/2020 11:24

I'd guess the opposite as well, job uncertainty, health worries, not wanting to spend time in hospitals etc

Time will tell but I'd be a bit surprised if there was.

Parkandride · 07/09/2020 13:53

Bumping as I'm curious about this, surely midwives, sonographers etc would be starting to see changes either way in booking in, scans etc?

Mogtheforgetfulmum · 07/09/2020 13:54

I'd say the opposite. We've put our plans on hold due to all of the uncertainty and I know we're not the only ones in our friendship group.

MaverickDanger · 07/09/2020 14:02

I got pregnant a week before lockdown & all the midwives so far have said that things are quieter.

They would normally expect to have 130-160 women on their “books” at any given time and currently have about 90-100.

Foreverbaffled · 07/09/2020 14:09

I got pregnant the week before lockdown and my midwife has said that things are definitely quieter!

WendyJames19 · 07/09/2020 14:16

Midwife here. Our bookings have increased hugely! We are anticipating a very busy January onwards.

m4d0 · 07/09/2020 14:47

I have heard there are a lot of ppl pregnant. Friend works in labs on CVS tests mainly and has been busier than usual.

Snackasaurus · 07/09/2020 15:01

I asked a nurse this when I had my bloods done at 12 weeks (7 weeks ago) and she said they've had a huge rise in numbers!

Congratulations by the way! 🥳🥳

Parkandride · 07/09/2020 15:04

Interesting, anecdotal evidence both ways.

I'll ask my midwife when I have my booking in appointment. Certainly in my friend group there's a bit of a boom, but we're all recently married, early 30s, jobs have been ok, so I'm not sure how representative we are.

welshladywhois40 · 07/09/2020 15:14

When I saw a midwife for booking in early July they had seen a surge then. So people where conceiving in may once the worse was over. So as another poster said - a boom in jan which is when I am due

blackcat86 · 07/09/2020 15:18

A boom is predicted due to people being home but IME its more unplanned pregnancies. We are delaying TTC DC2 due to not wanting to go to hospitals unnecessary (i was in hospital a lot with DC1).

smileyplant · 07/09/2020 15:26

I definitely think so, 3 people in my friendship group have announce Jan/Feb 21 babies so prime lockdown!

Oneandabean · 07/09/2020 19:15

Definitely a big boom. I’m due in jan and keep seeing loads of people also due jan. hospital has been full every time I’ve had an appointment too.

Catchingbabies · 07/09/2020 21:30

I’m a midwife, we’ve noticed a rise in numbers. The few 3 - 4 months of covid were very quiet and hardly anyone was booking in with new pregnancies but the last couple of weeks seem to be making up for that. September is always busy anyway with all those Christmas babies arriving so it’s a bit manic at the moment.

Allgirlmum · 07/09/2020 22:06

Baby boom now I would say

BabyLlamaZen · 07/09/2020 22:08

At first no because no hook ups, no fertility treatment, people worried about starting a family (so basically no planned and no unplanned either!)

But things are just starting to get back to normal again now.

supersonicginandtonic · 07/09/2020 22:14

I'm due in April and one of 4 in my office 🙈

FenellaMaxwell · 07/09/2020 22:17

We’ve seen a slight rise but not the massive one we were half expecting - I think whilst there are a lot more ‘boredom babies’ on the way, many people who were planning a baby have decided to wait so we aren’t seeing the big rise that you might expect.

RunnerRunner · 07/09/2020 22:27

I know a midwife, they think it’ll be similar to normal, if not slightly less. There won’t be as many accidental pregnancies from people in none serious relationships or one night stands as no one could go out. All fertility treatment also stopped for months so again reducing the number of pregnancies. Many couples may have also put things off due to jobs or worries about the virus. So the only people getting pregnant are people who were going to try anyway or people who are living together and have had more sex than usual and an accident. So in short no. I am currently pregnant and we would have tried at the same time with or without the virus. Our jobs are safe and we are getting to the point of now or never for our third child, we’d already decided to try in March months before.

Titsywoo · 07/09/2020 22:47

I would assume the opposite! I'm not planning on more kids but personally my sex drive disappeared for much of lockdown due to the stress and worry of it all - I'm sure I can't be the only one!

StaceImpactWfan · 08/09/2020 09:16

Im not sure but I know alot of people due in January including myself so maybe a rise for jan/Feb babies.

Bearcub01 · 08/09/2020 13:19

Definitely a boom here! I found out I was pregnant in the middle of July and since then my whole social media is constantly full of pregnancy announcements due jan/feb/March
